IF MIDTOWN IS TO BE BELIEVED (AND THEY ARE FAIRLY RELIABLE FOLKS):

BPRD: THE WARNING #1 - Which I am liking.
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #3 - Which I also quite like.

R Baez, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

ACTION COMICS #867
DETECTIVE COMICS #846
TRINITY #6
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #3
SECRET INVASION #4
YOUNG X-MEN #4

Mordy, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Based on the release dates I looked up on Marvel and DC's sites earlier this week (because I am, shock, a nerd):

Action (I wanted to catch up on the Legion story after the hype here, but I was shocked to discover that the first half of the story is sold out in every comic shop in Chicago. That must've been some popular stuff.)
Detective (Maybe. Let's see how crass the R.I.P. crossovers are.)
Final Crisis: Requiem
Secret Invasion
(Progression? Maybe? C'mon, Bendis.)
Captain Britain
Ultimate Origins
Young X-Men

Deric W. Haircare, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm going by the Savage Critic's list:

AGE OF BRONZE #27--you are all going to wake up one day and fall in love with this series
BOOSTER GOLD #1,000,000--the gag worked with #0, and I bet it works again
FINAL CRISIS: REQUIEM #1--probably the tie-in I'm least excited about, but still curious
GODDESS OF WAR #1--actually I have this already and it's kind of awesome
NEIL GAIMAN'S CORALINE TP--just because of the P. Craig Russell factor
...and maaaybe Secret Invasion.

Douglas, Monday, 7 July 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Detective, FC: WRECK BEACH, Young Liars, and probably the second Question reprint vol, if I feel the need to justify my visit to the comic shop.

Dr. Superman, Monday, 7 July 2008 22:28 (sixteen years ago) link

DETECTIVE COMICS #846 - I think this going to be a Paul Dini story featuring Hush, which I am not sure how it is going to fit into Morrison's RIP story line.

ACTION COMICS #867 - I still have 866 on the read pile, so I will probably wait until I have this one and read them both. I know it is about Brainiac and from a picture I saw in the last issue, the old green headed one is coming back.

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #19 - Pt. III of Batgirl vs. Catwoman

TRINITY #6 - I'm still game, but this thing is moving kind of slow so far. I did think it was kind of funny that #4 ended with Graak ready to pounce and Batman handled his capture off panel like it was no big deal at all. There have been a couple of little moments, but so far the thing has not gotten much traction.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #17 - I still haven't read #16. At least from #15, I'm not sure where this one is going. I will probably read the last three or four in one setting.

JOKERS ASYLUM THE PENGUIN #1 - I've got the first one, which had some interesting looking artwork. Just like Marvel pumping out all of the Iron Man and Hulk, DC is kind of doing this with the Bat and Joker stuff this summer.

FINAL CRISIS REQUIEM #1 - I'm curious, but I figure it is mostly going to be people standing around talking about how great MM is and how sad they are that he is gone until someone does a big JLA or Superman story dealing with Mars. I'm sure there will be some line by Ollie saying I'm going to get those bastards.

earlnash, Monday, 7 July 2008 23:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I think this going to be a Paul Dini story featuring Hush, which I am not sure how it is going to fit into Morrison's RIP story line.

I read (somewhere) that RIP is more "what is Gotham like with Batman out of the picture" and less primary storyline.

Mordy, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh hey thanks, Mordy. You may have just saved me some money.

Deric W. Haircare, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:57 (sixteen years ago) link

You are missing some AWESOME art from Dustin Nguyen, which is more than enough to buoy Dini's so-so-to-pretty good stories.

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 04:11 (sixteen years ago) link

BPRD, Detective, haven't decided about Trinity yet.

Seeing that Nat Turner GN on there makes me wonder what happened to Special Forces.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 12:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think it was on any kind of schedule anyway, but yeah, I'm ready for another helping.

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

comics arrived in Canada today, but comic shop closed early "due to Hellboy II"

I hate that movie already.

He was drawin' on Special Forces back in December!

Captain Britain
Invincible Iron Man
Utimate Origins
Secret Invasion
Drafted

I would probably get Age of Bronze too, but I'm not sure i want to commit to another monthly at the moment and the last time I tried buying it in floppy form my LCS didn't get another issue in for, like, ever. And I do find they're more rewarding to read in their collection form.

