Not a ton of comic stuff at GenCon (Indianapolis), but hey. I'm going and so is mr teeny, is anyone else?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going, but my girlfriend is and my friend's comdedy-goth band The Gothsicles will be playing.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Yep, I'll be there. Girlfriend too, but she's larping nearly the entire time, I think.

The minor-league ballpark is right around the corner! They're playing a game on Friday against Louisville.

I have a game scheduled every day but Saturday (when I'm figuring mostly on seminars and checking out Indy), but each one only takes up a few hours, so I'm pretty available. teeny and whoever else, don't let me forget to give you my cellphone #.

(Oh, and I'm told cell phones often don't work in the convention center itself, just as a word of warning.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh: and going over my schedule about ten minutes ago, I realized that I will probably arrive at GenCon mere hours (honestly) after finishing a novel. Anyone meeting me, there is no chance you will be meeting me in anything like an ordinary frame of mind.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Stop lying Tep, novelists don't have deadlines

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I have a thesis to write when classes resume! Not to mention all the classes I've put off taking because they're boring.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Have I told you lately that you're my hero, Tep?

Huck, Friday, 16 July 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Just turn in the novel as your thesis!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing heroic about loitering in graduate school! Well, unless you do it in a cape.

xpost; I actually suggested that in a different program and was given an icy stare.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

gothsicles omg!!!!

mr teeny went to that one year, he said it was a hoot. Also the Indiana state fair is going on at the same time, it's an easy bus ride (and the fairgrounds are next to the great art museum!) http://www.in.gov/statefair/fair/food/index.html

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:54 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Stop lying Tep, novelists don't have deadlines

Finished it last night: 101,653 words since June. Told you so :)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 8 August 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
registration began today at noon and of course the servers are already fux0red. Anyone going this year?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Eh, I can't be bothered now that it's no longer in Milwaukee.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

:( the indy site is really nice though.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I will be doing the TRUE DUNGEON six months pregnant!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't even want to know what that means.

Huk-L, Monday, 16 May 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Is it in Indy again? I might be up for ILC drinks one night if it is...

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

yes, it's in indy! I'll revive this thread once it actually gets close, I just had it on the brain today because of registration opening.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I had to do the math to find out if that meant teeny is PREGNANT RIGHT NOW, which is silly, but anyway, congratulations! Belatedly and in the wrong thread, but oh well.

I'll be there again, probably through Monday morning. I'm waiting for Lindsey to get home from Memphis so we can register, because most of the things I want to do are expected to fill up quickly, and I'm trying to schedule things around networking opportunities.

Once again I will have just finished a novel (by a wider margin this time, though) when GenCon starts, so I'd be up for doing something (when I'm in the middle of writing something, I'm bad company). My email address works, and I can email my cell # to anyone who'll be around.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

cool, I was selfishly worried that maybe you would have gone to DC or wherever by that time (although I do hope that works out for you). The registration servers are well and truly hosed, so I hope it's sorted out just in time for you. I would love to meet up again and will exchange info when it gets a little closer.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Right now if we go to DC it'll be in the fall, it looks like -- one of the benefits of that is that we can go to at least one more GenCon :) It's funny, the amount of money we spent last year was such that airfare wouldn't have added THAT much ... and yet I know that if we had to fly we'd be much less likely to go. It's all in the head, I think.

If registration is hosed, hey, that means it's less likely that the Mage and Cthulhu games are filling up. Oh, and True Dungeon-wise, in case you're not registered yet and/or this matters for you: it's not noted in the reg listings, but the games from 9pm and later are "hardcore," tougher monsters and whatnot. Harder monsters but more experience.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

for true dungeon, one of our crew is getting all seven tickets for a single slot (pre-9pm) and then we're all lined up for them--I'm in the first seven but if I drop out, someone will take my place. I may drop out because it sounds like it might be too physical (balance beams, dodging water blasts) for me, plus there are no bathroom breaks. But if I do decide to go, there will be two doctors in my group, so hey! We seriously have like 30 people going this year and are running a bit of a con-within-a-con where we run games with people we haven't seen in a while and all that.

