Fantasy Film Casting -- Watchmen

I suppose it's an indulgent fanboy or fangirl exercise -- but so be it. You're in charge of casting a Watchmen movie. Discuss.

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Rorschach: Willem DaFoe
Laurie: Madeleine Stowe

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Good call with DeFoe.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Nite-Owl: Philip Seymour Hoffman!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Owlman: whoever played Arthur in the Tick.
Dr Manhattan: Samuel L Jackson.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Comedian: Johnny Depp
Ozymandias: Owen Wilson

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Manhattan: Jude Law or Sam Rockwell
Ozymandias: Colin Farrell (or Johnny Depp x-post!)
Comedian: Brendan Gleeson

(note: haven't read Watchmen in nearly 5-6 years)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If Stallone could act, he'd be a great Comedian.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's true. I'm trying to think of good Comedians. Tom Berenger keeps coming to mind, but it might be just because he was all scarred up in Platoon.

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Here're some suggestions (w/ said suggestions in costume!):

http://www.xanadb.com/archive/comics/20030127.html

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Comedian - Viggo Mortensen

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Priceless.

http://www.xanadb.com/images/watchmenposter.jpg

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of who would be a good Silk Spectre, partly because the way she's drawn remind me of Lucille Ball. (It's the hair...)

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozymandias: Robert Redford

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Comedian = Ron Perlman, sherly.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808406489&intl=us
has John Cusack rumoured for Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl, which could be good.

Worst fear: that they'd try to set the movie in dystopic "present day" rather than dystopic 80s.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozymandias: Owen Wilson
Nite-Owl: Philip Seymour Hoffman!

This is inspired casting. Owen Wilson would be great at delivering smarmy, pretentious speeches in the most charming manner.

As long as Schwarzenegger /= Dr. Manhattan, I'll be straight (or maybe he's the only one who could portray that level of disconnect with human emotion!).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

but could he do it intentionally?

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you SEE _Kindergarten Cop_?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was trying to think of a muscular actor who could do be Dr. Manhattan. The best I could come up with is Michael Clarke Duncan.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Manhattan ain't thick and muscular! He's wiry!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Like Kevin Garnett!

vleeetrmx21 (Leee), Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Rorshach : David Caruso (he must be ginger!)

Ozymandias: Daniel Day-Lewis

The Comedian : Sean Connery (if only he was about 20 years younger....)

Nite Owl : Jim Carrey

Silk Spectre : Ashley Judd

Dr Manhattan : errrrrrrrrr....

David N (David N.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Manhattan: Kyle McLachlan
Silk Spectre II: Sigourney Weaver

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 11 June 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, this would be problematic, given that we see most of the characters in their twenties/teens as well, so the actors shouldn't be too old.

Nite Owl= you shouldn't pick any actor just because he's chubby, so no Philip Seymour Hoffman. John Cusack would be fine.

The Comedian = Michael Madsen

Dr. Manhattan (he is muscular, check the comic) = Vin Diesel

Silk Spectre II = Jennifer Jason Leigh (or is she too old?)

Ozymandias = Rupert Everett

Rorschach = Kiefer Sutherland

Silk Spectre I = Kathleen Turner, with some make-up

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 11 June 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Comedian = Michael Madsen
This is pretty good!

Re: Dr. Manhattan: One thing you have to correct for is that in comics pretty much everyone is abnormally muscular. It's just that not everyone is naked. I take Dr. Manhattan's muscularity in the series as being the comic-book equivalent of "average guy in good shape." I don't think he's intended as a muscleman.

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Friday, 11 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The retired Nite Owl (Hollis Mason) - Christopher Reeve

It would involve some reworking of the character, but I thought this would be kind of cool and poignant. Either that or exploitative.

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Friday, 11 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

One ought to consider Dr. Manhattan's nakedness. Ergo, Harvey Keitel shall play him.

Christopher Reeve has already been "exploited"/honored/whatever in an episode of Smallville.

vleeetrmx21 (Leee), Friday, 11 June 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit!

Josh Anomaly (josh_anomaly), Friday, 11 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not thought through all the characters but I'd like.

Rorschach-William H Macy
The Comedian-George Clooney
and
Ozymandias-Tom Cruise. Though the Luke Wilson choice made above was a good one.

