I am completely twee-d out - the James Kochalka C/D, S/D, knock yerself out thread

In a moment of weakness (and to make up for never having bought the individual Sketchbook Diaries) I bought the Complete Sketchbook Diaries by James Kochalka and read it a year a night. As as result, I don't think I can ever read anything twee again and have a curious obsession with peeing. But I'll still buy the next thing he publishes - Starfucker, I think?

What's everybody elses opinion on Kochalka? Go on, you know you've got one.

Pinky & Stinky was boringly twee.

The only other thing I've read is his short "Krishna's Girlfriend," which was hilarious.

You kinda have to get into his meandering sense of plot to enjoy some of the books, like Pinky & Stinky. And be really twee. I'd suggest avoiding that and that "Magic Butterflies" book and exploring pretty much anything else (start with "Quit Your Job" maybe). It's not really all that like the Sketchbook Diaries, which are jaw-droppingly great, but they're pretty durn good.

Also his music is pretty great. "Kitty In A Coma" is a killer song.

I got into Kochalka through his music - actually, that's not strictly true. My friends Rich & Andy are the James Kochalka Puppet Theatre, which is an excuse for them to beat each other up with increasingly bigger cardboard puppets to "Monkey vs Robot" (although they've also done "Bad Astronaut" and "Put Down The Gun") and I bought the MvR CD as a result, before adding "Don't Trust Whitey" and "Carrot Boy" as soon as I saw them.

As you'd expect, much like his comics, he veers wildly between twee-as-fuck to semi-pornographic and back again.

Songs:

S: Monkey vs Robot, Bad Astronaut, Michael Jackson, Punch The Clock, Carrot Boy Theme, Frog On Top Of A Skyscraper, Bat Man Bud Light, Hockey Monkey

D: Virtually nothing, but some of the uber-twee stuff like Amthsterdam and Little Robot Lost In Space doesn't need more than a handful of listens ever.

Books:

S: Fancy Froglin, Sketchbook Diaries, Quit Your Job, Monkey vs Robot, Pinky & Stinky

D: Peanut Butter & Jeremy, Magic Boy

Genuinely love the Sketchbook Diaries. Can't get into the rest of his stuff.

He's the greatest! I love his music.

Search:

Quit Your Job; Tiny Bubbles; and Kissers (comes with a CD! featuring the classic "Have You Ever Kissed An Idiot?")

Also, look out for Monica's Story which he collaborated on, about the Monica Lewinsky affair!

i loved him for a v. long time, thot the sketchbook diaries were genius, bought the big one, and was deeply disappointing, he has become bill keane for hipsters, a sort of isnt it sweet, dont you want this too, heteronormative kind of guy

anthony, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but bil keane is the bil keane for hipsters!!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 23 August 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Heteronormative"?! Do you hate it when straight people are happy?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(That Conversations dealy with Craig Thompson is pretty funny, if heavy on metaphysics and philosonoodling.)

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

its not that, its almost like he thinks b/c it worked for him it will work for anyone

anthony, Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you just frustrated that it isn't working for you?
