NOT SPECUMALATION, AKSHEL TRUFAX:
Moffat Writing DreamWorks' Tintin Source: The Hollywood Reporter October 2, 2007
British scribe Steven Moffat is writing DreamWorks' Tintin, the movie trilogy collaboration from Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg that adapts the European comic strip created by Herge, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Moffat is best known for penning the new "Doctor Who" series and the BBC's "Jekyll."
In the comics, Tintin is a young Belgian reporter and world traveler who is aided in his adventures by his faithful dog Snowy. He later was joined by such colorful characters as Captain Haddock, Professor Cuthbert Calculus and bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson.
Kathleen Kennedy is serving as producer on the three feature films, which will be made using performance-capture technology and produced in digital 3-D. Jackson and Spielberg are each directing an installment, with the helmer of the third movie to be determined.

WOW.
Well that MAY scupper the Moffat for Who clamourers but this is clearly good news if you think a Tintin film is a good idea. Which to be fair, I'm not super sure of myself...
― Pete, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)
certainly not if it comes out looking anything like the polar express
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)
certainly not if Spielberg is within 500 miles of the production at any time

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will indeed team up to portray bumbling detectives, Thomson and Thompson, in the live-action adaptation of 'Tintin'.

― James Mitchell, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 13:39 (seventeen years ago)
Hey, that sounds suspiciously like a good idea.
― The Way of the Diamond Spirit (Oilyrags), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
This and Serkis as Haddock are good ideas. I'm still far from convinced that the project is a good idea.
― chap, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:58 (seventeen years ago)
I think it should be a CGI Tintin, looking like a beefed-up (but still disarmingly 2-D) version of Herge's cartoon, to emphasise the idealistic impossibility of his being. Every other character should be played by an actor and look mostly unlike their cartoon counterpart.

Thomson and Thompson are supposed to look like twins :|
― what U cry 4 (jim), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)
Hold on, when did this turn from a "3D animation" to "live-action"? And Jim is right, Dupond & Dupondt are supposed to look and speak alike, they should be played by the same actor.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 07:27 (seventeen years ago)
OK, lots of news here:http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=24066
Jamie Bell's an alright actor, but I find him a bit of an irritating little squirt myself. Also, Unicorn/Rackham is my least favourite of the two-parters.
― chap, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
Good choice, imo. Jamie Bell was impressive in Hallam Foe.
― DavidM, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)
Odd, I just remembered that it was all over the news that some other kid had been picked about six months ago.
― chap, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
Unicorn/Rackham is one of my favourites, actually -- pickpockets! treasure! twist endings! shark submarines! SHARK SUBMARINES! -- but yeah, it's not necessarily the one I'd most like to see adapted (which would probably be The Calculus Affair, or The Seven Crystal Balls -- or Cigars/Blue Lotus, especially if they kept in "in period".)
Speaking of which, are these going to be period pieces, or modern-day updates. If Tintin files his copy via email, I will shoot myself.
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)
calculus affair would be so fucking rad
― max, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)
Peter Jackson should do Crystal Balls/Prisoners, the spookiness of it would suit him.
― chap, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
paul greengrass should do calculus affair
― max, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)
Yes!
― chap, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, it had been Thomas Sangster, who was surprisingly non-annoying as Liam Neeson's kid in Love, Actually, and was then awesome in the two-part Family of Blood in Doctor Who.
Haha Toby Jones + Mackenzie Crook = quality stunt casting!
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)
Is Toby Jones Calculus?
― chap, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 16:35 (sixteen years ago)
I'm guessing Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook for the Bird Brothers, and Gad Elmaleh as Calculus.
― Richard Jones, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 11:16 (sixteen years ago)
According to Wiki Jones is Silk (the pickpocket guy).
― chap, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 12:00 (sixteen years ago)
re-reading these--spielberg is basically the best director possible to get at what makes these books so special i think
― max, Friday, 6 February 2009 04:15 (sixteen years ago)
well maybe thats not true. but the comics--especially the early ones--read like spielberg flicks, heartwarming action-adventures about the power of friendship with a healthy dose of broad comedy
I think that's certainly what attracted Spielberg to them, yes. You get the feeling that he could tell a story in a good approximation of Herge's style. The tricky part is the script, though- no-one else who's tried Tintin has really got the voice right.

Okay, these look pretty much as awful as I expected. Why the heck do Spielberg & co think people want to see quasi-realistic CGI version of Tintin characters? At least they could've made them more cartoonish, like the human characters in Pixar movies.
