This is the most awesome news.
has anyone not read Seaguy's story so far.

Yay, Seaguy is my favourite GM thing for like 10 years.

Some other ILC bro (or a bro in my mind) has a webcomic, too, but I can't remember who.

so disappointing that Stewart jacked a Paul Pope GN title for his own thing. (or non-title, ha ha ho)
― energy flash gordon, Thursday, 24 April 2008 03:51 (sixteen years ago) link
Did anyone even read the Pope SIN TITULO? Not to be flip or anything (I know, this is tha interwebs and all), but I'm a pretty big fan of Pope and didn't even hear about that book until, what, six months ago on the outside? THB got around a lot more because it was a floppy-type comic. OGNs were much more of a weirdie thing in the late nineties and didn't have nearly the same visibility.
― Matt M., Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:57 (sixteen years ago) link
Well, I read it. If that counts.
It definitely got some press attention at the time, because there was all the amusement about Ira Thingummy giving interviews and then Pope coming out of the closet when Dr Richardson came out.
― energy flash gordon, Friday, 25 April 2008 09:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Reading that makes me feel drunk. I don't understand. What?

---WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Seconded! Jacking Paul Pope's a good thing, guy can't write or draw after all
― Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:17 (sixteen years ago) link
(I mean that I've seen so far, which is limited to Batman Year 100 and an issue of X-Statix, feel free to correct me)
― Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:23 (sixteen years ago) link
If you don't think Pope can write or draw based on BATMAN YEAR 100, then there's no use recommending something like 100% or any of the THB reprint books which should be out in a few months.
― Matt M., Tuesday, 6 May 2008 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link
Lots of his stuff is better written and drawn than BATMAN YEAR 100 - the original Escapo short is stratospherically better* - but yeah, if you came away from those thinking he's a worthless cartoonist or illustrator then further investigation is probably pointless.
*(Batman is better written than the Escapo GN.)
― energy flash gordon, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:02 (sixteen years ago) link
PPope can draw like a MOTHERFUCKER. He's only working at about 50% capacity BMY100, but if you don't see it, then there ain't much point in trying to set you straight. Agree that he's not much of a writer (duck and cover), but I can't really see him illustrating other people's stuff for a living, so I accept the limitation. Escapo and the THB universe stuff have so much mindblowing, get-down-and-beg quality art that I can't even say thing right. I fucking worship the guy.
Anyway, Slaves of Mickey Eye! WHOOOOOO...OOO! Been wondering for years if this would happen, or if it was just a joke at the end of issue 3. So psyched!
― contenderizer, Saturday, 10 May 2008 20:29 (sixteen years ago) link
Not much of a writer? Pshaw. Admittedly I've only read a few of his things, but they were refreshingly realistic and un-cynical/fun, given their gritty future settings, with likeable characters and interesting stories.
― James Morrison, Monday, 12 May 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link
I agree about the great ideas and likeable characters, and while things are rolling along, he's solid, but his stories have a way of fuzzing out before they go anywhere. Like he knows how to create moments, but not tales. But yeah, "not much of a writer" was waaaay too harsh.
― contenderizer, Monday, 12 May 2008 03:48 (sixteen years ago) link
If I get the chance I'll read more of his stuff (obv I haven't seen him at his best), but to this day I'd love to know what the point of Batman Year 100 was
― Niles Caulder, Monday, 12 May 2008 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Besides, SEAGUY 2!!!!!!
what the point of Batman Year 100 was
BIFF! POW!

Batman year 100 might be my favorite comic ever! So much of the story is in the pictures themselves, which is what comics are good for.

Speaking of the THB reprint/collection, anyone know what's happening with that? I've got holes in my collection, big enough to park a truck in, that need filling.
― Stone Monkey, Thursday, 22 January 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago) link
Battling Boy first I think.
Also he’s promised and then piked on THB collections so many times already that it would almost be a shame to actually put one out now.

