songs that should be turned into comics

I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide
With the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around..I'll always be around..and around and around and around and around

I'll fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..

I am I am I am Superman and I know what's happening
I am I am I am Superman and I can do anything

You don't really love that guy you make it with now do you
I know you don't love that guy cause I can see right through you

If you go a million miles away I'll track you down girl
Trust me when I say I know the pathway to your heart

I'd pay serious money for a book of comics adaptations of Roches songs, esp. if it included "Hammond Song."

If you go down to Hammond
You'll never come back
In my opinion you're
On the wrong track
We'll always love you but
That's not the point

If you go with that fella
Forget about us
As far as i'm concerned
That would be just
Throwing yourself away
Not even trying
Come on you're lying to me

Well i went down to Hammond
I did as i pleased
I ain't the only one
Who's got this disease

Why don't you face the fact
You old upstart
We fall apart

You'd be okay if you'd
Just stay in school
Don't be a fool

Do your eyes have an answer
To this song of mine
They say we meet again
On down the line
Where is on down the line?
How far away?
Tell me I'm okay

If you go down to Hammond
You'll never come back

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Monday, 22 January 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

I was actually listening to 'The Highwayman' not too long ago and thinking about how it could be turned into some sort of space series.

One, two, three, four, five
Everybody in the car, so come on
Let's ride to the liqueur-store around the corner
The boys say they want some gin and juice
But I really don't wanna
Beerbust like I had last week
I must stay deep
Because talk is cheap
I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know
They are getting sweeter
So what can I do I really beg and you my Lord
To me flirting it's just like sport, anything fly
It's all good let me dump it
Please set in the trumpet

Chorus:
A little bit of Monica in my life
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man

And jump and down go and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left
And one step right
One to the front and one to the side
Clap your hands once
And clap your hands twice
And if it looks like this
Then you are doing it right

I do all
To fall in love with a girl like you
You can't run and you can't hide
You and my gonna touch and sky

ROB SPEAKING IN A ALIEN LANGUAGE
IT'S COLD IN SUNFIRE GLORY
FROM THIS POINT I RISE TO INFINITY...
(MANY INHUMAN SOUNDS)
(I AM STILL ATTEMPTING TO TRANSLATE CORRECTLY)

THE MESSAGE REVEALED FROM OUTER SPACE

THERE IS A LAND WHOSE BEAUTY IS ALMOST UNIMAGINABLE TO THE HUMAN MIND
[IN A DAZE?] WE STAND THERE AND LOOK FURTHER THAN THE ORDINARY EYE CAN SEE
CHILDREN, FAR ABOVE THE ROOF OF THIS WORLD
WE CAN ENCOMPASS VISTAS OF THE WORLDS
THERE IS A LAND WHERE THE SUN SHINES ETERNALLY
ETERNALLY, ETERNALLY
OUT THERE IN OUTER SPACE IS A LIVING, BLAZING FIRE SO VITAL AND ALIVE
THAT IT THERE IS NO NEED TO DESCRIBE ITS SPENDOR

I looked in the sky where an elephant's eye
Was looking at me from a bubblegum tree
And all that I knew was the hole in my shoe
Which was letting in water (letting in water)
(letting in water)

I walked through a field that just wasn't real
With one hundred tin soldiers which stood at my shoulder
And all that I knew was the hole in my shoe
Which was letting in water (letting in water)
(letting in water)

(Narration: I climbed on the back of a giant albatross
What flew through a crack in the cloud
To a place where happiness reigned all year round
And music played ever so loudly)

I started to fall and suddenly woke
And the dew on the grass had soaked through my coat
And all that I knew was the hole in my shoe
Which was letting in water (letting in water)
(letting in water)

MIKE SKINNER BREAKS NEW GROUND AT MARVEL WITH ORIGINAL COMIC SERIES BASED ON HIS EPIC

A GRAND DON'T COME FOR FREE

New Comic Series Exploring the Origin of the Notorious Geezer Character Marks First Time Mike Skinner Has Produced Original Content for the Comic Book Format

Marvel Comics to Launch First Issue in "April 2006"

NEW CROSS – BRIT Award-winning writer Mike Skinner, long acknowledged as the master of indie garage, and Marvel Comics join forces this spring to launch a ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from his magnum opus, A Grand Don't Come For Free. The first issue is scheduled to be delayed in April 2006.

The comic series will mark the first time Mike Skinner has produced original content for an ongoing comic book project. The series will expand the saga of Skinner’s epic hero, Mike, whose quest to find some money he's lost is detailed in eleven best-selling tracks played over the course of forty-five minutes. Skinner’s unparalleled storytelling power will inform new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Mike, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Geezer from a music scene that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the album, further supplementing and defining the saga’s mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

“As a lifelong fan of Marvel comic books, and as an adult reader who’s seen comics “come of age” and take their rightful place in the world of kebab shops and late-night garages, I’m excited to be a part of Mike’s new incarnation. Oi oi saveloy” said Mike Skinner.