For someone who, in general, doesn't like Marvel books all that much, I've just noticed that I seem to be buying a hell of a lot of them. how did that happen.

ps How come you folks across the water are getting your comics a day late? Have you had a Bank Holiday (or whatever you call them in your heathen tongue)?

Stone Monkey, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Last Friday we all had a day off to celebrate the time we told you Britishes to fuck offs.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 10 July 2008 14:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Age of Bronze = more like twice- or thrice-yearly than monthly...

Douglas, Thursday, 10 July 2008 14:58 (sixteen years ago) link

BPRD THE WARNING #1 (OF 5) -- note to Big Two: THIS IS HOW YOU FLOOD THE MARKET PRIOR TO CINEMATIC HOOTIE-HOO
GOON #26 -- is it me, or did this stop being "fun" about 6-8 months ago? (bonus ?: am I just talking to myself?)

DETECTIVE COMICS #846 RIP -- more like FRAAAAAAP lol?
FINAL CRISIS REQUIEM #1 -- more like Ode To A Martian Turd lol? </carrottop>
WONDER WOMAN #22

AGE OF BRONZE #27 -- I'm saving the industry!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #565
CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI 13 #3 -- awesome; hope it sees #13
ETERNALS #2
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #3
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #3
LAST DEFENDERS #5 (OF 6)
NOVA #15
POWERS #29 -- um, yeah?
SECRET INVASION #4 -- this issue: GEE MORE TALKING I HOPE
ULTIMATE ORIGINS #2 (OF 5)
YOUNG X-MEN #4 DWS -- yeah, this isn't doing much for me

BERLIN #16 -- !!!!!!!!!!
WOLFSKIN ANNUAL #1 -- now featuring recombinant nanotech Vikings!

David R., Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Where was the Martian turd's onscreen death, by the way? Was it in Countdown?

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago) link

FINAL CRISIS #1!!!!

David R., Thursday, 10 July 2008 19:06 (sixteen years ago) link

'he's hugging it out with his family and friends from mars now...he was my favorite martian'

balls, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link

and then the comic ends w/ ghost shot of him hugging it out with his family.

balls, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Is it just me, or did anyone else notice that so little happened in Secret Invasion #4 that time actually ran backward to a moment before the event?

Mordy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Somebody spoil SI4 and Final Crisis for me please!

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:15 (sixteen years ago) link

final crisis: requiem is spoil proof unless the spoiler is 'hack dcu doesn't match up/correspond to morrison final crisis dcu'. the brief passing glance at mm's funeral in fc#2 looks even better now then it did, um, two weeks ago. half the issue is mm's death, drawn out crazy style w/ what i think is supposed to be an attempt at some ambrose bierce riff. then there's jla figures waking up and whatever at the moment it happens going 'j'onn', then some slight steps towards the search for spock, and then some stuff that's probably supposed to sound powerful but doesn't. the art is horrible.

balls, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:58 (sixteen years ago) link

si4: the skrulls were created by humanity. they rebelled. they evolved. there are many copies. and they have a plan.

balls, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:00 (sixteen years ago) link

comics arrived in Canada today, but comic shop closed early "due to Hellboy II"

And they say these people are unprofessional.

James Morrison, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Requiem was even more useless than I thought it might be. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. SERIOUSLY. Unless you want to see the director's cut of MM's death scene. Wheeeeeee.

Secret Invasion is still operating on Bendis Time. What are we, fifteen minutes into the invasion at this point? I'm seriously hard-pressed to think of anything that happened in this issue. Anything worth noting, I mean. It seemed like a scant frame from which the multitude of crossovers hang. I'm maybe gonna re-read all of the SI stuff this weekend and decide whether I shouldn't just continue reading via...less expensive means.

Is it sad that a so-so Johns comic (Action) is probably the best thing I read from this week's shipment? Yes. Yes, it is.

(But I also bought Ultramarine Corps and the first volume of Seven Soldiers, so I have some good re-reading to look forward to, at least.)