SEAGUY 2, yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.

what's the name of that moon of Saturn that looks like a giant eye? Maybe Mickey Eye is based there.
― The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 23 January 2009 13:05 (sixteen years ago) link
I loved the new issue, but everywhere I look online tho it seems as tho people just can't understand what's going on. I'm not saying the narrative is super linear, but this, "I'm confused," trope seems a bit disingenuous. It is about as confusing (or maybe less so) than a David Lynch film. Is it just that people aren't expecting comic books to resist interpretation?

http://www.factualopinion.com/the_factual_opinion/2009/04/the-virgin-read-her-liveblog-version-of-seaguy-involves-using-the-symbol-keyboard.html
and from Hannibal Tabu, comicbookresources reviewer:
"Really, "Seaguy: The Slaves of Mickey Eye" #1? If you read the first series, this will make no sense. If you've never heard of the first series, this will make no sense. Like walking into a foreign film without subtitles, just ... wow, no. Even with that one good panel about the brainbow ... still, no."
― Mordy, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 09:03 (fifteen years ago) link
eh, this is Morrison's schtick; I think folks who've been used to his less opaque stuff blanch when they run into this... though after his batman run, I don't see how they can not know what's under the wrapper

I'm not saying the narrative is super linear, but this, "I'm confused," trope seems a bit disingenuous.
These people are a bit slow and unable to handle surrealism.
― The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link
Ah, it's the old fanboy confusion between "difficult" and "makes me use my brain".
Also, it wasn't a very confusing comic.
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link
Why would people who are confused by surrealism read a Morrison comic in the first place? Especially considering that the first series wasn't exactly a prime example of straightforward and realistc storytelling either.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link
The only thing I can think is that ASS brought a lot of readers onto the Morrison bandwagon who then read Batman + Final Crisis as aberrations and are now only realizing (with Seaguy) that Morrison isn't doing standard narrative.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link
(Though, there's no excuse for ComicBookResources writer to not know that. Did he think Seven Soldiers, Doom Patrol, or the Invisibles were models of comprehensibility?)
Those books are pretty comprehensible. So is Seaguy, as long as you aren't hoping for just some spandex fistfights.
― Zero Transfats Waller (Oilyrags), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 12:06 (fifteen years ago) link
well, there's kinda no excuse for Hannibal Tabu in general, right?

― Dan I., Tuesday, 14 April 2009 06:58 (fifteen years ago) link

― mh, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link
on the surface these comics are not particularly dense or difficult to follow - but I think the average reader is probably confused as to what the point is (since the point is not GOOD GUY SMASH BAD GUY. er well kinda anyway)
― Pre-Beatles Yoko Ono (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 22:48 (fifteen years ago) link
"by the time we get into the third book, it’s quite a serious superhero story. This is my Watchmen, really. This is where I’m really getting to talk about the idea of the superhero.
It’s kind of a conspiracy story. It’s something like The Prisoner. We’re starting to see more and more about what actually happens. This series is a transition from the world we're living in today into the world of Seaguy, which is taking place maybe 50 or 70 years in the future. So believe it or not, it's actually quite realistic in the end in the sense that it’s going to explore how the world got that way and why it got that way and the real piece of shit that's behind it all. It’s a big superhero book. The thing that it’s closest to of my previous work is All Star Superman"

one suspects they're either waiting to launhc it before Vol 3, or holding right off to do a Complete Seaguy after vol 3

I'm guessing the latter, since DC don't seem to be in much of a hurry to reprint vol. 1.

SEAGUY 3 was about 2/3rds written, according to Mr. Morrison this weekend. Also, he spoke positively about the possibility of a FLEX MENTALLO collection and dropped word that there would be an ABSOLUTE WE3, with about 10 pages of art from Mr. Quitely. He may have released other news, but I only was able to catch about half his panel.
― Matt M., Monday, 26 July 2010 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link
A properly released Flex Mentallo would be awesome. The quicker Seaguy gets wrapped up the better. I've a feeling that it could be my favourite Morrison work when it's completed.
