Transmetropolitan as a whole

Just picked up 'One More Time'. What do people think of Transmet as a sixty-issue whole, and of this end-book in particular?

There are definite flaws to be found in the thing, but overall it's kept me hungry for more in a way that Preacher didn't, and where Preacher's 'warm, happy ending' made me retch and vomit as though I had swallowed the 3,000-year-old blood of an ancient pharoah, Transmet's version felt like a proper epilogue and served the function of putting the characters properly to rest in a way that felt subtly satisfying rather than just moronic.

I was actually very annoyed by the ending. Since the main character seemed to be a stand-in for the writer, the "happiness" of the ending seemed like even more of a cop-out than it would have otherwise. But maybe if I had ever actually liked Spider Jerusalem as a character, I wouldn't have been so annoyed.

Weeeeelllll...

SPOILER SPACE

YOU HEARD ME

...I thought that 'one percent' comment on the near-to-final-as-dammit page was a bit of a cop-out, in terms of the writer giving the reader what they wanted, rather than the more downbeat and MUCH more realistic - or even 'artistically valid' - option. And, having seen Jerusalem displayed, sometimes very subtly, as a creature with human feelings and desires which I sympathised with, I'd be the first to admit that I did want that ending.
However, having seen Spider BURIED UP THE WRITER'S ARSE in the manner of Jesse Custer on more occasions than necessary, I would've been happy with a more downbeat ending too.

I Actually missed the end of this series. I know that Spider was going senile towards the end; did he pull through or did he end up a genial and happier vegetable? (I'm guessing the former based on the reactions.)

The Filthy Assistants were great.

from the first thirty issues: POLITICS REALLY QUITE BADLY DONE I WILL BROOK NO ARGUMENT, but the gonzo journalism bits make gonzoism more attractive than most uh actual gonzo journalism. i might go and reread some of it now.

Tom, are you on AIM ever?

It did update the Gonzo Journalism in that the opponent stopped being Nixon and started being Blair, which I thought was fun.

The "Spider watches all the spin-offs while fucked up" issue was great, even if the series did later run perilously close to the "Heroic Spider" pisstake.
