That is cool beyond belief!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. Looks better than the original.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He can afford the expenmsive constume for the top half of his body but still wears rags on his legs. Pah!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Those pants look more comfortable than the tighty reddie / blueys, though, so I won't fault him for that. The Spider Slippers are an interesting (nice?) touch.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone remember the news story a year or two ago about an incident of some kind at a comics convention in India? I don't remember anything about it -- except I think nudity and/or sex may have been involved -- but got the impression that the convention, and local interest in comics, was pretty huge.

This looks cool. And although I wasn't nuts about the Spider-Man manga, the idea behind both is excellent.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think we are only half an hour away from Spiderman China with a big coolies hat on and Spiderman Turkey with a fez.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The first thing I have been able to contribute to ILComics: I lived in India for four years in my early-to-mid-teens, and while I don't remember a huge comics scene there, you could buy an odd selection of American comic books (mostly superhero stuff, can't remember titles, but they were never the really popular titles) from about five years earlier at any book stall, in addition to British comics (the ones aimed at kids, I can't remember the names). They were always kind of dusty and tattered, like they'd been sitting around for a few years. Archie Comics were also HUGE there.

St. Nicholas Ridiculous (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Though this was about 10 years ago.

St. Nicholas Ridiculous (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The article could easily have been misleading about that to make it more newsworthy, or I could've gotten the wrong impression -- Archie being huge there is kind of cool somehow, though. I kind of wish Archie was still cool here.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

So does Archie.

Also: RAKSHASA!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much assumed teeny found the article by Mr Teeny googling for Rakshasa.

(That will make sense to the overlap of comics fans and D&D players.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

And I understand Pete's concern, or what I assume his concern is, but as far as I can tell, it's an Indian creative team who'll be doing the book -- and I figure the concepts behind it originated with same, similar to the Spider-manga (why does this article claim to be the first "transcreation"?). And not to dredge up the whole "can you stereotype your own group, is it bad" argument etc., that's at least less of a concern than if it were the equivalent of the various "Global superheroes" groups that have had one beret-wearing, gong-smacking, hookah-toting, bad-accent-talkin, named-after-randomly-chosen-mythological-figure-being superhero per culture.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(Er, "why does this article claim Spider-Man India is the first 'transcreation'," that is.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Like I said, this was 10 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if a comic book subculture had grown in India since then. They always seemed most interested in the, um, how can I put this politely, dorkiest aspects of Western culture. For example, the only American or British bands to play New Delhi while I lived there were Jethro Tull and Deep Purple (keep in mind, this was the mid-90's). I went to the Deep Purple concert. Metal was still really big.

St. Nicholas Ridiculous (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much assumed teeny found the article by Mr Teeny googling for Rakshasa.

I am a geek all by mySELF thank you very much!! *hmmph*

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tep needs to make a saving throw vs. indignation.

Ha HA!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know how much of a D&D geek you were, though, teeny!

Pavitr Prabhakar? That's so... Elseworlds.

How does the essential "Hey Wow! I've killed my own uncle" plot translate to the different culture?

Vic Fluro, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

He allows a cow to be killeb by inaction.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really a concern, just a tired ole observation. And yes, the Global Guardians were just as bad. I always assumed Madame Medusa was a sikh though with all that hair.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny, is that a 20 or 100 sided die?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a really large d20.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I will never doubt your geek flavors again, teeny :)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

More here (Spidey, not teeny).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Green Goblin, will still be the Green Goblin. However, his origin, powers and new look will be reminiscent of the classical Indian demons of myth"

Trans: The Green Goblin will still be copyright Marvel.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a rumour he was going out with Meera Jain now.

Vic Fluro, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone please name the JJJ analogue.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Spiderman? Indian!
(Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture of Mr. Everything-is-Indian)
Teeny I think we were fashion twins at one point in the hazy past.

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

When Gay Spiderman's graced a thread, I know that ILC has made the big time.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Meera Jain in possible story potential shocker.
