SPIDER-MAN 3: THE THREAD [WITH SPOILERS]

Because I can't seem to find an existing thread on ILC for this, so fuggit.

Anyhoo, it's definitely spotty - didn't need Sandman @ all (esp. wrt tying Sandy back to Uncle Ben's death), Gwen Stacy had about 30 seconds of screen time, and the Big Reveal by Osborn's butler was quite WHA? - but it was all right, all things considered. I was quite partial to the Disco Dork sequence, zee French restaurant, and Raimi's attempt to turn the flick into a 50s sci-fi homage, as well as the return of the RAIMI CLOSE-UP. Thumbs down: the SPIDEY IS NEW YORK / AMERICA crap that spoiled the first flick for me.

Next time, tho: ONE VILLAIN PLEASE! Or do it up Sinister Six style. Even if it's going to be Jon Turtletaub directing an Akiva Goldsmith script starring Shia LeBouf (sic) and Isla Fisher.

Yeah, it's spotty, but I think the one that it's not needed it's Venom. It's inserted into the movie with not much explanation and the fact that Eddie Brock goes from being someone with loose morals to being THE EVIL ONE is kind of jawdropping. Besides, I loved what Hayden Church does with Sandman, confirming that it's a great character that's been really badly used.

Another thing that it's kind of weird is the ending, it seems rushed (the final reconciliation scene) and doesn't resolve anything.

The good parts: the new Goblin works pretty good, the action scenes are incredible, Peter Parker as sex machine it's funny, it actually ties most of everything up.

Amadeo, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

And the maitre in zee french restaurant is Bruce Campbell, like I suspected!. That makes that scene even better!.

Amadeo, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

liked: Bruze LeCampbell, dancing, ACTION (esp. the first Spidey/Goblin fight)
didn't liked: the unTHEMEy-ness of it all. The first two Spi-Fi movies had definite and deliberate themes guiding them, which gave them a sense a purpose, while this one, um, the theme was, um, A Man Must Put His Wife Before Himself??? Okay.

Best Part: When Stan Lee says "'Nuff said," an affected titter arose a few rows back, and I turned my head and said "SHUT IT, NERDS!"

Dr. Superman, Monday, 7 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

YES re: the themeyness of SP3. Tho I thought a possible theme could be Women Are Nothing But Trifling Self-Obsessed Ego-Driven Dummies.

You are my hero.

Yes, Venom seemed very shoehorned in. And Spiderman's spider-sense seemed pretty shit at noticing a parasitic alien meteor crashing WITHIN VISIBLE DISTANCE.

James Morrison, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

Shoehorned, you say?

Q: I understand you were reticent about having all of these villains in the film.

A: There are so many fears I have making this movie, that’s just one of them. That’s just one in my vast array of things that I’m terrified people won’t like. I had worked on the story with my brother Ivan. Primarily, it was a story that featured the Sandman. It was really about Peter, Mary Jane, Harry and that new character. When we were done, Avi Arad, my partner and president of Marvel at the time, came to me and said “Sam, you’re not paying attention to the fans enough. You need to think about them. You’ve made two movies now with your favorite villains and now you’re about to make another one with your favorite villains. The fans love Venom. He is the fan-favorite. All Spider-Man readers love Venom. Even though you came from ’70s Spider-Man, this is what the kids are thinking about. Please incorporate Venom. Listen to the fans now.”

So, that’s really where I realized, “Okay, maybe I don’t have the whole Spider-Man universe in my head. Maybe I need to learn more about Spider-Man. And maybe incorporate this villain and make some of the real die-hard fans finally happy.”

Note to Avi Arad: STFU.

Does Spidey even have spider-sense in the movies? I can't recall any scenes where he whipped it out.

David R., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

That was from here, BTW.

David R., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

I am also proud that I missed Ptee's SM3 thread just a few below this one.

David R., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

I got really excited when Stan Lee appeared on the screen, I feel like a nerd :$

Amadeo, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

> Does Spidey even have spider-sense in the movies?

He did in the first two. In this one it didn't even go off when the Rad Goblin blindsided him in the first act.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Venom knows he has it, because he makes some weak fan-service joke about it near the end.

Thanks for that interview bit, David R - it explains much.

James Morrison, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. This thread has all the properties of a symbiote...

Mr. Perpetua, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

He didn't have any Spidey sense in the first two when all those people kept knocking in to him when he dropped his books on campus.

Spidey sense is just a convenient writers device, people! It's there when they want it to be, and forgotten otherwise. How else you gonna have people sneak up on a guy?

Has anyone gone out and gotten an evil haircut?

Suedey, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I need to get a haircut anyway!

Dr. Superman, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

I saw this, it was kinda dumb. So emo! So many tearz!

Leee, Sunday, 20 May 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

I thought it was great! I saw it by myself, though, so I wasn't too embarrassed by enjoying the dorky bits.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 21 May 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Not a great film, I mean, but it's hardly deserved the slagging it's got.
