More info here.

(I heard that Thomas Pynchon specifically requested Miller for his book, which is just really, really strange to me, but it works)

I'm relieved (for him and me both) that he didn't go with his increasingly embarrassing post-Sin City blocky big-footed chunky exaggerated ugly, and settled for a much simpler graphic-designy cover.

Lisa Simpson: You're going to buy a second volume of Gravity's Rainbow?
Me: Actually, this would be my third copy.

I like the Chester Brown one.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

These are very nice. I wish the blogger had credited the artist responsible for each cover for the benefit of the less indie-minded amongst us - I can only recognise Chester Brown and Chris Ware. Who does the Auster and the Kerouac?

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Cold Comfort Farm=Lynda Barry
The New York Trilogy=Art Spiegelman (you can actually read his sig on the large version of the pic)

I'm reasonably certain Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales=Joe Sacco
and
The Jungle=Charles Burns - yes it is. The blogger said so. DAR!

I have great copy of Conrad's "Chance" with an Edward Gorey cover, I'll try and find it on the Inter-W.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

Bizarrely, Miller's is the only one that looks like an ordinary Penguin cover. Every time I browse the shelves in Borders I see a dozen covers just like that, whereas with all the other covers there are signs of individuality that leap out at you (particularly in the ones that are actual comics.)

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

The Kerouac looks like Jason.

That Sade cover has to be James Jean.

And I'm guessing Dorothy Parker is by Seth?

Wait, my bad - not James Jean; Tomer Hanuka.

The Hans Christian Anderson one is by Anders Nilsen

one year passes...

frank miller, now apparently 143 years old, speaks to the grauniad

https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/d4e3969118a5a190de7860dc91389e73e3468a0b/0_30_4500_2700/master/4500.jpg?w=620&q=55&auto=format&usm=12&fit=max&s=3a09166e3bee8982873c50c36650a3ca

“My stuff always represents what I’m going through,” Miller says today. “Whenever I look at any of my work I can feel what my mindset was and I remember who I was with at the time. When I look at Holy Terror, which I really don’t do all that often, I can really feel the anger ripple out of the pages. There are places where it is bloodthirsty beyond belief.”

Does he have any regrets? “I don’t want to go back and start erasing books I did,” he replies. “I don’t want to wipe out chapters of my own biography. But I’m not capable of that book again.”

It’s worth noting that whatever his detractors may think of his politics, Miller still happily inveighs against “white, heterosexual family values” and has no interest in defending his views on Occupy Wall Street. “I wasn’t thinking clearly,” he confesses. Does he support Donald Trump? “Real men stay bald,” he says with a grin, lifting his hat to run a hand over his bare scalp.

and neal adams speaks!

But Miller’s subsequent success, Adams says, is not his doing. “Whatever you do, don’t say that I’m responsible for Frank Miller,” he warns. “I’ve done the same thing for a hundred guys and nobody responded the way Frank did. Nobody advanced that quickly. And I made it hard for him! If you’d gone through it, you’d have gone home crying. I never would have thought that he’d turn out to be what he is. He’s become like a son to me. I didn’t teach him any other of life’s lessons, unfortunately, and I should have. That was the bad part.”

miller def seems like less of a maniac in this interview than he has for a long time, hope he's doing okay

Neal Adams seems cool.

I clearly have a lot of hard living to do over the next twenty years if I'm gonna catch up with that dude. Drugs are a helluva drug, man.

a REAL SCARIE robot!!!! (Old Lunch), Saturday, 28 April 2018 12:20 (seven years ago)

Most surprising thing about that interview is really Neal Adam's comments, believing that Miller was brought down by believing in his own fame, which lead him to drink excessively?

Nhex, Saturday, 28 April 2018 17:35 (seven years ago)

Ma, look at what Hollywood did to my boy!

earlnash, Saturday, 28 April 2018 19:57 (seven years ago)

I’ve thought that there must be some sort of (really slowly) degenerative condition going on behind his appearance and feebleness. It doesn’t seem like just substance abuse. We were both at the same party 12 years ago and even then I was like holy shit he is about to die. He got out of a car with help and then had trouble stepping up onto the curb. Idk how you plant yourself at the verge of death for decades like that, Burroughs is the only other example I can think of.

Burroughs was *always* stooped and kind of hobbling about. Even as a young man - well into his habits - Burroughs appeared 20 years older. And he lived to a grand old age! Miller otoh just looks like death warmed over.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 28 April 2018 21:07 (seven years ago)

That wasn't a complete final thought: He looks like death warmed over but he didn't look anything like that as a younger man.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 28 April 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)

Miller's face in that photo is performing some kind of weird perspective illusion where he appears to be looking in two directions at once. Human cubism.

To be honest he looks way better than he did four/five years ago, his declining health was pretty evident back then.

Ma, look at what Hollywood did to my boy!

I didn’t read it that way... he seemed to be putting the blame squarely on Miller; and partly on himself, for not “teaching” Miller better (as if it were his responsibility somehow, as a “father figure”).

yeah I read it more as "know the difference between yourself, a person like any other person, and your work, which may well be powerful & have a profound effective on people" - Adams would know, he's a guy whose work had people deifying him early on, but in all fields there's people who really soak that up and get very lost in their own heads as a result.
