I want to read this now, since I liked the movie so much. Anyone out there already gone through this?

HI DERE, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

DO NOT READ THE BOOK

The movie was awesome fun, but it was fun because A) it only kept a bit of the book's ridiculous over-the-top misanthropy and hipper-than-thou reader-loathing (yes the book is more "I hate my life / you hate your life" than the movie believe it or not), B) it TOTALLY IGNORED the ropey hypermeta superhero bullshit that made the book such a nice-looking slog. One of the shittier things Millar's put his name to of late, and that's saying something. I think Vic Fluro & folks were actually defending this thing, but aside from JG Jones' art (and the actually enjoyable movie they rescued from this shit book) there ain't much really worth a damn.

URGENT AND KEY

David R., Monday, 30 June 2008 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

HEY NOW

TBH I can't remember what I said about this - I have a feeling 'defending' translates as 'not hating' but certainly these days it's far from being one of my top faves. That said, the film version does seem to be losing everything that made the book even slightly unique - the fact that it chose to keep the dull misanthropy rather than the semi-interesting meta-fun speaks volumes about the conservatism of Hollywood. Not that I've seen it, but I probably will sooner or later.

So who are my 'folks'? Is that 'folks' as in TERRORISTS??!!??

Vic Fluro, Monday, 30 June 2008 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link

More like "folks" as in STRAWMEN. You'll have to forgive my spotty memory.

Of course, the Wanted discussion probably took place in a thread titled "Mom, I Just SHIPPED In My Pants, And It's Really Going Places: January 29, 2005," so I'll be damned if it'll be found

David R., Monday, 30 June 2008 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a good amount of fun nonsense where inanimate objects spell out the emotions of characters around them, possibly the best example being the firefight in the pharmacy.

HI DERE, Monday, 30 June 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought that only happened in the keyboard scene (unless you're talking about the signage in the drugstore)?

David R., Monday, 30 June 2008 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

It happened all over the place! During the drudgery of his job ("Why are you here?"), at the ATM, the drugstore, the keyboard, the bullet at the end...

HI DERE, Monday, 30 June 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

First off, thanks for the mashup there. Hadn't seen that before, but it's brilliant.

I can only really mount a half-hearted defense of Wanted (in that it involves overlooking the staggering quantity of racism/misogyny/hostility to the people reading the book and basically rewriting the entire series in my head based on a couple small points I'm not entirely convinced Millar intended), but I'm not sure I entirely buy it's the worst thing Millar has put his name on recently. I'm not sure I was able to make it all the way through one issue of The Unfunnies....

Regardless, Wanted was enough to get me to stop actively seeking out Millar books.

Ah, gotcha, Dan -- I thought you meant "spell out" literally (like in an Alpha-Bits way).

David R., Monday, 30 June 2008 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Just read this; it's a less intelligent Ellis attempt that manages to be even more misanthropic and misogynistic. So whoop-dee-do. I also found his clear unwillingness to actually "step over the line" in regards to race hysterical and telling; in a book that ends with the phrase "This is my face while I'm fucking you up the ass", he's gonna have fascist supervillain refer to an "African American" boss? Yeah, stay edgy dude.

...or would be, if the image had shown up. that's odd.

So wait, the narration boxes in that Civil War mashup/parody were yanked from here? I just assumed it was original to the guy who made it.

Oilyrags, Saturday, 5 July 2008 23:30 (sixteen years ago) link

No, that's the last two pages of Wanted.

ah, there we go (hopefully): fixed url. For...something I've already admitted is horrible. YAY

I got curious and downloaded and read this.

It's the worst, stupidest, most nihilistic, pandering, crappy, useless, probably evil and harmful thing I've ever read in my life, and I think I may be letting it off lightly. At least a literal steaming pantload has a good reason to exist.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 6 July 2008 14:11 (sixteen years ago) link

But, but, but...EDGY!

Matt M., Sunday, 6 July 2008 16:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I read "the boys" as a bookend to this; at least Ennis has some interest in the trappings of the genre that shines through.
Millar works hard not to be racist, Ennis tries desperately not to be seen as homophobic. They both come off as overgrown hardmen to me these days.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 6 July 2008 22:56 (sixteen years ago) link

i hated the comic, partly because it seemed like a really transparent movie pitch (starring eminem lol). also because it was dumb.

Jordan, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't remember reading the comic other than the part where the hero runs around in fetish gear poking people's eyes out with a filed down mighty morphin power rangers action figure but the movie is easily a million times more offensive and juvenile with its petty and fairly sincere revenge as self-actualization theme. It's total special-ops army recruitment material. BARF! Worst movie in terms of ethics since Top Gun.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:40 (sixteen years ago) link

ok lol at anyone who wanted to see an ethics lesson in this movie

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Jordan, they seriously did model the character design on Eminem!
Then Millar talked some shit about how he wanted Em in the film and Em's publicity people told him to shaddup.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

ok waht

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 21:08 (sixteen years ago) link

A rapping assassin and a drunk Kim Basinger would totally improve this movie somehow. Even throw in Insane Clown Posse, why not.

(boots photoshop)

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 21:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Wanted: not classy enough for Eminem!

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

stop it