The series will be illustrated by award winning artist Banksy.

Skinner continued, “I love Banksy’s work, and I think this is going to be a dynamite partnership. Frankly, I can’t wait. Innit”

“Mike Skinner is a true literary master. We are thrilled beyond words to have him join Marvel on this exciting project. The millions of Streets fans are in for a real treat, and I’m sure many more will soon be hooked on this epic series through this historic comic project. What's a 'grand' anyway?” said Joe Quesada, Marvel Entertainment’s Editor-In-Chief and Chief Creative Officer, Publishing.

“The level of excitement and talent that Mike Skinner brings to the world of comic books is electrifying. We’re proud and honored to be a part of what promises to be an industry-defining event that certainly won't end up in the quid bins at Fopp like the album did” said Dan Buckley, Publisher and Chief Operating Officer of Marvel Entertainment, Publishing. Reports that the scripter on this project will not be Skinner but will in fact be Jamie P were unconfirmed at press time.

I was actually listening to 'The Highwayman' not too long ago and thinking about how it could be turned into some sort of space series.

The bit that gets me is, ok, Willie gets to be a highwayman, Kris is a sailor and Cash gets to drive a fucking SPACESHIP, and Waylon gets to be a...dam builder? Dude got screwed!

Comic version: Jonah Hex (1st verse), Viking Prince (2nd verse), 4th verse can go to Adam Strange...I suppose Steel is DC's only construction worker/superhero?

How about Going Underground by The Jam?

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Someone actually turned one of my songs into a little comic book once! Although I guess it was more like a kid's book.

That hideously long, nigh-on unlistenable 'O'Malley's Bar' (?) on Nick Cave's 'Murder Ballads' could be one of those tacky Garth Ennis or Warren Ellis/Avatar cash-in projects.

Particle Man, Particle Man
Doing the things a particle can
What's he like, it's not important
Particle Man

Is he a dot, or is he a speck
When he's underwater, does he get wet
Or does the water get him instead
Nobody knows, Particle Man

Triangle Man, Triangle Man
Triangle man hates Particle Man
They have a fight, Triangle wins
Triangle Man

Universe Man, Universe Man
Size of the entire universe man
Usually kind to smaller men
Universe Man

He's got a watch with a minute hand
Millennium hand and an eon hand
And when they meet it's a happy land
Powerful man, Universe Man

Person Man, Person Man
Hit on the head with a frying pan
Lives his life in a garbage can
Person Man

Is he depressed or is he a mess
Does he feel totally worthless
Who came up with Person Man
Degraded man, Person Man

Triangle man, Triangle Man
Triangle man hates Person Man
They have a fight, Triangle wins
Triangle Man

Too obvious?

There was an awesome thread on that song on SomethingAwful (err, a friend reads it) sometime ago, where someone mentioned the Grant Morrison run on Particle Man - "some say it was lacking in characterization, but what's he like is not important"

"Promised Land" by Edan

At the thinks of the brain pain I came
With the sell-a-lot plot from the megawatt mainframe
With a suit made of electricity...
With a suit made of electricity
I ran through the Great Wall of China, convincingly
That was after the World Tour...
That was after the World Tour
When I travelled through gravel and battled matter at the Earth's core
I did the show on a fireball...
I did the show on a fireball, a pioneer
Ran into the jungle and jetted wearing a lion's ear
I fought fear where the Hammer of Thor lent me...
I fought fear where the Hammer of Thor lent me
And tangled with the Angel of Death for four centuries
Put a nameplate on a asteroid belt...
Put a nameplate on a asteroid belt
And I ran through the future with an android's help
That's when civilians were made of metal...
That's when civilians were made of metal
I received the Coronation cause I had the last flower petals
My power settled a clash between races..
My power settled a clash between races
and put good people on the magazine faces
Substituted television scandals with elephants and pandas
Tell 'em it's the elegant commando
With a hand so large..
With a hand so big, I punched a sphinx in the nose
In the nose, decomposed, and so the story goes
I smacked a 40 ounce out of a young man's hand..
I smacked a 40 ounce out of a young man's hand
And fed him lessons of life to formulate a plan
I wore the Prime Meridian as a wrist band...
I wore the Prime Meridian as a wrist band
And gave away my riches but I still remained a rich man
I thought of freedom and I jetted to the Promised Land...

(though I suspect that Jack Kirby may have already done it.)

ALSO: "Here Come The Warm Jets" by Brian Eno, but I can't discern any of the (frankly, irrelevant) lyrics.

And that should probably be "with the hammer Thor let me..."
