Wherein the ILC braintrust can pitch fits or proffer kudos regarding this "event".

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Green Arrow.

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I can offer nothing. Nothing. Not interested in the slightest, though I guess a lot of other people are up in arms about it.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Green Arrow is wicked cool.

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It takes more than this to get me interested in the DCU proper. Grant Morrison, for example.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that Marvel came out with that silly little "Identity Disc" mini-series at the same time. It seemed so half-hearted that they must have been doing it for laughs.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Richard Meltzer writing superheroes? How can you miss this? Full of great little roman a clef nods to Meltzer's time hanging hanging out with Blue Oyster Cult (seen in Identity Crisis as "Satellite Era Leagüe") and getting drunk with Lester Bangs and Nick Tosches ("Wonder Woman" and "Aquaman", respectively) and the time he went to a part at Handsome Dick Manitoba's ("the Atom") house and peed on Shannon Tweed ("Starro the Conqueror").

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If you all think I'm actually going to post something that's about the actual series after Huck, you're bonkers.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry.

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I'm just yanking chains, Huckle.

I'm liking the series so far, though it's a strange like - the story gains a lot of its strength and momentum off the 40+/50+ year backstory of all these characters (as much for the emotional resonance re: Sue Dinby's tragedies as the actual plot machinations), yet Meltzer's been vocal in his aim to "reclaim" this history & these characters and refashion it so as to divorce these things from their quaint, naive origins, and that rankles me a bit.

Not because these characters shouldn't be or can't be "updated" in this way, but because trying to recast these stories from a different generation to belong to the current generation (and, in essence, rewriting history) is a back-handed way of saying that what came before wasn't good enough to work today - instead of working w/ the lemons, they done gone out & bought Coke. That's 50 types of bullshit, of course, because these characters wouldn't even exist right now were it not for what came prior. But, then, this is the same argument that continuity-phreaks trot out when bitching about revamps & retconns & all sorts of things (for instance, all the hubbub re: Mark Waid's _Superman: Birthright_ mini-series now being THE ORIGIN for Superman), so I'll abstain from flogging this poor horse any more.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen Meltzer say something along the lines that he was trying to make "old stories you didn't think worked anymore" fit in with the contemporary stuff. Sort of reconciling that carefree past with the stuff now.

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Reconciliation of 50 years' worth of disparate history THAT WASN'T MEANT TO BE RECONCILED is the bane of the continuity-beholden fantasticator. The fact that Crisis begat more boondoggles than it fixed is proof of that. And, also, if John Byrne can expunge the Vertigo Doom Patrol from the annals of DC lore, then Brad Meltzer can let crazy Dr. Light and meek Dr. Light co-exist w/out involving brainwashing and rape. I don't have a problem w/ the story in IC @ all - I have a problem with that "Remaking The Silver Age FOR YOU" mindset (in case I haven't belabored my point enough). But I reserve the right to revert to Continuity Cal at a moment's notice.

Of course, it goes w/out saying that I hope this reconciliation of Silver Age poofery w/ "serious" modern-age storytelling involves Black Lois Lane.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course today, she would be Islamic Lois.

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU FOOLS!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Disregarding the supposed rape controversy, I just find the comic itself impossible too read -- to many written panels, not sure what direction the frames are going, duff dialogue... etc.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

But dontcha want to see Deathstroke kick ass on Kyle Rayner????

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yeah.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

But I won't enjoy it.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm lovin it!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I always loved that old Suicide Squad issue about Dr Light and the Devil. An aside, though: this series seems to pretty much ignore the JLI era, which is weird to me at least, as that's the only place I'd encountered EM before.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of the JLI era, I recently reread the New Beginnings trade (or rather READ it, since I had all the issues as they came out) and realized how strongly my sense of humour was shaped by it. Or maybe it just ran parallel to it.

Huck, Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only (sadly?) add "ditto."

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still waiting for my "ONE PUNCH!" moment.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure why, but of all comics JLI seems to stand out as a common-bond-sorta experience between those who read it at the time

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it was really good?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You may be on to something...

