Judge Dredd's Pop Music Shenanigans

This week's JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE features a story by me exploring pop music in Mega-City One. I get to do some gags, assuming they haven't cut it to buggery, so well worth the read. (Also not too late to get last month's JDM also featuring me.)

This may be an excuse to talk about previous occurrences of pop music in 2000AD or in comics in general, and the eternal behind-the-times-ness of same.

There was that Garth Ennis Muzak Killer thing, a particularly lame example of his tedious habit for railing against his bugbears in his writing.

Anyone read that Spice-capades comic? Amongst other chuckles there's a good Peter Bagge story about him accompanying his daughter or niece and her friends to a Spice girls concert.

Wasn't the first Nemesis story some weird musical tie-in?

Yeah, it was supposed to be the first in a number of conceptual stoies, each inspired by a song, under the title 'Comic Rock'. The song it was based on was 'Going Underground' by The Jam.

Oh yeah, art by Dean Ormston.

The Muzak Killer? I thought it was Dermot Power.

No, my thing! Muzak Killer was indeed Dermot Power. Admittedly Garth Ennis did take a few subtle swipes at music snobs as well, although he might have been being serious.

Judge Dredd's Pop Music Shenanigans begin and end with the MEGA PLAN as far as I'm concerned.

Has there ever been a good comic about pop? (There has been a quite good comic about indie, or at least the 80s iteration of same, St Swithins Day. And of course L&R is a good comic about punk, I guess.)

MY GENERATION (Vertigo Pop! London by Milligan & Bond)

Zenith?

Duh! Zenith!

Have to look at the Milligan one.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

I thought of My Generation, but it's more Britpop (as is Phonogram in fairnesS) and specifically the Oasisy end of it.

But it is dead good!

Sort of tangential...

Some of those Rock'n' Roll biography comics were terrible! Although who could forget the awesome Alice Cooper story in issue 50 of Marvel Premiere! I think Howard had a few music references in it as well...

Actually thinking about it, there's a ton of comics with music tie-ins... How about music with comic references? Was Sabbath's 'Iron Man' anything to do with Marvel's character?

Didn't Judge Death kill them in a disco in his first appearence?

I also recall the story about an uglified band with Jagger-o-like as the lead singer.

Who Killed Pug Ugly? featuring Otto Sump.
