Slow week for me. Looks like I'll be picking up Lenore #11 (although, I thought that came out last year? What's taking Roman Dirge so long w/this friggin' series?) and Top Shelf's Conversations #1.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And anyone know what the f the "doggy poo picture book" is? I'm intrigued... If it's this, I think that's mother f'in hilarious!

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking forward to Ex Machina, Human Target, Lucifer, and SEAGUY. I'll also get Wolverine and maybe take a look at Craig Thompson's Carnet de Voyage.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooo, yeah. Carnet de Voyage. Thompson is doing the Conversations series with the Mokey vs. Robot guy, James Kochalka.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, I really don't want to think about why Penthouse Forum is included on this list. Other than that, Carnet de Voyage will be perused. Is Kabuki any good? Or is the title the most intriguing thing about it?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Swank's on there too.
Maybe Diamond's figured out that people who read comic books are also likely to want to naked ladies from time to time.

I'm not really looking forward to Flash #212 since it's a one-off issue profiling Mirror Master, but I'll pick that up and the new Outsiders.

Huck, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What's wrong w/ the Mirror Master?

The stuff I couldn't live w/out: Ex Machina, Seaguy, Lucifer, Wonder Woman, Human Target (which I haven't read in 9 months!), Daredevil, Mary Jane. The stuff I like OK, but might skip: Outsiders, Spec Spidey, Wolverine, Adv. of Supes.

Jocelyn, your instinct re: _Kabuki_ is spot-on. Last I remember, _Kabuki_ featured a lot of preciously introspective psychobabble coupled w/ semi-plausible characters & (when David Mack is doing the art as well as the writing) pretty but numbing & exhausting collages. Our esteemed moderator (Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!) might have more to say on this topic.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And Silver Surfer, too - I haven't picked up an issue since #4, but the writing team (Chariton / Weiss) turned Le Surfer into a forboding yet benevolent alien overlord type that's abducting children for some unknown purpose - kind of a cross between Uatu the Watcher, Charlie (from Charlie's Angels) and the Smoking Man. (And if THAT doesn't sell it to you, I don't know what will!) (cough.) The story (so far) has focused on the attempts of one of the abductee's parents to learn what happened. The art (by Fables' Lan Medina) is gorgeous. Fanboys are bitching (as is their wont), but the heck with them.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh excellent, Maxx vol. 3. This week it's that, Seaguy, Lucifer, and Outsiders for me, and I'll probably grab Donald Duck while I'm at it.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I just would rather have a Flash story than a Mirror Master sorry. Despite being a life-long Flash fan, I've never really cottoned to the whole Rogue's Gallery thing, which is absurd of me. That's like saying I like the Justice League but hate team-ups or something.

Huck, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Kabuki any good? Or is the title the most intriguing thing about it?

Jocelyn -- Dave's description is pretty otm, though I have to say that vol 1 (Circle of Blood) is pretty fantastic -- perhaps not so surprising because it is, in effect, the only volume with b&w Mack art. It's the least pscyho-babbly arc, and since it's in b&w, the "Oooh all the pwetty colors!" problem of later Kabuki isn't an issue. Also looky this thread: The David Mack thread

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I.e. amazing promise of vol 1 is totally squandered away in subsequent volumes.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it true that Mack turned in vol. 1 in its entirety for his thesis, or something similar?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Sequential Tart sez: "In fact I finished Circle of Blood in college and turned it in as my senior writing thesis."
