Anyone read "BOOKS OF MAGICK: LIFE DURING WARTIME #1"?

I did, but I think I was semi-drunk/overtired at the time. Can't remember too much and will have to re-read but do know I was put off by the fact thate Timothy Hunter was, like, all angsty and wanting to take some special k at a club. What the hell?

Yup, exactly the same circumstances - a bit too drunk and/or tired, comic a bit meh. I tried to re-read last night but must have been too tired because I couldn't get beyond about page 5. Will try one more time, but I more than strongly suspect it is teh suck.

I'm basically waiting to see what y'all say before picking it up ... I lost track of the original Books of Magic when I tapered off on reading comics for a few years, read a few issues of Names of Magic, but have very little idea what's going on with Tim Hunter.

The first issue of this series don't help in that regard - I got more re: the plot of #1 from reviews of the comic than the actual book (but I'm a super-lazy reader). However, like I said on another thread, Dean Ormston draws great floating eyeballs. And I like the of the magic-free alt.universe / prison / whatever the hell venue Tim Hunter's in.

... okay, I have no idea what you're referring to in that last sentence, of course, but it's got my interest.

There should be the word IDEA between "the" and "of" in my last sentence - hope that doesn't spoil your newfound interest, Tep.

Nope! I just don't know what the deal is with the magic-free alternate universe and all. So far, though, I think this is something I'll wait for a few issues on. Vertigo doesn't bat as high for me as it did back in the day.

Ha - I think I actually have every Vertigo title on my imaginary pull list. I'm such a pseudo-intellectual slut.

It's not even current Vertigo stuff I mean, specifically -- I'm not sure what Hellblazer's up to, but most of my biggest-priority stuff (Fables, Lucifer, Y) is Vertigo ... but there was that long dark period with Animal Man having gone all weird, and Vamps, and way too many "it's like X -- but hip!" series. These days they seem to have gotten their shit together again, I just don't fully trust them yet :)

I felt the same way during Hunter when Tim turned into an "electronica" fan. Couldn't he at least have liked some current electronic music instead of Chemical Bros and Underworld?

But whatever, the character's been on a downward roll since Rieber stopped writing him. Gross was competent, everything since has been up there with the Mister E miniseries as far as accurate portrayals of the character-as-written-prior.
