Help me track down a comic!

Hi all, I'm trying to figure out what the name of a comic I read when I was very young was. It's about a giant robot in Japan and a small boy like Astr-Boy if I remember correctly. Wonderfully detailed and about A3 if iirc. Lots of tanks and things. I actually can't remember the story. Does anyone have any suggestions? Sorry I can't be more specific. I'd love to find this again! Thanks for the help.

That should really be astro-boy. Sorry!

Dammit, that didn't work! Anyway, it's most likely "Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot" by Frank Miller and Geoff Darrow, here's it's Wikipedia page:

...though you must be pretty young if you read that as a child, since it came out in 1996.

Tuomas, Thursday, 8 March 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas you are a star! 1996! Christ, I thought I read it when I was a kid. Ah well, I wasn't so old then either, still but a teen. It's not cheap but I needs it, I wants it.

Expensive morning! Have ordered the following:

300 - by Frank Miller
Big Guy and Rusty the boy Robot - by Frank Miller
Albion - by Alan Moore

Stop me before I amazon again! also C/D seeing all these free delivery deals and things cancelled because I'm only a short hop over the Irish Sea away? They get them in the North for jebus' sake!

kv_nol, Thursday, 8 March 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

I read the first ish of Albion and didn't feel compelled enough to buy the rest. Let us know if it's any good once you've read it.

I will. Rather pissed off that Waterstones have sold me BGARTBR to me but don't seem to have it in stock. Bastards. What should one do in this situation?

kv_nol, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Just to add to the Albion disappointment - Albion's STORY / concept is by Alan Moore; the actual writing is by Leah Moore & John Reppion. I stuck it out one issue longer than chap did, but cut bait as well.

Uh oh... Ach it was cheap!

KV_NOL, why couldn't you wait a little? I have Big Guy + Rusty and 300 that I'm looking to move!

Leee, Thursday, 8 March 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Aw crap :( Well these are first hand which is always good. Is the Big Guy in good condition?

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeahp! I wear sterilized gloves whenever handling my comics, and infrared goggles so that my STARES OF PHOTONIC EYE BEAMS do not damage the pages.

Rusty and the Big Guy has some antecedents in Giant Robo... worth taking a peek at.

Ha ha! I'm torn, I must admit!

Cheers Forks, that looks interesting!

two weeks pass...
Just ordered it from another seller. Finding this first hand is proving difficult! Here's hoping this guy can help me out, it appears that they have a 10% failure rate and just claim order still being processed. I'll keep the other one active for a while just in case!

three weeks pass...
It didn't work. Sale had to be cancelled due to lack of availability! Stupid Internet. Leee fancy moving your copy on to me at a consideration? Email offboard if you like at kn0l4n80(at)gm4il.c0m (that is eight zero at the end btw, the rest is letters for numbers as usual).

kv_nol! Sorry for not getting back, I kept forgetting! You can webmail me (just click my name). Also, which book are you talking about?

Leee, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

Okay. From what I remember: Japanese comic about WW2. Involved German spies (?) and was part of a series... Any clue?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe Tezuka's Adolf? It was about a 2-3 dooders named Adolf, one of them a half-German Japanese national.

Leee, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Adolf is great! Or at least the first few books are, then it becomes totally ridiculous, in a even-totally-ridiculous-for-Tezuka kind of way.

You are both stars. Many thanks!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Still worth reading! The last vol is almost as nuts as the robot origin story in Phoenix.
