FINAL SAN DIEGO COMIC CON 2008

If everything goes as I think it will, this will be my last SDCC.

I'm trying to catch up on the rebooted Doctor Who before the DW panel on Thursday -- is that even possible/advisable? I just saw the third "series" premiere.

Leee, Monday, 21 July 2008 03:12 (sixteen years ago) link

That sounds... menacing, Leee!

I will be moderating six panels and giving a lecture. I am insane.

Douglas, Monday, 21 July 2008 04:07 (sixteen years ago) link

All goes according to plan = if I am not seduced by Hollywood starpower, fanboy nation, and booth babes, I will be done w/ conventions.

Your lecture is the panel on canonicity, right? That is one I'm making sure to attend.

Leee, Monday, 21 July 2008 05:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I am not on a panel, nor do I have a table. I will be, as they say, adrift.

Matt M., Monday, 21 July 2008 05:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Kieron Gillen just mentioned something about there being a Spaced panel? Though I'm not sure how much that means to Americans.

Trying to get through it all by thursday would be a bit much! Choice eps from series 3 and 4: Gridlock, Human Nature/Family of Blood, Blink, Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords, Planet of the Ood, The Unicorn and the Wasp, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Midnight, Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journeys' End.

Apparently there's some support out there for moving CCI to Las Vegas. What does an ILC'er think of such a move? Personally, it would make me interested in going again. (I went in '92 and '94.)

Rock Hardy, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

how many people go to this convention?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link

All of them.

Douglas, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Seriously, I believe it's something like 125,000.

Douglas, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Chap's Doctor Who choices OTM. But if you're pressed for time, just go for:

Season 3--
Human Nature/Family of Blood
Blink

Season 4--
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journeys' End

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago) link

San Diego convention center is *bigger* than Vegas', last time I checked. I welcome corrections.

But then SDCC is currently a Leviathan, bigger than big. Some would say too big, and maybe they're right. Douglas' figure is the one widely quoted for attendance overall and I don't debate it. SDCC organizers have said they've made the aisles wider for this year's show, which means fewer exhibitors. I guess we'll see when we get there.

Being as the last comics show I went to was San Jose Super-Con with something like a fifth of that in attendance, my brain's likely to explode the moment I walk through the door.

Matt M., Monday, 21 July 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't recommend Stolen Earth/Journey's End in that line-up, because so much of the appeal of that is the whole Davies Run Concludes!! thing, and relies on the viewer having seen all the other episodes. Swap those two for Midnight, a good standalone.

Nhex, Monday, 21 July 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

SE/JE is worth watching for a)Davros and b) the audaciousness of THAT cliffhanger.

chap, Monday, 21 July 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

But yeah, Midnight is better, and arguably RTD's best script for the show ever.

chap, Monday, 21 July 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

leee, are you trying to be cool in 2009?

Jordan, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Jordan, that will never happen. I'm just at THAT AGE where comics no longer do it for me.

Oi! You forgot "The Shakespeare Code"! Are those all arc-eps, or did you list some standalones in there?

I'm estimating that I have 15 non-working, non-driving, non-water-based hours with a normal amount of sleep, which works out to 20 episodes worth of time, and the DW panel doesn't start till noon Thursday. Plenty of time, nothing could possibly go wrong.

Leee, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

From the last season you should watch "The Fires Of Pompeii" instead of "Planet Of The Ood" - much more fun, far better intro to Donna-as-regular-companion, just as emotionally satisfying and as important to the 'arc' too. I think it was my favourite all year actually.

But watch both! In fact the only really duff episode this year was "The Doctor's Daughter".

Groke, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Too much Time Lord...

Leee, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 06:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I liked The Doctor's Daughter! Reminded me of a rubbish McCoy episode in, er, a good way. Ok, maybe not.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 14:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I hate to ask, but if anyone going to Comicon can swing by Darwyn Cooke's booth and buy a copy of his artbook, I'd be eternally grateful. I can Paypal money for the book (assuming it's going to be in the neighborhood of $30 like boothmate Cameron Stewart's), shipping and a bit extra for a couple of drinks or what have you- send me an email if this sounds acceptable.

Had a totally great time. And won an Eisner! Which was presented to me by Jane Wiedlin, surrounded by Stormtroopers!

Congrats, Douglas!

Rock Hardy, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Congratulations! Did Wiedlin and the Stormtroopers engage in typical award show banter before announcing the winner?

Garrett Martin, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Congrats, Douglas, you old sellout you.

David R., Monday, 28 July 2008 13:45 (sixteen years ago) link

The Stormtroopers just stomped in unison.

Douglas, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Congrats, Douglas!

R Baez, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh man, I didn't even know you were that Douglas; only recently hopped the fence from ILM to start posting here. Congratulations!

Telephone thing, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Congrats, Douglas! Who was also the only ILC person I saw at the show, and even then, only at the blogging panel. I gotta get out more...

Matt M., Tuesday, 29 July 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Congrats, Douglas! Also late: RC was blurbed in the Globe & Mail last week (or two weeks ago? The Globe book section of however long ago is in the staff bathroom at work and I just read it--which also tells you that I just did something else).

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 05:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Congrats, Douglas!. And now I finally get to read it! (it arrived yesterday).