Huck, Friday, 30 July 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting confluence: Keith Giffen (currently working on a JLI-like series for another publisher) said in interviews he's "done" with DC for what happened w/ Sue Dinby.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

That's too bad. I think that it's pretty evident that Giffen really loved the characters he was writing on JL/I/A/E, but I hope he can get over it. I think in the wake of the giant success of IC, we'll need another antidotally light look at the DC superheroes, like Giffen's JL was post-DKR.

Huck, Friday, 30 July 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it was really good?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That was a long piece of text after that last answer that disappeared -- never mind.

Anyway, I'm still reserving judgment on IC... I'm not impressed so far, it's kinda sub-Boccho superhero stuff, tasteless enough to be uncomfortable, not tasteless enough to be fun.

one month passes...
OK, I have the first four as cbr files currently awaiting reading, and having heard today's rumour I think I need to read them pretty damn quickly.

You guys have all read Lying In The Gutters, yes?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 27 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The new one? No, but will do so postehaste.
The new Flash is an Identity Crisis tie-in, and, I think, the best Identity Crisis issue yet!

Huk-L, Monday, 27 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah! Both the "rumours" reported in there are off-base.
You can't introduce the killer after four issues and in another title, with a different writer. That's just dirty pool.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, it seems plausible. Plus this issue of Flash, and all the ones until IC is over, being tagged as IC crossovers may well be a major pointer. This may have made initial sense given the speculation about it being Captain Cold, but in an unintentional spoiler he appears with the rest of the Rogues on the cover of the Flash in the latest Previews in a way which doesn't imply it's him (particularly since it takes place after IC finishes).

I'm very curious as to the content of this Barry Allen letter though.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the Flash standing up! The part where Captain Cold sends flowers to Dibny was really cool!
I think the whole mystery has to come back to the Calculator and the opening IC scene with Bolt and the LexCorp battlesuit.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Newsarama does an IC post-mortem w/ Brad Meltzer here.

i've read the first four issues but can't find 5-7. assume they'll be reprinted? #7 at least. could also search other stores.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Ian, the rest of the reprints will be out over the next few weeks.

" I thought I'd knit this nice little sweater. It was after the fact that Dan turned it into this wonderful quilt."

what a way with words

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

You can tell he's a writer.

Ma Meltzer-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Yes, a wonderful neck-breaking nano-teching Big-Brothering galactic-warring assassin-fucking Spectre-smiting Batman-throttling Zatanna-harping Flash-killing quilt.

OMG they cancelled Plastic Man because he's gonna get THE FINGER!

BTW, I can't see that pic yet - I'm guessing it's the Kyle Baker Batman thing, tho?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

No, it's the one where Plas is shaking his fist and looking like a macho superhero: "Someone knows all my secrets and is striking at me through those closest to me! Well, this time someone has gone too far!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Note the rare use of the comma in superhero comics.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Clearly the writing is bad, in the sense that Metzger [sic] felt the impulse to show off his chops through over-narrated captions.

And I hereby introduce the motion to proclaim "Rags" a suck.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

*sad IDENTITY CRISIS face*

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Did Mad Magazine ever do an Idiot Crisis?
If not, I think I have GOLDEN pitch for them.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

is it really the case that the most prominent killed character in this "event" was The Elongated Man's wife? I can imagine a lot of fans being very upset by her demise.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I was upset - she was nice and it spoils a good character.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

She'll be back, with Hitler's brane probably.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

They also killed Robin's dad, arguably more prominent because of his proximity to a character who occasionally appears on Slurpee cups.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

They also killed CAPTAIN BOOMERANG!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Who lived in a Slurpee Cup during the lean years between THE TRIAL OF THE FLASH and Suicide Squad.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

More Identity Crisis back-pattery, although this one, it's worth pointing out, was written by Russell Lissau, who scripted a pretty alreet story in the recent Batman Allies: Secret Files & Origins.

R Baez, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

I like how in the latest All New Atom, when they talk about Jean Loring, they show her as Eclipso, as if Eclipso killed Sue Dibny, as if Identiy Crisis has already been retconned ala Parallax.
