Is the JL:TNF Special Cooke-made?

Oilyrags, Monday, 3 March 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, it is! So, that too.

Oilyrags, Monday, 3 March 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

Omega, maybe that New Frontier thing, the last few weeks of stuff.

Jordan, Monday, 3 March 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

The shipping list has relocated! http://www.diamondcomics.com/shipping/newreleases.txt

For me:

JUSTICE LEAGUE THE NEW FRONTIER SPECIAL--yeah, for the Cooke effect
YOUNG LIARS #1--the new David Lapham thing (I almost said David Lasky, which is v. different)
LOGAN #1--BKV plus Risso doing Wolverine, it has possibiliies
OMEGA THE UNKNOWN #6--gets weirder and better every month

Douglas, Monday, 3 March 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

DETECTIVE COMICS #842: Dini's one-shot amusements to balance Morrison's Epic-Batman.
NORTHLANDERS #4: Vikings say, 'Fuck.'
YOUNG LIARS #1: Willing to try any new Vertigo series. Esp now that so many are gone.
PAX ROMANA #2: TOTALLY. 100% Best new series of 2008 so far.
RIDE DIE VALKYRIE #3: Woo! This finally finishes!!!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #552: Might have to sacrifice this for all the new x-titles.
CABLE #1: New X-Title!
LOGAN #1: New [Non-Canon] X-Title!
OMEGA UNKNOWN #6: Lethem Rising
PENANCE RELENTLESS #5: Penance V. Nitro.
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #17
UNCANNY X-MEN #496
X-FORCE #2: One more shot and then I bail ship on this.

Wow. Huge list this week. The definites are: Pax Romana (!!!), Uncanny X-Men, and maaaybe Cable. Everything else is up in the air. And maybe I'll look at Justice League New Frontier too... so consider most of these as potentials.

Mordy, Monday, 3 March 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

what is pax romana?

Jordan, Monday, 3 March 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

DETECTIVE COMICS #842
GREEN LANTERN #28

I read the first five parts to the Action "Legion" epic. That is a cool storyline.

earlnash, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

Atom, Infinity Inc, New Frontier special, Casanova (finally!), Amazing Spider-Man, and maybe Teen Titans Year One.

Garrett Martin, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

Pax Romana is the new Hickman comic (he did Nightly News). In it, the Catholic Church discovers time travel and sends back a group to change history to better benefit the Church. It's super cool, and has people like THE GENE POPE.

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

This is the Catholic Church, well known for its interest in scientific research?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Missed Omega! That too. And I might take a look at Logan, although I haven't read anything X related for a jillion weeks.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to (snore, sorry) wait for Omega for the trade. But I'll def'ly pick up the Darwyn, that's actually quite exciting.

In other (good) news: As a supplement to my meagre freelance income, I've picked up a few shifts at a Toronto secondhand bookstore, with a GIANT comics section in the basement. (Lost of Wagner/Grant/Breyfogle Detectives to peruse, discounts on remaindered GNs, etc.)

So now I (kind of) work in a comic book store. My 10-year-old self would be proud.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Pax Romana is ace BTW. If anything it's even more information-dense than The Nightly News was. It's also about a month late...

Stone Monkey, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

DETECTIVE COMICS #842 - It's not the JHW3 art originally promised, but it's v. good.
JUSTICE LEAGUE THE NEW FRONTIER SPECIAL - hubba (2x)
MIDNIGHTER #17 - must drop, art terrible
TEEN TITANS YEAR ONE #3 (OF 6) - oh yeah
YOUNG LIARS #1 (MR) - Lapham draws again!
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #17 - Punish me, next, Frank!

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

So this is obv a sci-fi comic about the Church. But seriously, don't let religion hang-ups get in the way of reading it. Pax is incredible and I so highly recommend it.

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

ME AS THE WHITE RABBIT:

BUFFY - now very cloverfield.
OMEGA - the COUNTDOWN TO PANTER begins!
JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER: take my money Mr. Cooke.
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL: The last issue may have been Chaykin's best work this millenium.

R Baez, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

NEW FRONTIER whee!

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

That Chaykin Punisher really was good!

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

I always feel a bit soiled when I read anything by Chaykin.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Is that a bad thing?

R Baez, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Howard Chaykin has only a few tricks, but they are some good tricks. I re-read the first twelve issues of American Flagg! in the past few months and was really impressed. That guy could pack a whole lot of story and plot into a 22 page comic. Those twelve issues would have been played out over fifty in some comics today.

By comparison I re-read The Shadow mini-series and it seemed to have a really rushed ending after three issues of setup. It is too bad he didn't sign on to at least write some of the issues afterwards, although the stuff that Andy Helfer/Kyle Baker and Bill Sienkiewicz came up with was pretty good.

earlnash, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

New Frontier special was not all that special, just okay.
Midnighter was actually kinda okay, the art was a lot better than previous issues, but I still dropped it (and GLC too).
Detective was pretty ace.

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 6 March 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

New Frontier special was not all that special, just okay.

Sounds like Bizarro Dr. Superman to me.

For me, comics were uniformly nifty this week - OMEGA continued on its charmingly wayward path, PWJ redeemed a hideous Maleev cover with another ace character study, I thought NEW FRONTIER proved a worthy appendix, CASANOVA = a beautiful burst of bright blue ultraviolence, and BUFFY overcame its "decent to pretty good" status quo by being genuinely great. Jus' swell.

R Baez, Thursday, 6 March 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

i thought this thread was about a prince album

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 6 March 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

it's about a prince comic book

Jordan, Friday, 7 March 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

Detective was pretty good. I wish Peter Milligan was writing a regular series for DC. The Programme is a also good read. It is funny that the prelude annual and the two follow up issues to the big Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul were so much better than the actual storyline, which was pretty goofy.

If I was DC's Czar I would give Batman & The Outsiders to someone like Peter Milligan to write. Considering the quirky nature of the original two Outsiders series, I bet this guy could create some fun comics with them. Which is unlike the current series, which has about an issue of story spread out across four very mediocre issues.

I like Green Lantern but I think they are going to need to start adding a footnote column along the bottom of the pages. I sure hope that Johns doesn't pull a Magneto with Sinestro in this thing and try to have him be a "hero" in the Blackest Night arc. I've got a feeling this is what is being setup.

Today I also got the last 52 trade paperback. I've only read the first issue of the book and I liked the final fight with Steel and Luthor. I completely missed when Steel was created in the 90s, but at least going by 52, I think he is a pretty cool character.

earlnash, Friday, 7 March 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

What the eff is Green Lantern about right now? Are they telling the exact same story in both GL and GLC? What is the THEME? Who is Hal Jordan? He's certainly not the same guy I dug back when I was a kid and was trying to find some work/life balance
Now he just seems to be some random alpha male with an outdated haircut.

Dr. Superman, Friday, 7 March 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

er, Hal Jordan was trying to find work/life balance, not me when I was a kid. I'm thinking of the Len Wein/Dave Gibbons stuff. As always.

Dr. Superman, Friday, 7 March 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

> I wish Peter Milligan was writing a regular series for DC.

POOF! Your wish is granted. Start getting Infinity Inc pulled.

Oilyrags, Friday, 7 March 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

Did Omega #6 actually ship? I didn't see it in the, uh, usual places.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I got it.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

I got it.

Jordan, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

So, uh, Young Liars is basically a nihilist version of Scott Pilgrim, right?

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
