Nominations are out.
I'm rarely up-to-date on this kind of stuff, usually reading them years after the fact, but I like looking at these lists, they often have underlooked quality books and future TPB's-to-read. (Though isn't it kind of strange how writers get nominated for ALL the books they've written instead of one? Kind of ignoring those, too many to discuss) Post your impressions of anything nominated that you've read.
* Mr. Wonderful / Dan Clowes - Not bad, enjoyed it more than Ice Haven. You can still read it for free online, so you might as well. * The Boys / Garth Ennis - It's enjoyable, but more of a download vs. a purchase. The evil gritty pastiche has been done so many times now, but it remains a guilty pleasure. * Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Joss Whedon etc. - Only read the first TPB - it's okay. I hope it gets better. * Y The Last Man / Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra - Still one more trade to go. This series has not disappointed. As good or better than anything BKV's done. * Monster / Naoki Urasawa - TOTALLY underrated, awesome series. Thrilling, disturbing adventure. I read the whole thing in scanlations a few years back. The artwork gets better over time, too. I hope by the time the last (18th!) volume comes out more people are aware of it... Funny to classify as "continuing" when it ended over half a decade ago, but what the hey. * Perry Bible Fellowship / Nicholas Gurewitch - fucking great, of course. I'm inspired that this comic could become a success. * Mouse Guard / David Petersen - so-so premise/story, but the art is pretty interesting. * Yotsuba&! / Kiyohiko Azuma - Hilarious series, never fails to put a smile on my face. It is REALLY aimed at kids? I'm sometimes confused about who the series is aimed at. * Exit Wounds / Rutu Modan - It's got this overall aestetic I like. Also not quite what it seems at first. Not bad.

Best Comics-Related Book Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean, by Douglas Wolk (Da Capo Press)
nice
I want to live in a world where R. F. Outcault was a secret identity for the superhero Michel Foucault.

Jason's "I Killed Adolf Hitler" is one of the funniest things I read last year. And I didn't think it was funny at all the first time I read it--then I found myself narrating the plot to my wife and cracking up...
Yuichi Yokoyama's "New Engineering" is genuinely not like anything else at all I have ever looked at.
I found it weird that Matt Fraction asked in his interview for Comic Foundry if anyone could think of a great married-Peter-and-Mary-Jane story, considering that he WROTE the Sensational Spider-Man annual that got nominated for Best Single Issue, which is just that.
"I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets" is freaking amazing.
Both of the Sunday Press books in the design category made me whimper at how pretty they are.

A seventh grader who hasn't read a book all year is now asking directly for the Yotsuba volumes by name, so I think, besides all the professional praise, this series must be good. We keep it in YA though.
Jimmy Gownley is all over that list. What do you all think of Amelia Rules? I am a recent convert.

"Justice League of America #11: "Walls," by Brad Meltzer and Gene Ha (DC)"
There have to be quite a few single issue stories better than this one.
The issue of Detective by Paul Dini with the Joker and Robin in the stolen car is way better than this issue of JLA.

or even an issue of Witchblade where Witchy fights a trio of cheerleaders in a mudbath!

I just wanted to say that I Killed Adolf Hitler was a great recommendation!
