Thanks for the link/info forks, I signed up (v. interesting that it's a uk site address...different copyright rules/restrictions? was especially pleased to see all the fawcett/captain marvel stuff, which dc shoulda released in showcase-like cheapo editions years ago...)

am particularly 'into' pre-code horror shit at the moment so def. gonna binge on some of that sweet stuff...there's just something eerie/otherworldly/ultra-compelling abt a lot those strips and their necrophiliac obsession w/ skeletons and the defilement/reanimation of corpses...gasp...choke...

Ward Fowler, Monday, 2 June 2008 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, DAMMMMMMMN, gonna dig me some Lev Gleason ultraviolence, me droogies.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 2 June 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, the Fawcett collections (WHIZ!) are absolutely killer; they also have some nice newspaper strip compilations... especially Buster Brown, which is strangely still mostly out of print. I'd snap up an Outcault archive in a heartbeat; considering how well the McCay books seem to be doing, I don't see why there's not a market for it.

Also Ward: can I assume you already got your copy of 'I Will Destroy All Civilized Planets'? Because that shit is the pinnacle of your eerie/otherworldly/compelling zeitgeist.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 2 June 2008 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

either this doesn't work in America or else they've been shut down in the last 47 minutes

Deric W. Haircare, Monday, 2 June 2008 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

okay - had to add a www at the front.

anyway - thanks for the head's up.

Garrett Martin, Monday, 2 June 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i have that terrific CIVILIZED PLANETS volume...first saw stuff by Hanks in the fifth issue of RAW - RAW also reprinted great strips by Basil Wolverton and Boody Rogers that shared a somewhat similar bizarro sensibility - tho' I do think the Hanks strips are slightly different from the Jay Disbrow/L.B. Cole etc 50s horror strips which generally have more gothicy, less sci-fiy, signifiers/tropes

Ward Fowler, Monday, 2 June 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Hanks' art and story are somehow... creepier. Always gonna be colored by that biocomic piece from the end of the same book, but his work is so thoroughly twisted and nightmarish.

Registered. Now I need some recommendations, plz!

Is there anything good for "YOU BROKE MY BRANE"-style sci-fi twistyness?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 03:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Are registrations shut, or am I doing something RONG?

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

okay i have some questions:
1) why is the page flip at the top not working? Just for me?
2) can i get a two page spread as opposed to single pages?
because if i can get those two things addressed i may disappear forever.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:26 (fourteen years ago) link

hm, page flip click works in chrome and ie. still can't figure out how to get the two page spread.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Page flip works for me in firefox - no spread though.

This is great if completely illegal. Will now disappear up Roy Thomas' ass via All-Star Squadron.

This is amazing but there are so many! Which issues of anything would you guys recommend? (There are about 50 Lois Lane for example)

Philip Nunez, Friday, 12 February 2010 22:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm mostly just looking up (generally really terrible) crap I had as a kid that has long since been purged from my collection

I have no idea what even to look for, just viewed some random early 90s Zatanna mini. Any specific recs?

Nhex, Friday, 12 February 2010 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

no American Flagg :(

reading GL: Mosaic for the first time! Gerard Jones is really good.

Flex Mentallo! But sadly no Rogan Gosh.

For some reason, I just read the Moench/Jones Batman run from the 90s (for sake of completion, I suppose). Not awful, but I'm happy I didn't spend money on it.

I've heard a lot of good things about Ostrander's Suicide Squad, so I might get started on that.

Duane Barry, Sunday, 14 February 2010 12:56 (fourteen years ago) link

The bits of Suicide Squad I've read as well as heard about are pretty awesome, though the concept reading a 65+ issue run plus crossover arcs - all through a web browser interface - is a little daunting. Give it a try though, it's quality stuff.

You guys are thinking too recent! Kubert Tor, Lou Fine Dollman and other stuff in Hit Comics, Mac Raboy Captain Marvel Jr, S&K Challengers of the Unknown...

Oh fuck me, the Dell Comics version of Krazy Kat is on there! It's unbelievably terrible.

is that dell comic based on the animated version of krazy?

not sure that herriman really needs "reconceptualising" (ugh) and besides this nov (which i've never read) kinda got there first:

Looks like this is dead, then? It's been down two days now.

Ah well, fun while it lasted I guess.

Pheeel, Friday, 30 April 2010 09:07 (fourteen years ago) link

It's been gone for two weeks now, almost. The guy has apparently been proclaiming that it'll be back "soon" after some legal stuff is sorted out. It'll never be back.

Duane Barry, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link

there's no legal defense for its existence whatsoever, no matter the caveats he put up on the page. still, was nice to have it around for a while.

Has this guy made comics of his own? I bet they would be awesome, but I didn't see any linked on his site. Just some weird new age physics koans at the bottom.

So, uh, what about Comics Should Be Good? Over the last year and a half or so they (or one poster in particular) has been posting a rather high volume of full page scans in sequence on their blog. IE: http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/category/year-of-cool-comic-moments/ and the Legends Revealed feature. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'. Seems a little infringe-y to me.

Well, because whatever happened changed him. (Dr. Superman), Friday, 4 June 2010 23:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Definitely skirting the line for fair use, but considering it took years before Scans Daily was shut down...

Nhex, Friday, 4 June 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

its an appallingly written website, that's for sure
