Warren Ellis' Thunderbolts : Civil War :: Peter David's X-Factor : House of M/Decimation

It's funny, because at this point in the game, I wouldn't have expected much from either Ellis or David, and they both have a history of being down on crossovers, but they've both done really well with the new status quo at Marvel and are turning out some of the best work they've done in years, or maybe ever.

Granted, we're only three issues into Thunderbolts and there's plenty of ways it could get fucked up, but it's been very strong so far. I really appreciate the pacing -- the issues aren't overstuffed, but they hit this sweet spot of feeling like full episodes rather than just a fragment of a trade paperback.

I'm inclined to agree - I'm thoroughly astonished that I'm enjoying what I've read of a series that stars unfun Speedball and Venom.

I'm also kinda surprised that I like Mike Deodato's artwork. He's done a lot of pretty ugly stuff in the past, but the draftsmanship in his Thunderbolts issues has been impressive, and the colorist is doing a good job converting a lot of his lines into colors so that they don't appear too busy and over-rendered.

Sure it has Dark!Speedball and Fake!Venom, but they appear to be part of the supporting cast, and that the story is focused on Norman Osborne, Moonstone, and Songbird, plus Bullseye, because in a comic full of sociopaths, he's the most extreme.

That's kinda what piqued my interest - I saw his work in PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL and liked the "flashy-yet-lived-in" quality it had and decided to take a gander at THUNDERBOLTS.

Yeah, I keep getting surprised when I see these second string 90s guys who used to draw in a Image-y style prove that they can, you know, draw. Another good example: Tony Daniel over on Teen Titans. Who knew?

Actually Matthew, I think a better title for this thread would be "When Corporate Mandates manage to breed creativity". The current one is a bit unwieldly.

Tony Daniel has been slightly better than okay for years!

I keep forgetting that Ellis is writing Thunderbolts now; guess I've got another title for the pull list.

When I think of Tony Daniel's old stuff I just remember these really bad faux-Image affectations. When did that stop?

Mr. Perpetua, Saturday, 17 March 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

wtf Tony Daniel is still shitty! I have things to complain about on the internet!!

A B C, Saturday, 17 March 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not saying Tony Daniel is really great, but now he's a competent draftsman.

Mr. Perpetua, Saturday, 17 March 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

Deodato didn't draw most of his stuff in the 90s.

Oh dear, I guess so.

Mr. Perpetua, Sunday, 18 March 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

Haha I think he was a competent draftsman back when he was copying the Image style, too! So, um, anything I point you at will look bad from yr perspective because you hated what he was drawing.

HI DERE, Sunday, 18 March 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, maybe not. I'm totally open to being proven wrong about this.

Mr. Perpetua, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

I guess writers are able to handle more work a month than artists. Ex: Ellis and Vaughan (whose gotta be working on half a dozen titles, right?)

Mordechai Shinefield, Sunday, 25 March 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

Vaughan is frighteningly prolific, but if you notice, he's gradually finishing up projects and taking less comics work as he spends more time on his screenplays and his job as a staff writer for Lost.
