Diamond's list for August 23rd, 2006. This is a much more eventful week than we've had in a while, or at least it is for me.

I'm getting Astonishing X-Men, Daredevil, Ultimates Annual, Morrison Batman, Wonder Woman, and 52. There's this part of me that's like "hey, why not check out Justice League," but that part of me is a total moron and should not be listened to, ever.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Sunday, 20 August 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Also (courtesy of Midtown Comics' list):

- NEW ACTION PHILOSOPHES!
- the last issue of Supermarket!
- $60 New Avengers Coipel variant!
- BATMANG & RASPUTING!

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Sunday, 20 August 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

BATMAN #656
JACK OF FABLES #2
ASTONISHING X-MEN #16
DAREDEVIL #88
NEW AVENGERS #23
ULTIMATES ANNUAL #2

Plus I'll probably grab Wonder Woman and Supermarket.

Oblivious Lad. (Oblivious Lad), Monday, 21 August 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

NOTHING, JUST LIKE EVERY WEEK FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS

(I did buy the new Art D'Ecco collection last week but it's a cunt to try and read at 1/3 the size of the original printing)

Kit (kit brash), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

everything depends on whether or not I get all my packing and last-minute dental work done in time to get my comics before my 5 a.m. flight on Thursday. If I don't get it done, I'll get nothing, and be forced to figure something out once I hit the left coast:

52 WEEK #16
BATMAN #656
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #1 (OF 6)
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA COVER A #1
DAREDEVIL #88

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Also, yesterday, at a store in the mall (B1uen0te$), I bought "distressed" t-shirts starring Aquaman and Green Lantern!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

For me:

52 WEEK 16 special wedding special!
BATMAN #656 whatever Morrison brings I'll read
DAREDEVIL #88 special Foggy special!
NEW AVENGERS #23
ULTIMATES ANNUAL #2 where in the hell is it going to fit in continuity?

I have actually read an advance copy of JLA, and (w/o spoiling anything or offering opinions) can tell you that a) it has a few 52 teasers, and b) it very much has the look-and-feel of Identity Crisis.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

BARF?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

52, Batman, Astonishing, Daredevil, Eternals, and New Avengers. And maybe that first Scott Pilgrim book. Finally read the FCBD issue and it had some enjoyment to it.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man. Also apparently out this week, and on my must-get-this list:
FELL #6
WALT AND SKEEZIX VOL. 2 HC

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Fell came out last week, I think! I got it on Thursday, w/ my GIANT-SIZED MAN-STASH.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

THERE WAS A NU FELL AN I MIST IT???

the eunuchs, Cassim and Mustafa, who guarded Abdur Ali's harem (orion), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

And maybe that first Scott Pilgrim book. Finally read the FCBD issue and it had some enjoyment to it.

You are in for a treat, manthing.

LIST:

BATMAN - Apparently it's set in a museum for Pop Art.
ASTONISHING X-MEN
SPIDER-MAN LOVEES MARY JANE - CROSS-REFERENCE WITH THE "WHICH HEROES SMOKE WEED" THREAD.
DAREDEVIL - where we learn of Foggy's crippling addiction to "Quantum Leap" fanfic.
WONDER WOMAN - Prediction: so good, I'll momentarily forget that the story arc is due for completion in 2010.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

re: Astonishing X-Men - "yeahbuwha?," indeed. I sure hope Whedon has a decent exit strategy for this one, cos I'll be really annoyed if he wrecks the character for no good reason.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Batmorrison, Daredevil, CASTLE WAITING #1 I'm so happy, but most importantly:
NEW WALT AND SKEEZIX REJOICE HOSANNA it's in my lil' hands now.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Batmorrison was pretty great, but spelling "mic" as "mike" is a huge pet peeve of mine. WTF Grant.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 August 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

he's losing it

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 August 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

sexmajik

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 24 August 2006 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

In fairness, it is spelt mike.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 24 August 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

no comics this week! Unless I can find a shop, now that I've been on the west coast for THREE WHOLE MINUTES.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 24 August 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

Mic & Mike's Festival of Grammar Equivalency.

