Comics in your Gmail

Mentioned on the CBR thread:

You know, we could always trade files back and forth, too, especially those of us with Gmail and/or high speed connections (somewhere I have a CD with the best of the stuff I got from the newsgroups).

Some people expressed interest. I haven't found the CDs but am downloading things as we speak -- they're not .cbr, though, they're jpegs. Is there an easy, reasonably fast program I can use to make .cbr files?

Who's in?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm in!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Gmail gets cross if you send over 10mb files, which a lot of .cbrs and .cbzs seem to be.

That aside I am so in.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm, I wonder if there's an easy way around that. Do they compress if you ZIP them, or are they like mp3s, already about as small as they get?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Aren't .cbrs just a bunch of .jpgs? I'd imagine they'd be most zippable.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think jpegs compress easily. (Asks office design geezer - he confirms)

I actually don't mind putting a zip file or two up on my website, since the ILC massive is pretty small - I could email interested people with the link. But that's not a solution to the problem of all of us sharing stuff.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm in too.

It may be worth investigating the route the Stealzor people went through on ILM though - Andrew hosts it on the server as a newsgroup.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

All you have to do to make a CBR is put all your jpgs in a zip file, and change the extension from .ZIP to .CBR. It's that easy.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Conversely, then, anyone who doesn't want it as a .CBR file can change it to .ZIP -- excellent. I have a file that's probably too large to send, but I'm going to try sending it to David and aldo (Tom, I don't have a gmail address for you). If it doesn't work, no big deal -- I guess I could divide the issue in half in two separate files ...

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, it shows up in my sent-mail (twice), but my "You are currently using X%" line hasn't changed. I don't think it was sent, but let me know if shows up.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, a 9mb file doesn't seem to work either. Blast.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm the dot ewings at gmail

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:38 (nineteen years ago) link

The first file you sent out (Defenders #73) is downloading now. Just checked and it works fine.

I'm going to try one (Grant M does Dan Dare).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:00 (nineteen years ago) link

It did go! Okay, weird. I'm sending Flash #200 in four parts right now, but maybe that strict a division (

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I might sorta circumvent the gmail file-size conundrum and just send you folks links to .cbr files on my site for y'all to D/L at your leisure.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd be down for David R.'s method. My home computer is a little tiny turd.

Huk-L, Friday, 1 October 2004 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Huck, I've got a Green Lantern Earth-1/Earth-2 crossover thing (#52 from the old series) I can put up for download if you don't want it in email (I can't do this for everyone cause my web space and bandwidth are paid for by someone else).

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh shit! You can email me that if that would be easier!
I can always go over to my brother's for something like that!

I'll email you my gmail.

Huk-L, Friday, 1 October 2004 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, cool, I figured you'd want to see that.

Got it, aldo!

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Cool, because my inbox said it had failed. Although it turned up in Sent when I checked just now, and you have it. Very confusing.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

See, that seems to be what happened to me. If it's consistent about that, though, I guess we don't really have a problem.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

And if you wanted to send that Flash #200 that would be great too!
I don't even have internet at home until sometime next week after yesterday's suprising painless move, so I'll probably spend Sunday at my brother's writing my reviews of the final issues of Green Lantern and DC: The NEw Frontier.

Huk-L, Friday, 1 October 2004 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I have about 250 megs of comics downloaded, it looks like. I am totally going to inflict GI Joe vs the Transformers on y'all when I get a chance.

Huck, Flash should be headed your way now, and I'm in the process of sending the GL to everyone.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Heh, I was hoping this was like the good version of "Hey! There's a spider on your shoulder!" and that I have comics in my Gmail AS WE SPEAK.

Anyway, I'm totally in, providing the size limit stuff gets worked out of course.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

This evening, I will hook! y'all! up! with some Timely-era Sub-Mariner action!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I am up for this. but don't have a lot to bring to the table. The only cbrs I have around are the adaptations of the Timothy Zahn Star Wars novels, and Earth X - Universe X - Paradise X, neither of which are exactly premium items.

Surely there must be a naming convention for files in a CBR: if I just zip up random jpegs and rename them, how will it know what order to show them in?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, good question. (Mine are all "such-and-such ##," which is how they came when I downloaded em.)

Forwarding stuff to you now, J&A.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Sweet. Do I need a certain program to view cbrs properly?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Gmail is being slow and stally on me right now as I forward things, so if you get two copies of something with the same subject header, just delete one.

You can either rename .cbr files .zip and unzip them, or there's a program called CDisplay here: http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Apparently (according to the help page), Gmail doesn't support nicknames for multiple recipients/distribution groups? I wouldn't have thought that would be a hard thing to include. Damn.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks dude! I got the comics, I'll wait until I go home to check 'em out.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm gonna wait to send anything else for a bit -- I don't want to flood anyone's mailbox (yeah, I know they're huge, but they've been around long enough you could've filled em up some), and I've only got this Usenet account for October, so if I sent it all as I got it, I wouldn't have anything left to send.

(Andrew, I'm not worrying about quality really, so no reason you should -- I figure the ideal things for this are "stuff that might be worth reading but either isn't worth buying or isn't worth hunting down or is too hard to find," like the watersports Submariner in that last case.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm in as well.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 2 October 2004 00:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone else timed out trying to d/l these files from your acct?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 2 October 2004 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I got aldo's just fine, not sure if everyone was able to download the ones I sent; sometimes I get timeouts when uploading, but so far they've worked on the second try. Which one(s) timed out?

