'Just' All Star Superman for me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 4 January 2007 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

geez, I'm kinda embarrassed how much stuff will be waiting for me: 52, Atom, All Star Superman, Superman, Superman Confidential (WHY IS ALL THESE SUPERMEN?!??!), Civil War, Amazing Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Uncanny X-Men...

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 4 January 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

52 was pretty hot this week. I'm glad they had Jiminez do the "it's raining (super)men" pages -- the regular 52 artists wouldn't have pulled that off nearly as well. He's definitely the go-to guy for large scale destruction and chaos at DC, you know?

M Perpetua (mperpetua), Thursday, 4 January 2007 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

ASS is one of those anti-geezasthetic books where it's really really good but there isn't anything to say about it except "It's really really good".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree, I think there are loads of things to say about ASS, but mainly as a comparison to other mainstream comics. But what i would like to do is a compare and contrast the modus operandi of ASS with, say, the Marvel Adventures comics - similarly continuity light, done in ones. The former is a flagshiop book, the latter is "you know, for kids".

Pete (Pete), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Grant's story was nice and all, but the art in this issue of All Star Superman was just amazing, some of Frank's best work ever in my opinion. This series is like the one thing Grant Morrison has ever done where he's not the lead singer, more like the rhythm section pushing Frank along. I wonder what Quitely will do when this series is over, aside from maybe transcending his body and becoming a being of glorious light.

M Perpetua (mperpetua), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Jeeze, I love ASSuperman as much as the next guy but I still don't believe in people transubstantiating into "glorious light!"

I also picked up last weeks comics.. so it was, for me, the three core X-Men titles, the Atom (still loving it!), Detective Comics (great artwork, good writing but uh where'd the end go?? sloppy sloppy or am i just asking too much?), and regular Superman, which I haven't read yet. I also haven't read the x-titles aside from Astonishing, which was alright, but I still feel like it's all very thin. I don't know. I should re-read the whole arc at once (I know I say this each time a new issue comes out.)

sorry, been feeling parenthetical tonight.

and i'm still plowing through, and loving, Chippendale's "NINJA!" have any of you dudes picked this up yet? paging dean gulberry.

I've got NINJA sitting on my shelf crying out "read me read me" but probably won't get to it for a few weeks yet.

I really loved this ASSuperman--maybe the only current series about which I can genuinely say I want more comics JUST LIKE IT. I think if there were a wave of superhero comics trying to imitate it, that would actually be really healthy.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 6 January 2007 07:27 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what Quitely will do when this series is over, aside from maybe transcending his body and becoming a being of glorious light.

YES. AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL I HAVE TO SAY.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

douglas, if it helps your initiative, you can read any page of ninja at a time and not have to worry too much about continuity. it's probably best if, going in, you know you won't be getting anything like a straightforward narrative.

I can't say enough about ASSuperman, too. I think I finally get the All Star vibe. It's not about shipping on time, it's not a (direct) response to Ultimate. It's BOUTIQUE comics. Like, you can forgive a bit of sloppy art/housekeeping writing in comics that ship monthly and serve the larger universe, but the All Star line, every issue, every page, should be an EVENT (though not an "event"). ASSuperman is definitely meeting its mandate. I think ASBatman probably is too, though not in the same way.
I also had two weeks of comics to pick up this week. (LOTSA SUPES!)

Superman - weakest of the Busiek issues yet. Last issue was so much fun, wha' hoppen? This was downer, downer, downer.
Superman Confidential - I'm really enjoying this. I might even go pick up Superman For All Seasons just because I'm feeling so good about Tim Sale's Superman. Is Cooke pitching in with some art assists too? He's gotta be doing thumbnails or something, right?
Detective Comics - You liked the art? Where was Robin? If Williams doesn't come back soon, I might give up on this book.
Guy Gardner - Didn't put it on my list - Sold out??? WTF??? Or maybe my comic shop just didn't order any extra copies of a $5 mag starring Gnort.
Winter Soldier - Didn't put this on my list either, but it was in my file. Pretty decent.
52s - OMG The shittiness of the art!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

you guys are making me want to read All-Star Superman.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

hardcover coming soon!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, get the hardcover of the first six issues, Jessie. That should be pretty sweet. I think I'm going to hold out and pony up for the eventual Absolute edition.

M Perpetua (mperpetua), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

What's with the retcon hardass nu-Gnort?

ASS Spoilery Question:

Am I to understand that the story going on here is related to the "return of the original Superman" future story that Morrison wrote during his JLA run? And, like Huk implies, that ASS is somehow "in continuity" with the larger DCU?

J (Jay), Sunday, 7 January 2007 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

(god, that's got to be the geekiest thing I've ever written!)

J (Jay), Sunday, 7 January 2007 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

OR, it's in its own continuity, which coincidentally also has a DC 1,000,000 event. What with the Krypto appearance, and all.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, Ninja! Been trying to get the local library to order it (well, they got in Paperrad's BJ & Da Dogs & some Gary Panter, so fingers crossed) - nowhere local's stocking it.

ASS = grebt, & looking forward to the next issue - All Star Bizarro!

(hay Ian/Douglas - reading articles on Xpressway/Corpus Hermeticum graphic design + Bruce Russell interview in 2nd issue of The National Grid RIGHT NOW)
