And an obvious ancestor of the above:

No kidding, esp. on the first.

Maybe some Joe Sacco? "Palestine" or "Safe Area Gorazde"?

Jason's "The Left Bank Gang" deals with the same characters, mostly, as "The Salon," but is... even less non-fiction-y.

"Project X: Cup Noodle"?

Douglas, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe I forgot Joe Sacco.

Oilyrags, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Safe Area Gorazde is the one to go for. Palestine is "difficult" and The Fixer is a wee bit overwritten. In fact, the more Sacco seems to have wised up to his role as an inverted-commas-journalist, the less interesting his stuff seems to be. The recent Harper's piece ain't bad, though, although Harper's is still the ugliest looking magazine in the universe.

Hard to believe that everyone, including myself, has neglected to mention Eddie Campbell. I don't think Campbell hews very close to versimilitude, but he does give fine psychic autobiography.

R Baez, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

YES! All of the ALEC stuff I've read has been amazing!

David R., Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

I lurve Eddie Campbell.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

So...Alec by EC?

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 3 May 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

and, obviously, non-fiction-y is a very loose application of the y

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 3 May 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

The Alec books in sort-of order are The King Canute Crowd, Three Piece Suit, How To Be An Artist and After The Snooter. But you can start anywhere, they're all good-to-fantastic and self-contained enough to get by.

Eddie Campbell, yesterday.

American Born Chinese was very good.

jocelyn, Friday, 4 May 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

isn't that for kids?

Dr. Superman, Friday, 4 May 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yoo should definitely read Stuck Rubber Baby if you already haven't, it's one of the best historical comic ever. Don't know how much of it is really autobiographical though.

Tuomas, Sunday, 6 May 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

I would highly recommend No More Shaves. It's sort of like American Splendor in that it consists of different artists pictorializing anecdotes from (often senile) residents of a nursing home. It's a collection of Duplex Planet, which has been running since 1979. And it's just wonderful.

(Holy cow...I just noticed a deal on that website where you can order 50 random issues of Duplex Planet and No More Shaves for $35.)

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 6 May 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Ha. I like that my misconstructed sentence above suggests that Harvey Pekar is an oft-senile resident of a nursing home.

Don't know how much of it is really autobiographical though.

It's fiction, but:

THE SALON is awesome, btw

Dr. Superman, Monday, 7 May 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I just finished a short story based on Sir Ernest Shackleton set in 1914
!!!
I just signed a contract with Houghton-Mifflin to draw a comics-bio of Lenny Bruce, written by Harvey Pekar! Due in late 2008
!

This thread has cost me a lot of money! Have bought the two Saccos (Palestine and the one in Bosnia) as well as No More Shaves. You are all a very bad influence!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Uh PYONGYANG.

Casuistry, Saturday, 12 May 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Safe Area Gorazde = awesome! thanks ILC!

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's kinda like those Toronto guys' autobiog comix, only Sacco just happens to be hanging out in "war-torn Bosnia". It also has explained me Bosnia in a way that I finally understand (though maybe just cuz I'm paying attention and it has pictures--though I guess the news in the 90s had pictures too).

OTM! Also Palestine was brilliant. DV was right about the ending on the other thread.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Huk, you like Joe Staton, right?

(He's not created on the cover, but he's on this, apparently.)

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm, sounds provocative

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 7 June 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

Saw a formidable looking anthology of non-fiction/first-person-reporting graphic narrative whatevs at the comic shop yesterday. Meant to remember the name, but now I forget. It was on the new arrivals wall.