Deric W. Haircare, Friday, 11 July 2008 02:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyone want to tell me how TEC ties in with RIP? If it's the further adventures of doped-up day-glo Batman, I'm pretty much there. WHAT WILL HUSH DO?

R Baez, Friday, 11 July 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Not sure yet. Dini is good at pulling these one-shot gimmick villains out his tuchis, though. Doctor Aesop is hilarious!

Oilyrags, Friday, 11 July 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link

How's Trinity going, anyone? It looks like kind of a snooze.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's a competent snoozer -- part of me wishes it was as awful / off-the-wall as Countdown. Or, you know, actually enjoyable.

David R., Friday, 11 July 2008 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

the thing that's kept me going so far are the space-riddler's crush on Batman (none of that in #6) and the possibility that the Tarot/Trinity symbolism stuff is going somewhere. I think it's gone pretty soon, but I've said that before.

Oilyrags, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I felt compelled to browse through Countdown every week at the store, at least, and though this is, you know, "better," it doesn't really interest me.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I liked FC: Req. Martian Mahnke Lips. It's the first time the New Look looked good!
Detective RIP has a throwaway/lipservice mention of the Black Glove and, aside from the art and Dr. Aesop, is the dullest episode of DiniTec yet.
BPRD is pretty great.

Dr. Superman, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

daver otm re: trinity. i almost wish it had just been eight months of one fight and then four months of 'superman's favorite color is blue and mine is red while batman's is green. this means something.' instead of it feeling like it's been that. pretty sure this is my last week bothering to read it. last longer initially than countdown, we shall see if it's able to lure me back some months down the road.

balls, Friday, 11 July 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Action Comics was terrific this week. Gary Frank gets better with every issue.

Speaking of, when did Doug Mahnke get so rad?

Mr. Perpetua, Friday, 11 July 2008 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link

it's all about the inker with Mahnke

Dr. Superman, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I got an issue and a half into Trinity before stopping, when I realised that I probably couldn't just ignore the Nicieza stuff. Not that the Busiek/Bagley bits are alive with thrill-power but "Fabe"'s wisecracking dialogue is like licking batteries. Of course I'm still 'giving myself the option' to catch up. It's weird reading a book which seems to so intentionally aim for 'journeyman' standard though, the whole thing has this desperate aura of "don't worry fans, we can still be competent!" about it.

Groke, Saturday, 12 July 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Detective RIP has a throwaway/lipservice mention of the Black Glove and, aside from the art and Dr. Aesop, is the dullest episode of DiniTec yet.

But it's a hell of a lot more coherent than the recent Batmorrison action. I'm just wondering how this new cat/bat team-up is going to result in Batmang RIP, or what the hell it has to do with Morrison's ongoing nonsnse.

ian, Saturday, 12 July 2008 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

My guess? Probably nothing.

I have to say, though, between Dr. Aesop and The Globe (from Dini's "Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul" wrapup issue) I really wish Detective had more of that kind of weird, one-off campy villain of the week thing going. I will name my firstborn child after the first writer to bring Egghead into modern Bat-comics, without making him all dark and gritty and shit.

re. Final Crisis: Requiem - I think it's quite canny of DC to have scheduled a book which is working so well as a comfort blanket for those turned off by the death metal pacing in the main crossover. All the really positive reviews I've seen - and there have been some real hosannas - have felt the need to say "oh yes this is much better than Final Crisis itself".

Groke, Monday, 14 July 2008 13:00 (sixteen years ago) link

If the taste center of your brain is fully necrotized, is it safe to assume that other areas are affected, as well?

Deric W. Haircare, Monday, 14 July 2008 13:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Damn that Canadian Hellboy II holiday.

Here in the UK we only get Spawnmas & Wrath of Khwanzaa.

I expect Batsummer Night's Eve this week will be quite worth the trouble.

His own tastes don't enter into the equation - he's merely commenting upon the overall phenomenon.

R Baez, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Goodness me, it didn't even occur to me that Deric could think I *liked* it! Just to clear that up, it was hackneyed mourn-porn from soup to nuts.

Groke, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:58 (sixteen years ago) link

No worries, Groke. I weren't comfrused. I was just commenting on anyone who would hold Requiem up as some kind of comics gold standard in relation to the baffling dreck of FC proper.
