What is the point of Comic Cons?

I guess I am going to Emerald City in May (BLO'M is gonna be there!), and I'm having a hard time getting excited about it. Is it just gonna be a big hall full of sweaty dudes selling back issues and arguing finer points of why Sue Reed can still see when she's invisible, but Martian Manhunter can't.
Will getting sketches be free/fun? CAN I GET A "DON'T BLAME ME, I VOTED FOR HARVEY DENT" t-shirt? Will I mostly feel uncomfortable, shameful, overly adult?

anyone else going???

By far the best thing about the one comic con I've been to was the fancy dress competition. The prize went to two blokes who came as Galactus' legs.

I went to a couple of San Diegos back when I was in CAPA-Alpha ('92, '94) and the appeal was definitely in hanging out with friends, eating-drinking-smoking, vicious gossip, etc. -- the con programming was kinda by-the-way. One fun thing that a couple of friends do is pick a favorite character, get a good sketchbook, and ask artists to do their version of that character. Jeff Gelb has something like 40 years of great Captain Marvel sketches. (The Clowes is hysterical.)

total lolz at Galactus' legs.
