Fables

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Like a Big Fool I will be reading "The Return" on cbr I guess. And then complaining about it on ILC.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

52 Checkmate Criminal

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

52, Legion, Dr. Strange, X-Factor. Not bad, I guess. This entire month feels weird, as though someone is trying to make me buy fewer comics.

M Perpetua (mperpetua), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Criminal 2

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

52, Criminal, Dr. Strange, X-Factor.

If this is the beginning of the new Flash team, I might give it a shot.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

52 WEEK #38 - hopefully addressing the Mr Mind plot that seems to have been forgotten
DEADMAN #6 - this is really a bizarre book, but definitely readable. NOT DEADMAN though.
FABLES #57 - something happens. I've lost track.
HELLBLAZER #228 - WHY DOES FRANCES MAKE ME BUY THIS?
HELMET OF FATE IBIS THE INVINCIBLE #1 - although I missed Detective Chimp so I might hold out for the (inevitable) trade
MYSTERY IN SPACE #5 - RAMPING UP FOR THE NEXT EVENT, THRILLSEEKERS!
SHOWCASE PRESENTS BRAVE & BOLD BATMAN TEAMUPS VOL 1 - I am struggling with JLA Vol 2. This cannot be a good sign.
SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #26 - Better than you think.
WETWORKS #5 - I CAN'T JUSTIFY THIS. WHY AM I BUYING IT?
DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #4 - This is really good, had it come out all in one year it would have been contender for book of the year.
ETERNALS #6 - I have to see this to the end, even though I'm not hugely enjoying it.
MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX ANOTHER KIND OF LOVE TP - Because the other ones were good.
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #3 - Much better than you think.
SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE #14 - Counting down the McKeever issues.
X-FACTOR #15 - This plot will go somewhere, eventually.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

I would also give this new FLASH team a chance, but I have to cut back on my idiot comic spending.

Speaking of - WETWORKS is enjoyable in a junk food fashion (I mean, vampires & werewolves & big fuck off guns = yay, right?), tho the art (oh Whilce) is making it hard.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Showcase JLAs are pretty LAME. Don't sweat it.
Showcase Batman Buddies should be awesome ALL HAIL HANEY!!!

Do you realize the contradiction in yr Flash statement, Dave?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, small week, even for "reading".

The real list is up: http://www.diamondcomics.com/shipping/shipping_012407.txt

For me:
52 WEEK 38--things apparently get worse for Montoya and Charlie, go figure
SHOWCASE PRESENTS BRAVE & BOLD BATMAN TEAMUPS--sounds kind of insane
SUPERGIRL/LSH #26--did anyone notice that the extra pages disappeared with OYL? sigh
CRIMINAL #4--this is a totally amazing series so far; you're not reading it... why again?
DOCTOR STRANGE: THE OATH #4--BKV does a mighty good Night Nurse
COMPLETE NEMESIS THE WARLOCK VOL. 1 TPB--for my '80s 2KAD weirdness fix
JUDGE DREDD COMPLETE CASE FILES VOL. 6 TPB--see above

Why are they even bothering to reprint the early Warlock stuff in a Marvel Masterworks? The good stuff's all going to be in Vol. 2...

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry if my cold-addled self ain't getting what you're getting @, Huk, unless I shd realize that ALL comic spending = idiot spending. Or Flash is an idiot.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Fables, Criminal, Dr Strange and X-Factor. And Silent War, given how great Son of M was, and Hine's assurance that "we’re trying to keep it clean of the Civil War. This ties into Son of M and that’s all at the moment." Plus, Frazier Irving!

Oblivious Lad. (Oblivious Lad), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

YES RE: SILENT FRAZIER

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

nothing. but I already bought Kane vol 6 and Jack Staff vol 3 this week.

nu-mongrel (kit brash), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure that the new Flash team starts next month, but if I'm wrong, I'll get that too.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 January 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

should i start reading fables? i kind of like it, but i don't want to get sucked into another soap opera only to find out its a soap opera several months in, before it's too late to turn back. i have read parts of a few of the trades.. my teenage cousins like it.

be home by 11 (orion), Monday, 22 January 2007 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

ALL NEW AND ALL MARVEL, APPARENTLY:

SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE - I found myself hilarified by the "Spidey/Sandman battle thru Gwen's POV" that featured last ish and hope there's more hijinx to come.

DOCTOR STRANGE: THE OATH - yay!

PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL - WILL WE SEE MORE WEE IRON MEN? WILL FRANK REFERENCE "GET SMART"? WILL OLIVETTI INFLICT EVERY CHARACTER WITH HERNIAS THIS TIME AROUND?

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Monday, 22 January 2007 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

Rucka's still writing Checkmate right? Is it (now) more than the pale shadow of Q&C he described it as?

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 22 January 2007 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

NO WAIT, the idiot is me. I read as I will give new nu-Flash a chance yadda, because in about a year, Wally/Jay/Bart's gonna wake up next to Suzanne Pleshette wearing a Thanagarian anti-grav brassiere...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

CHECKMATE is now like Q&C-in-spandex, but GOOD. Or better - it's all about KOBRA & a Checkmate sleeper agent, & the shenanigans that abound. Rucka's probably biting Sleeper Cell now instead of Homicide, but it's New To Me, so it's all good. And keeping Cliff Richards the ffff away from the art = BONUS.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

I love Fables.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

Showcase JLAs are pretty LAME. Don't sweat it.

I've said this before but no one would listen! Admitidely I might be extra harsh on it cos I bought it in expensive "DC Archives" edition.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS BRAVE & BOLD BATMAN TEAMUPS VOL 1

M. V. (M.V.), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

Did Mike Allred really do this week's Fables?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Without actually checking, it's probably a back-up story - there've been 4-page back-ups in recent issues by a slew of folks.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, I was THIS CLOSE to buying Helmet of Ibis, due to the fun of last week's Helmet of Chimp. That was a close call.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

No, Mike Allred really did all of this week's Fables. Not great though.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 28 January 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

Is anyone loving Eternals?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really liking it (mostly for JRJR), but I can't say "love" enters the equation.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

I like JRJR more here than on JMSSpidey, because his style just fits Kirby stuff well. (Deep down I want all Spidey art to be Ditko, I guess.)

I keep wondering if it'll read better in trade -- I like it, but maybe I was hoping to be blown away.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

I was actually thinking about the qualitative diff. between JRJR on JMS' Spidey, & what he's done since. Not that I can really prove it, but his art right before leaving the book is pretty sketchy - Spidey looks like Nicole Richie @ times, and everything's just sorta flat. Compare that w/ his stuff on the dogshit Sentry mini, which was fantastic & inspired (in contrast to the script, which was, well, you know). & the same w/ Eternals, esp. those 2-page Celestial spreads.

Either he took it to another level after leaving Spidey, or the JMS / Ezekiel Mundane Tour of Who Gives a Fart was really grinding JRJR down to the nub.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Seconding the not-greatness of Allred on this issue of Fables. I quite liked his backup story several issues back, but his Bigby and especially Pinocchio look wrong, and everything looks like it has a filter over it, like they shaded it all with really light letraset.

But I was happy to see the new creatures introduced on the last page, as I didn't expect Willingham to incorporate that story into the Fables universe.
