Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Now I'm largely nostalgia-free when it comes to most forms of spandex, but the Batman has always held fascination for me even if I didn't actually follow the canonical products (more of a The Animated Series sort of fellow) and now it's time for me to geek out (NOW??) and plump Mask of the Phantasm.

Mark Hamill's never been better, and Dana Delaney brings an appropriate amount of foxiness and OH SNAPITUDE to a fairly common plot which, through its execution, skated on the raw edges of the epic (for a ~90 minute film, considering!).

(And it even has an Akira shout out.)

I actually bought this a couple months ago out of love for the animated series, but I haven't watched it yet.

Not to get your expectations hopelessly high, but it's GREBT.

I remember renting this after it came out and just being flabbergasted by it. This was after I hadn't been buying comics for a few years (was it '95?) and I also hadn't really paid much attention to the Animated Series. But I was in a really small town convenience store/video rental dealy and it was either B: MotP or Danny DeVito in Renaissance Man, and, I like DeVito, but not really that much.
And yeah, holy crap!
Very cool indeed. I should watch this again.

Brilliant angst sequence, IIRC:

Batman: I can't go on forever! I have to have a normal life! You see that - don't you??

Gravestone:(in angry lettering) WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYNNE!!!

(crash of thunder)

I remember being flabbergasted when Batman knocked Joker's teeth out, or at least made him bleed.
That's nothing special for a comic book, but in a kiddy cartoon, that's pretty unheard of.

Don't forget the between-the-scenes sexing! (otm about the blood, def., it was a watershed moment for me when I SAW IT IN THE THEATER = BEHOLD MY INDIE CRED.)

I loved the mofo moment in the beginning where, after a fight, there's a guy moaning under a busted door and as Bats walks by, gives him one last STOMP. OOOOh I'm watching this again tomorrow tonight.

Man, I'm kind of retroactively regretting that the last couple times I saw it it was with very young kids. I haven't seen it in years, I should see if it's in my Netflix queue or not.

(heh "indie cred"!)

(I love his movie but I don't want to marry it or anything)

(I am saving myself for "Jacob's Ladder")

I will celebrate my nation's birthday by watching this movie tomorrow.
