For me:
52 WEEK 11--Batwoman shows us her rack and butt at the same time! While wearing heels! sigh.
CATWOMAN #57--in this issue: babysitters!
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #0--I just hope they keep numbering it in reverse
SLOTH HC--read it already, very fun and very odd Gilbert Hernandez OGN
SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #20--seems to be back on track
UNCLE SAM AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS #1--read it already, MUCH MUCH better than the preview in Brave New World--reads a lot like good issues of The Authority, actually
CIVIL WAR #3--this issue: Willie Lumpkin unmasks!
CARL BARKS GREATEST DUCKTALES STORIES VOL. 2--no idea which stories are in this one, but Vol. 1 was one of the most fun comics I've read in months--deservedly famous stuff...
COMICS JOURNAL #277--the 30th anniversary issue!

James: EIGHTBALL?!?

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 17 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

BTW: the Jack Kirby thing is the Kirby estate making a deal with Marvel over some "concepts" that Kirby knew better than to do anything with--and this was in the CAPTAIN VICTORY era, so you know it's scraping the bottom of the bottom of the barrel. Sounds atrocious.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 17 July 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Matthew, I don't think the WHO who died in Runaways actually dies, or at least, WHO isn't dead yet, because the preview in on the last page sez, "ONE OF THESE IS GONNA DIES."

FINALLY RESPONDING BECAUSE I'VE BEEN FUCKING BUSY DOING VARIOUS THINGS, MOST OF WHICH ARE UNFUN:

Matthew: Nico's such an obvious choice (what with her recent excursions into boyfriend stealing, et al.) that I doubt she's a goner. Plus, she's my favorite so I'm probably in a state of denial.

I want a boy to die, because I've always been anti-boy.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

ODDS LAYIN'.

Nico: Hot Asian Goth, strangely the least popular among Runaways fans. 1:20

Chase: Jock. No one likes jocks. 1:2

Gert: Fat nerd girl. You'd think that an appearance by her future time-traveling self would KILL her chances of being the one who dies. 3:2

Victorb: Robutt. Too green to be killed off. 50:1

Molly: The cute little kid -- WHO HAPPENS TO BE A DIRTY MUTIE. 1:198

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure about Gert, 'cause then BKV wouldn't get to have his sarcastic-voice-by-proxy anymore. And Nico would be make two dead minority characters, so maybe not her either.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Chase: Jock. No one likes jocks. 1:2

But he's a jock who likes the fat nerd girl, which makes him likeable. He's also the non-super-powered underdog.

What about alien girl? She did just get back, but she seems expendable.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, my Spidey Sense says her, but I didn't really want to spoil anyone in case they were behind.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

RUNAWAYS SPOILER!

Okay, so it makes some sense in the story, but this seems like a total shark-jumping move. And you know, it definitely does seem slightly irresponsible - way to go Brian, you killed off the world's only cool chubby female superhero! Have fun writing The Adventures Of Asian Suicide Girl and Sullen Blonde Jock!

On the other hand, it looks like the cast has now ballooned a bit, which is sorta promising. I'm so glad that Karolina is back; I always really liked her. Not so into her Skrull lover though.

"Boo" sez Baez to death of fictional character. "But she'll always be reborn when we open up our RUNAWAYS funny-books, longing to relive such joyous aesthetic pleasures," say lonelyhearts and legal clerks. "Boo," reiterates Baez, who's beginning to feel like a jackass because he's referring to himself in the third person.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

No more Brubaker X-Men for me; retconned Summers brothers and Shi'ar saturation leave a bad taste in my mouth. It feels like selfish writing on his favorite plot points. On the other hand, I think Carey's Rogue-led strike force concept is the second coming.

Madolan (Madolan), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

i bought a bunch of x-men on a whim---

i think i liked the brubacker one better, although i have no idea who vulcan is; i haven't read uncanny since 1992.

bachalo's art in x-men made it difficult for me to discern what was happening. and is cable going to be on that team? i hate that guy. rogue is the team leader? over cable? cannonball is a lot different from how i remember him in new mutants. how many x-teams are there now?

astonishing
x-men
uncanny

is new x-men a totally different team as well?

sheep sheet (serious sheet), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Vulcan is from Brubaker's X-Men miniseries Deadly Genesis which just recently ended, and is basically the beginning of his run. But don't bother, it wasn't as good as the Uncanny stuff and it will all be reiterated in Uncanny anyway.

Cannonball has been written many different ways over the years, many of the characterizations being totally at odds with one another. Carey does a good job of it, writing him as the capable, level-headed, experienced guy who was the leader of the New Mutants and X-Force and has spent a significant chunk of time as a full-time X-Man.

Cable is kind of a better character now - more of a messianic character, less of a psycho. I imagine that Rogue drafts him into her group, and that's that. I'm really curious to see how things work out with Cable, cos I'm skeptical about his presence too. On the other hand, Carey kinda killing it in that first issue, so maybe I should just trust him.

New X-Men is not really the X-Men, it's really the new version of New Mutants. It is awful, which is does not have to be. It's sad, cos I can think of a dozen ways to make a killer New Mutants comic, and New X-Men goes in the opposite direction.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for the info!

sheep sheet (serious sheet), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, to answer another question, not counting "New X-Men," there are three proper teams of X-Men -

Astonishing: Cyclops, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Beast, Kitty Pryde, Colossus

X-Men: Rogue, Mystique, Cannonball, Iceman, Cable, Sabretooth

Uncanny: Charles Xavier, Nightcrawler, Havok, Polaris, Marvel Girl (Rachel Grey), Warpath, Darwin

There's also X-Factor, which is a detective agency. That group includes: Jamie Madrox, Wolfsbane, Strong Guy, M, Layla Miller, Rictor, Siryn

There's also a new, somewhat pointless version of Excalibur: Captain Britain, Dazzler, Juggernaut, Nocturne, Pete Wisdom, Sage. This book largely exists to give something for Claremont to do, though he's currently on a leave of absence for health reasons.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Can someone explain to me why Superman and WW are discussing Batman's death (i.e., in the completely craptastic JLA #0?)

Also, if anyone has the patience, I'd love to understand the last issue of B4Bludhaven, if anyone can be bothered. Monarch? Captain Atom nukes a whole city and then dies? Er?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

Um, I liked JLA #0. So suck it?

And I assumed they were flashing forward to things that have yet to happen! Like Pa Kent dying (unless he is dead), and Bats dying, and EARTH 2 IN THE FUTURE.

As for Gert eating it - I don't know that it's a shark-jumping moment for the series. It didn't seemed earned, tho (unlike Alex's death in the first "season"). That said, I'm glad BKV has enough faith in his chops (or hates himself enough) to write himself into these interesting little cul-de-sacs, and enough respectful disdain for his fannies to remove favorite characters from the mix and see where that leads.

Toad is at the institute, if I recall. But the thing is, they are using the Decimation thing intelligently in that the Xavier Institute is now basically a reservation for mutants, and a lot of villainous characters are camping out there for sanctuary. That's part of why Sabretooth went there in Carey's first issue.

But you know, the X-Men (and Marvel) has a long history of villains joining superhero teams, and I think it's cool.
