Yeah, I saw that. The guy claims he was homaging the cover.
This is bizarre tho:
"Harry did it with all good intentions. He thought it was an overt reference, and not an attempt to plagiarize. He thought it was a tribute," Cassanos said. "To people in the comic world, it's a recognizable image."
Really? It's not a particularly famous cover image, is it? I mean, I didn't recognize it.

True, but I'm inclined to believe the guy. Sure, it isn't Fantastic Four #1, but there are plenty of obscure artists and image to rip off if you wanted to do it deliberately. And Tales to Astonish as a general title is pretty well known.

There's a stunning, full page repro of the original Kirby/Ayers cover artwork in Mark Evanier's recent KING OF COMICS book - I'm willing to bet that's helped to 'popularise' the image

nyer covers often feature exactly this sort of homage - classic imagery updated w/contemporary details

The guy who won the contest explains how, a little snarkily: http://www.slate.com/id/2192564/

I thought it was a Kirby rip when I saw it; couldn't quite place the provenance, but the look is clearly Kirby.