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

FINE.

Have fun singing into your michael.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Daredevil: very entertaining spotlight on what Foggy's been up to for the last few months--this is my favorite thing Brubaker's doing right now by a long shot

Batmorrison: lots of fun, daffy and pop-art-y--did everyone see that interview with Morrison in Newsarama yesterday?

Ultimates Annual: ultra-dull Captain America/Falcon story--should've known to skip it since Millar didn't work on it

52: at least I had fun kicking it around this week: http://52-pickup.blogspot.com/2006/08/week-16-oliveyoogh.html

Fell: OH NO A SICKO PERV! OH NO! Ellis on autopilot.

New Avengers: I love that Bendis has turned Hydra into ultra-far-left ideologues--having a legion of bad guys I can sort of sympathize with makes the conflict more exciting--but if you're gonna show us a deeply conflicted character who can't decide what side she's on, it shouldn't be painfully clear what side she's on, you know?

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 24 August 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

did everyone see that interview with Morrison in Newsarama yesterday?

Yes indeed. I especially enjoyed this line: "I'd be so much more impressed if Frank Miller gave up all this graphic novel nonsense, joined the Army and, with a howl of undying hate, rushed headlong onto the front lines with the young soldiers who are actually risking life and limb 'vs' Al Qaeda."

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Batman as "embodying the best that secular humanism has to offer" -- cute.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Batman as "embodying the best that secular humanism has to offer" -- cute.

So is Animal Man dead then? Oh well. Seeing as no one's written a decent comic featuring him for 15 years, it's not really a biggie.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

OH CRAP, I FORGOT ALL ABOUT 52. I wonder if there's a comic shop nearby?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 25 August 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

RUN!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 25 August 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

OH CRAP, I FORGOT ALL ABOUT 52.

THIS HAS GOTTA BE A SIGN!!

I couldn't find Fell at my usual shop this week, but I did go later than usual. I'll track down a copy.

I thought Daredevil, Batman and Wonder Woman were all enjoyable--maybe not in that order. Batman/Mad Monk wasn't that great; I thought a lot of the dialogue was off.

Serious drama in Spidey Luvs MJ this week bros.

the eunuchs, Cassim and Mustafa, who guarded Abdur Ali's harem (orion), Friday, 25 August 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

o shit - no spoilers plz!

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 25 August 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

You know, the weird thing is that as poorly plotted as it was, I found this issue of 52 to be more readable than it usually is. That is especially weird since it focused on the two plot threads that bore me the most!

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Friday, 25 August 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Batmoz and Wonder Heinberg were both very fun. Daredevil continues to rule. I bought New Avengers on a whim, and it was very good -- I'm looking forward to Bendis and Maleev's Spider-Woman series, and I'm starting to really like Coipel, whose work is starting to look like a more sexy and polished version of Jason Pearson. Haven't read Legion yet, and geez if I had the sense to check the credits of the Ultimates annual I never would have bought it. I got JLoA #1 essentially for free, but I haven't read that yet either.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Friday, 25 August 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I agree. I think the change in the layout style from Giffen's usual white-bordered, six-panel boilerplate helped a lot. The art hasn't exactly ruined this series for me, but it's very very poor.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 25 August 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

SPECULATION RE: ASTONISHING X-MEN

Blindfold = SWORD mole?

ALSO: BATMAN was an immense amount of fun, but can Batman's cape really cover every painting in the exhibition? C'MON KUBERT

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

SPECULATION RE: ASTONISHING X-MEN

It seems like the "Hellfire Club" are projections created by Emma, including "Perfection," and that she's being used by Cassandra to free her from her prision under the school.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Friday, 25 August 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

The "Emma projects Hellfire" hypothesis, I suspect, is a given, but I do like the notion that Emma's really Cass' backup plane.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Friday, 25 August 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

Also her backup "plan".

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Friday, 25 August 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

i liked JLA 1

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 27 August 2006 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

JLoA #1 was not totally cringe-inducing! Way to go, Meltzer!