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 2 October 2004 19:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, everything worked now. Zah!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 2 October 2004 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Probably at least 50% of the comics I have are over 10mb.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 3 October 2004 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure that's necessarily a problem - the first one Leeee sent was bigger, as was the one I sent round. I suspect gmail have altered their limits but haven't publicised it so people like us don't exploit it and break their server.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 4 October 2004 05:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh shit I can't believe I forgot about it! If gmail doesn't work for you for whatever reason, use Dropload. It's very simple and easy.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:14 (nineteen years ago) link

sadly i would not be able to contribute but am up for receiving any if people wanna share out of the goodness of their hearts

H (Heruy), Friday, 8 October 2004 09:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Anyone care for Fables #'s 19-24?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, please.

At some point over the weekend I should have (finished downloading) a Gig of Uncle Scrooge, if anyone's interested.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Heh this cbr thing is actually going to put comics fans' "eclectic tastes" on the line viz

"Yes Carl Barks is a master, his Disney work really proves that childrens comics can be art too"

"I'm glad you think so would you like a Gig of them?"

"..."

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

i've heard abt Fables but have yet to read it so I'd be happy

H (Heruy), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm definitely interested in Uncle Scrooge! The Fables I've got in paper form.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

If people want to send me things to invisiblecrutch @ gmail.com, that would be a fun way to while away the afternoon.

You must get less done at work than I do, Nick.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I hate my job.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I need someone to write 500 words on GL #181 in my fanboy style, STAT! thanks

Huk-L, Friday, 8 October 2004 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

(You'll notice I'm sending a lot of stuff out this afternoon; I'm finally moving to a new computer this week, and shifting a bunch of stuff to my Gmail sent-mail seems to be sensible. If anyone wants a video file of "Psycho Girl" or the Varitek/A-Rod brawl while I'm at it, hey, holler.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 10 October 2004 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Some trackers let you see who's seeding and who's leeching, and their ISP and whatnot; it will also tell you what port they're using, or if they're "NAT". If it knows what port you're using, you're golden; if not, then your port isn't really open.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 2 July 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

mullygrubber [aaaaat] gmail dott com - thanks in advance on Gaz's behalf!

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 3 July 2005 01:09 (nineteen years ago) link

How do you find if it knows what port you're using?
I can see "Peers List", but that doesn't say anything about ports, and under the "Connections" column it reads "local" for each peer.

Huk-LL, Sunday, 3 July 2005 01:15 (nineteen years ago) link

So, what I may have been doing wrong was that I set the ports thing AFTER I had started d/ling. I recently shut my computer down for a bit, and when I resumed my BT d/l thing, my Batman is coming a WHOLE LOT faster. Damn. I could be reading that crap by now.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Never mind my YSI request for Flex -- apparently I already slsk'ed or DC'ed it and haven't read it yet. D'oh.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 3 July 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh. Yeah. That helps, Huk.

There are no comics in my gmail.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 3 July 2005 23:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I've got some 1970s JLA pdf's I could gmail you.

HukL, Monday, 4 July 2005 00:58 (nineteen years ago) link

what is your Gmail, Casuistry?
I've got some Spirit (pdf) stuff you might like?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 05:29 (nineteen years ago) link

And, um, if anybody wants any Batman stuff (in CBR) let me know.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 05:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, the Spirit stuff is in CBR.

HukL, Monday, 4 July 2005 12:52 (nineteen years ago) link

themin0rth!rds at gmail without the googleproofing. Is there a CBR reader for the Mac? I would like to read some of the Spirit, I have only read Eisner's artsy graphic novel work.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 4 July 2005 14:35 (nineteen years ago) link

The Spirit (which I only started reading about two weeks before Eisner's death) is probably the greatest comic ever.
The CBRs I got are only about 7 pages each, but you should check your local library for the Spirit Archives. The library you helped save with your marching has 15 volumes, and they're nothing short of astonishing. Especially considering their contemporaries.

a google search for "CBR Reader" and "Mac" turned this up: http://www.sketchyorigins.com/comics/archive/index.php/t-3357

I'll send them once I get home.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 14:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I was about to say that my local library does not have a thrilling comics section, but I just checked their online catalog and apparently there's some whole other section for "GN", graphic novels. And they do have several volumes of the Spirit, currently being held for assorted Portlanders. I could go way out to the burbs, but that would be ridiculous.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 4 July 2005 16:30 (nineteen years ago) link

If you're reading The Spirit, you're going to want to start with volume 12 or later--the period after Eisner got back to it after WWII. First few volumes are good but Eisner's aesthetic is just kind of forming; the volumes during WWII while he was away are eminently skippable.

Chris, look carefully at multcolib.org--you can request any book you like from the Portland library system, and they will deliver it to your local branch and email you when it's gotten there. Free.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Pshaw!
Even the first few show more than hints of the breadth of Eisner's vision, and then once he really takes flight circa Vol. 12/13 you can see the roots and stuff.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Happily my local branch is more or less the Central one. Unhappily I perpetually owe fines to them which I'm too lazy to pay off so they don't like to put things on hold for me; I haven't tried getting them to transfer books from library to library, though. Happily they let me take out books as long as I owe less than, like, $20. Also happily now they e-mail me whenever I forget to renew books from them. Also even happierly I have succeeded in keeping some books out for over a year. That copy of "How To Cook Everything" seems to be mine, as long as I click on a button every three weeks an no one puts a hold on it...

Well kind of sort of. I did rough layouts, with cartoon/stick figures à la Harvey Pekar, from a short story I wrote last year. I will gm@il them to whomever asks. But maybe it's embarrassing, a little!