The other characters I have a little more difficulty with.

fractal (fractal), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, The Comedian obviously looks like a weightlifter, but Rorschach and Ozymandias are clearly skinnier than the good Doctor (even though both of them are in very good shape). I guess it has to do with Dr. M rebuilding his body; that's the way he wanted to look, he wasn't that muscular as a human.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 12 June 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, m had body issues

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 12 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Dr M needs someone with a body that can't be faulted, not necessarily a big muscly one - it should just look perfect.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Who has a perfect body, though?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 12 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not trying to say it has to be without flaws (makeup and cgi can cover most of them anyway), but I think the style should be that rather than necessarily especially muscular.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

So (from what I understand, I haven't seen it yet) everyone from "Troy" to Dr Manhattan casting call, then?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 12 June 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for Bloomps, yeah.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 13 June 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking that if he could act, Eddie Guerreo from the WWE could get the look for The Comedian down pat.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 13 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What are saying, Dan, doesn't pro-wrestling = acting? Suburban Commando aside.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Sunday, 13 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan OTM about Eddie Guerrero

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 13 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm saying that pro-wrestling is a particular type of acting which may or may not translate to a movie like "Watchmen".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Eddie is a gigantic ball of corn.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
We all know comic book movies don't usually happen, but Darren Aronofsky (Pi, and at one point Batman) has signed to direct Watchmen.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Gena Rowlands as original Silk Spectre.

Huck, Friday, 23 July 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Comedian - Sam Elliot...Nick Nolte maybe...

Dr Manhattan -
pre-transform: no idea
post-transform: pure CGI (i think he needs to permanently look 'unreal' in his transformed state, as if he was always slightly phasing across multiple spaces/times)

Adrian Veidt - Val Kilmer ? Pierce Brosnan ? Christian Bale maybe ? (But i think Veidt has to be a blonde-haired blue-eyed golden boy... Owen Wilson does have that quality, and good spot on the 'charm' aspect, but I don't think he looks old enough - nor does he have the looks) Ha, maybe if Brad Pitt was older...

Rorschach - Brad Dourif...Doug Hutchison...David Patrick Kelly

Nite Owl - Beau Bridges (or maybe Jeff ?)

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Owen Wilson might be able to do Ozzy, depends on how a tight a reign the director has over him. Someone suggested Ed Norton for Rorschach and that's actually not a bad fit. CGI for Doc Manhattan is spot on. Comedian needs to be someone like Nolte or Stacy Keach, but how they're going to shoot his younger incarnations is gonna be the trick. Aint enough vaseline in the world to make either of them look 16 again...

Nite Owl would have to be Beau. Jeff's too pretty.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite suggestions have been Cary Elwes for Ozymandias, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Night Owl, and William H. Macy for Rorshach.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Holly Hunter might make a good Silk Spectre.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Dr. Manhattan must be Harvey Keitel.

c(,,c) (Leee), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Arnold Vosloo would be a good Dr. M if he could, you know, act.

chap (chap), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

WTF

Dr. Superman, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

sneaky!

David R., Friday, 9 March 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

All I could see 1:52 into that trailer was boobs.

Dr. Superman, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

You should write for AICN!

David R., Friday, 9 March 2007 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

The Comedian - Viggo Mortensen

My wife would pay $100 for a ticket to that movie.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Gerard Butler = Comedian

HI DERE, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...

Not bad...

chap, Friday, 22 June 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

That's the first time an article about Jackie Earl Haley hasn't mentioned Kelly Leak or the Bad News Bears EVER.

Too bad Matthau ain't around to play Moloch.

Garrett Martin, Friday, 22 June 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

More rumors from my pal Leonard.

Oilyrags, Friday, 22 June 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, this is the link to the article - that other one was just comments

http://www.nervepop.com/nerveblog/screengrabblog.aspx?id=107e12332#12332

Oilyrags, Friday, 22 June 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

uh, whuh? Tom Jane?

They should do whatever it takes to get George Clooney in Syriana mode to play the Comedian. Or do it like Olivier in that Sky Captain movie and digitally fit classic late '70's Burt in there.

Garrett Martin, Friday, 22 June 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

I've a feeling George wouldn't sully himself w/ another comic movie, after the Batnipple debacle (tho he would be perfect, even if he didn't actually gain the weight).

Also: Jason Patric should play the Comedian! SEE NARC!

David R., Friday, 22 June 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

SEE NARC ANYWAY!

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

YES!

David R., Tuesday, 26 June 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

from IMDB trivia for NARC: The work "fuck" and its variations are said 298 times.

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Billy Crudup = DR. MANHATTAN!!!!!

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

(supposedly)

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

poor man's Mark Ruffallo is an odd choice, but he's probably a lot cheaper than Jude Law, but more expensive than Ioan Gruffud.

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

Jude's still The Choice (by someone) for Ozymandias, tho! BC is taking the place of either Jason Patric (NARC) or Keanu Reeves (DUDE).

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Mark Ruffallo = poor man's Jason Patric

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

:o

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

Rumors also have the dynamic duo of Nite Owl & Silk Spectre being played by Patrick Wilson & Kate Winslet, which is fine by me (but PW better have a paunch, damn it) (he can have mine; I don't need it).

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever seen this Wilson guy, but he looks pretty skinny in the photos on imdb.

I have the perfect Nite-Owl physique, including doofy specs and I'm willing to grow out some unruly bangs, especially if it gets me a makeout scene with Kate.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Supposedly:

Silk Spectre:

Anybody who was in Prophet of Evil: The Evil LeBron Story is fine by me.