I haven't even bothered looking at the events listing because I knew the servers would be hosed AGAIN, but I'll post up what I'm doing if I get my shit together. I know a lot of my friends are doing cthulhu!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

The main thing about True Dungeon last year as far as physical stuff went was how dark it was -- easy to trip over things, especially since it was so loud (the loudness is something they've said they're correcting this year, although since they've doubled the number of groups, I dunno...) But I don't know how different it is this year.

You should demand xp for the fetus if you do it, though!

I'm planning on more games this year, of the sort that I'd never get a chance to do otherwise -- there's a riff on Apocalypse Now with cereal characters (Tony the Tiger, Count Chocula, etc), a Paranoia version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory ... there's no way I can pass those up.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

We are going to shut down the servers from 5:00 pm PST on 5/16/05 to
7:00 am PST on 5/17/05 to perform a database upgrade on the system. We
hope this will increase connectivity and response time for event
registration. If you had soemthing in your cart, it will remain there
until you check out. We apologize for the inconvenience.

nobody I know has gotten through the system.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, thank you for the update -- 7:00am PST is IHAVENOIDEA:00 am in Indiana Time, but that sounds good. Lindsey's just now in the door and will appreciate not having to worry about this until tomorrow, I'm sure.

(You'll get to meet her this time! After last year's White Wolf-funded drinking disaster, she has sworn off free alcohol.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I successfully registered!

I'll add stuff later probably, because two of the games filled up -- Willy Wonka Paranoia and Cereal Killers -- and I want to do True Heroes. But here I am thus far:

Thursday
Freelancing Seminar 2-4
Blackmoor 6-11

Friday
Exalted 10-12
True Dungeon 1-something I think
Planescape 5-6

Saturday
Cthulhu 12-4
Mage 4-6

Sunday
Mage 10-12
Networking Bullshit 2-5 (it's a seminar I don't have any interest in but an editor I would like to see)

So basically nights work for me, except for Thursday. We're there Sunday night too.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

ok funny thing about True Heroes--we had one guy buy two sets of four (it was the most he could find together) but then one other guy in our group, post-crash, found he had a complete set of seven still in his basket from pre-crash and bought those. At the same time. So now we're swimming in them.

There are TWO different True Dungeon adventures.
One is Assault Atop Castle Greyhawk, and one is Battle Below Castle
Greyhawk. They are completely different adventures. Here's what we
have:

Thursday 1 PM - 7 tickets for ATOP
Thursday 10:25 PM - 4 tickets for BELOW
Friday 10:37 AM - 4 tickets for BELOW

The gay sex jokes have already been made by my mailing list, no need to go there. So no promises but I may be able to get you and/or Lindsey in on one of these if you want. I think my hubby and I are picking out our schedules and registering tonight, I'll post my schedule when that happens.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

oh wait I meant true dungeon. nevermind.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Lindsey's only just starting her registering -- she was gone all weekend so didn't have a chance to go through the catalogue -- and apparently TD is selling out quick. So we may have to take you up on that!

It's crazy, eventually they're going to need a whole True Dungeon wing. Twice as many games this year and they're still selling out the first couple days.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Nope: she just got registered, and got a True Dungeon slot that fit her LARP-heavy schedule. She's all excited about getting to dress up for her Shadowrun game.

Thanks for the offer, though :)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

The weekend I finish camp on the sunday of! DAMN YOU FATES.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

sweet, Tep, good to hear. I'm working my way through the list, looks like I'll be doing a lot of lighthearted, short stuff--I used to love trying out new games but now that practically everything's on the d20 system (which I haven't learned yet, don't tell!) it doesn't seem as fun. Also I don't want to be stuck in a four-hour slot if the baby decides to stand on my bladder that day.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, d20 is the new GURPS in that respect (notice how few GURPS games there are) -- although quicker-paced for the most part. It's good for adaptations -- any movie or book series that gamers would want to convert (Star Wars etc), d20 probably does a good job with it.

If you know D&D, though, you know d20.

That's why I was looking forward to the Cereal Killers game, though, the lightheartedness -- but now I don't have to be awake enough for a game at 8am, so I'm not cursing the fates.

Greg, run away from camp for a day!
