Pull me back in

I used to be a rabid comic book fan and collector but have fallen from the fold for the last few years. I'd really like to get back into them but am kinda intimdated by all the stuff out there... and I've almost totally lost touch with the medium.

The last thing I read and got really obsessive about was probably HARD BOILED, but I haven't seen anything since that has blown me away on the same level. I love that incredibly detailed yet elegant style of drawing that Darrow has.

I have always been a fan of Moebius and and a lot of the older 70's-80's HeavyMetal/Hurlante stuff like Morbus Gravis and Enki Bilail. I was also into undergeround stuff like Eightball and Blackhole before I stopped buying.

Would anybody care to recomend some new stuff for me to check out so I can test the waters again.

Well, for a start, I think Metal Hurlant is still being published (or, at the very least, someone's reprinting issues for US consumption).

DC Comics recently made licensing deals w/ Humanoids Publishing, a European-based GN publisher pumping out the sorta sci-fi flecked stuff that would seem to be up your alley. You can still buy the stuff from Humanoids directly (from their website) for the time being, I think - the DC editions are supposed to be smaller than the originals. (Heh - I just googled the Humanoids URL, & it turns out they're the ones publishing Metal Hurlant!)

You might want to also check out Artbomb - it's a graphic novel retail / review site run & administrated by a bunch of creators (most notably Warren Ellis) catering to the (for lack of a better word) "indie" crowd. Lots of goodness to be had there.

And since I should possibly recomment an actual BOOK (or creator) - I've been reading a bunch of Eddie Campbell's "Alec" stories (pseudo-biographical musings on being a comic artist & the history of comics & drinking in pubs w/ Alan Moore drawn in a sketchy off-the-cuff detailed style), & it's made me a bit nostalgic for his _Bacchus_ series (which I can't do justice, as I haven't read it in a long while). There's probably more useful information on the Artbomb site.

Oh! And FINDER!

w0rd on Carla Speed McNeil's Finder. Her art looks overly simplistic at first, but she's absolutely grown on me.

Also check out these threads for multitude recommendations:
Okay, so what are the good superhero comics these days?
Okay, so what are the good non-superhero comics these days?
