The opposite of the disappointment thread: what comics that you were expecting good things from, or that people hyped to you for a while before you got to read them, have met or exceeded your expectations?

promethea
selina's big score or whatever it was called
captain carrot and the zoo crew
safe area gorazde

GM's JLA, Flex Mentallo (which I only just read!)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Since my mid-teens, I've been the only more-than-casual comic reader I've known well, so until the internet came along I wasn't really aware of hype surrounding comics - I generally just asked the guy in the shop what was good, or followed writers I liked, or bought stuff on a whim. Since being online I haven't actually discovered anything I've completely fallen in love with. The closest is probably Y: The Last Man, the buzz around which was 'yeah, it's a good solid read', and lo and behold so it is.

Watchmen, the second time I picked it up.
Almost every big Grant Morrison ending.
Showcase Superman.
She Hulk

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

DC New Frontier. Probably never would've read this if I hadn't come across ILC, and it's every bit as good as you folks led me to believe.

Also: Showcase Superman.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

word to flex mentallo, safe area gorzade, ASS, showcase

Adrienne Begley (sparklecock), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yes to New Frontier!

Also Why I Hate Saturn/The Cowboy Wally Show (whichever one I read first)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

gotham central lived up to the ilc hype and bone lived up to the irl hype.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Another Yes to New Frontier.

And We3. Getting back into reading trades, not really knowing Grant Morrison, and not being impressed by his take on the X-Men or JLA's Earth 2 (also Morrison / Quitely). We3 could have been so much worse than it was, but I can't see it being any better.

Preacher, Sandman, 30 Days of Night, Runaways - also late to the game on these, but have found them worth the anticipation.

Hoping Seaguy lives up to the hype, when I eventually get to it.

lumberingwoodsman (Chris Hill), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Amazingly, and I can't believe I'm saying this, Civil War. But my expectations were very low to start with. And I may change my mind if they can't pull all the threads together.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Flex Mentallo surpassed it's legendary status when I got my grubby paws on it last year. As did every translated opus from the recently discovered Joann Sfar.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

gotham central
new frontier

showcase superman

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

I must try Queen & Country. I bought one which said 'book one' on the side, but it turned out to be book one of some spin-off series. It wasn't bad, but I imagine it's not as good as the series proper.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

I had my eye on the two trades of Alan Moore's Supreme, but was turned off by the uglee art by Liefeld and his '90s peers. but GODDAMN was I glad I bought 'em once I did.

Then I got From Hell, which blew my tiny mind and which I think is AMo's greatest achievement.

i did the same thing! was it the cold war berlin story (which is awesome)?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 05:24 (nineteen years ago)

Queen and Country lived up to the hype. I've gone through the first four books and now i heart rucka. What's he doing these days?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 06:15 (nineteen years ago)

Rucka's still writing Q&C... very intermittently. He's also writing Checkmate (like Q&C but with supertypes and not nearly as good) and 1/4 of 52 (notably the Montoya/Question plot, which is probably my favorite part). And some novels, including two Q&C novels.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

Dark Knight Returns

That's the one. It was pretty good, very atmospheric.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot all about Queen & Country. I have no idea what the last trade I have is but I wonder if any more have come out.

I didn't read Watchmen for a long time because it seemed like something I had to read, but it really is that good.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Q&C has two or three (I've lost track) "new" floppies out (scare quotes because they've been out for like a year or something (not really that long but it feels like it's been)) for the Operation: Red Panda Lol, which in the Q&C world actually exists between the two novels. Wherein Chase goes to Iraq (!), and in Rucka's words, "things go very bad, very quickly" (!!!).

The last trade released was Operation: Saddlebags Wtf.

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

Huh, I think I have Saddlebags but no memory whatsoever of Red Panda.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

That's because Red Panda is underway currently -- it exists b/w the novels in the Q&C world, but here on Earth-Prime the order in which they were released goes Gent's Game--Private War--Red Panties.

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

Aha. So basically I read Saddlebags like nine years ago and I'm still caught up.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)
