OKAY, She-Hulk?
Sattelite Era JLA (which I just acquired from, like, 120 to THE DEATH OF VIBE!) frequently opens as Archie Bunker/Bruce & Clark & Red Tornado & Alice
Identity Crisis was sorta The Ice Storm, ie, LOOK AT OUR FAMILY, WHAT SEEDS oF DYSFUNCTiON WE HAVE SOWN

I just encountered Hank Pym, Wifebeater for the 1st time last night. Very effective, I thought.

Anyway, the 70s DC stuff, that I consumed by the armload as a kid, seems to have been full of this stuff, from Green Arrow in the kitchen (seriously, does Green Arrow have a PERSONALITY beyond being a liberal chili eater?) to Mr. & Mrs. Superman in Superman Family Dollar Comics, and, OMG, the Atom's BACHELOR PARtY in JLA (will send photos to Warlock later).
Surely, Spidey's been heavy on the domestic melodrama. The newspaper strip certainly was. There were some weeks when I couldn't tell which was Spidey and which was Rex Morgan, M.D. (which might explain my longstanding--since rectified--avoidance of Marvel).

But Rex Morgan has the cure for the daily blues!

Admittedly, it fits more the "teen soap" mold, but the two have been known to intermesh...

Kirkman's initial Ultimate X-Men arc, outright titled "Date Night," was all about the will-she-won't-he kissyface. Seat of your pants excitement, oh yes.

perhaps the upcoming elongated showcase presents will fit the bill here (poor old sue dibs)

Green Arrow does not need a personality HE HAS A FINGER.

Kyle: "I don't know quite how I feel what with Hal turning out to be the best Green Lantern after all etc"

Ollie: "FUCK YOU CAPITALIST SCUM how can you talk of being Green Lantern when the JAPANESE WHALING FLEETS ARE ABROAD and also FUCK WALMART. Except I can't actually say that for fear of upsetting Walmart's new range of Whale Snax so EAT FINGER."

Meanwhile, Spidey The Newspaper Strip should be Mary Worth with spider-power. Spidey uses his awesome abilities to solve relationship crises over a number of weeks.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

So, does anyone else partake of the glory of SPIDER MAN LOVES MARY JANE? The current arc revolves around the secret origin of Mary Jane (meaning the time she went gothy and emo a year back) and it is as awesome as it sounds.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

what's the deal, is it set in their teenage years or something?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Sorta. It's a different continuity altogether, with familiar faces (ala ULTIMATE whatever). Everyone's in high school, MJ doesn't know that Pete (stuck in the friend zone) and Spidey (her crush) are one and the same, Harry has yet to swear vengeance against anybody (and maybe he never will), et cetera.

I got hooked with issue 5, the Spidey and MJ date ish. It was simply a perfectly told story, with magical moments and melodrama seeping in as the tale wore on...

So yeah - it's grand.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I like me some Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. The two previous mini-series were ok, but it's been really great in this incarnation. The previously mentioned issue #5 was the best thing ever.
