Should I buy Alan Moore's Supreme?

It's fat. It's nearly twenty quid. Is it worth the time and money? Is it better than, say, Tom Strong?

And the writing? Is it Moore in being-very-clever-but-basically-arseing-about mode, or telling-a-fantastic-emotive-story mode?

Depends how attached you are to the Superman mythos, or more particularly the Superboy one, as he's just playing around with that. It's kind of like his last Superman story, a bit, but because it isn't actually any kind of ending, and it isn't actually Supes, it doesn't have the emotional charge. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it.

Hmmm. I was always more Marvel than DC as a lad, so I don't have any affection for Superman. I'm sure I'll end up buying it at some point anyway, I just wondered if I was missing anything essential. How about "A Small Killing"? I've heard mixed reports.

I loved Supreme. It even allowed Alan to revamp an entire comic universe into something 20 times more interesting than it was before and besides there's a ton of affectionate homages for that touch of emotional/nostalgic charge. And there's some good touches of wit.

Personally I'd say both Supreme and A Small Killing would fall under "nonessential Alan Moore." Supreme's a goofy, parodic romp, but done with characteristic Moore flair; A Small Killing struck me as disappointingly contrived and predictable.

I think Supreme, both books, is/are great, but you really have to love the idea exploring and messing with the history of comics, and it helps to have been reading for a long time. Like, while you can give Watchmen to someone who's never read a comic before and they'll be able to follow it, Supreme would be a mess. Remember Crisis On Infinate Earths and all that?

I've just read the Supreme book "Story of the Year" and while it's certainly minor ALan Moore, I can definitely also say that I've never been more impressed by Rick Vietch's art. The flashback stuff is the best drawing I've ever seen him do, and not just because it shows off his amazing ability to evoke many bygone styles of comicsry. He's also able to make each of them instantly recognizable as his own style, and inject each with an equal amount of nostalgaic affection as is in Moore's script.

1 - It means the third degree is a minor third above the tonic

2 - It means I don't find it as elegant or thought provoking as some of his other works and am less likely to re-read it.