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Sunday, 27 August 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

The art was AWFUL, though.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 27 August 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, no quarrel with you there. How long are Meltzer and Benes attached to the series? Just 12 issues, right? I wonder if they'll get anyone better to follow them up.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Sunday, 27 August 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

JLA 1 must be the worst first issue of a comic I've ever read. I think Meltzer had me at "ovarian cancer."

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 28 August 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'll admit that my standards for Meltzer are really really really low. I mean, I kinda gave him points for not including any rape, though he did have some really icky sexual lines peppered throughout.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 28 August 2006 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, it's not an issue I have with sexuality in superhero comics - Grant Morrison and Joss Whedon can do it without seeming like really gross fanboys - but it's in the execution.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 28 August 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

JLA 1 must be the worst first issue of a comic I've ever read.

you didn't pick up FLASH #1, I take it.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Monday, 28 August 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

Corrected.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 28 August 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Even keeping in mind that most comics are geared towards trades these days, I don't understand why more people can't just make first issues that are somewhat self-contained and introduce you to the lead characters and basic premise of the series, and give you a reason to come back for more. Doing the job of the first issue over the course of six or seven issues is lame, and it presumes a lot of the reader, especially those picking up the first issue on a whim.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

That's what #0 is for!

I can't think of many recent Big Two books that have used #1 to set the stage (excepting Shulkie, The Super-Terrific Atom Guy & Blue Beetle). TPBing is killing monthly pamphlet consumption.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

(x-post)

Yeah, it seems like such a no-brainer. What's the point of a first issue, otherwise? Just comparing it to the first issue of Moz's JLA makes me sad.

And actually, 'cause Meltzer clearly aspires to something that's deeper than mere hackery, I think that kinda makes it worse than The Flash.

Ovarian cancer!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I think Legion Of Super Heroes had a pretty great #1, even if all of the characters weren't in it. (But then, with a cast as large as Legion, it was a good call.)

They don't totally count, but the first issue of "Up Up and Away" in Superman was a fantastic #1 issue.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

LoSH, definitely!

Marvel needs to play catchup!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Astonishing X-Men #1 was a good first issue -- it introduced all the characters and the basic gist of the series, set up some subplots, had some conflicts within the cast, and threw the X-Men into action at the end.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

The "All-New" Atom, too.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone know how trades of, say, New Avengers sell in comparison to the monthly issues?

I can understand waiting for the trade with a miniseries, or picking one up instead of back issues. But who are the people who waited to buy Astonishing X-Men Volume 2: Dangerous instead of Astonishing X-Men #6 through 12? They must be very patient people.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Nextwave and X-Factor both had effective and relatively self-contained number ones, if I remember correctly.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'ma kick someone if they keep proving me wrong.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

What really bugs me about Meltzer is his absolute refusal to have superheroes call each other by their supernames. Like, FUCK DUDE, Black Lightning might have been down with Batman back in the day, but NO WAY IS HE ON A FIRST NAME BASIS.
Also, FUCK OFF WITH YOUR ARSENAL, PLS AND THANKS.
And also, y'know who the most boring character EVER in the JLA is? RED TORNADO! The only thing cool about him was that he was a robot. But now he's not even a robot. Great.
Also, making superheroes talk like people who read comics is really stupid.
I will, of course, be buying no.2.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm reading Y The Last Man and Brubaker's Captain America in trades, and honestly, it's really annoying to me to read a book in fits and starts, I'm definitely more fond of the monthly schedule.

Huk-L continues to be really really OTM about Meltzer's JLoA.

I read New Avengers on and off - I pick up a lot of the single-issue stories, but skip out on the longer arcs. I quite like having a comic that I can just buy once in a while and not feel like I should be commited to buy them all.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

NEW AVENGERS is the only book I read in trades, and I've yet to spend a cent on those - I just read the hardcovers I happen upon every few weeks when I'm in a Borders.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Monday, 28 August 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

New Avengers does seem like Bendis's "You fuckers cancelled Alias and Pulse, but I am an industry giant, so I'll write about people called Jessica all I goddamn want, and you'll like it!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 28 August 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)
