Escapo!

I feel like starting a new thread on a grey day. Has anyone else read this(part of THB) or other Paul Pope works? I read a few pages last night before conking out and the artwork seems very nice, bold, and abstract.
But the horrily meta-the "I'm reinventing comics and giving them worth again" introduction was very pretentious, and too much too handle before actually getting to the comic. Does hype bother anyone else or am I being oversensitive? I'm all about escape artists though, and I like the skeleton costume. I think it's down to my brother's and my childhood love of Houdini.

Does this compare to Chabon's Escapist? (which I haven't read, since it's way overpriced, esp. in Canada)

It's not very similar to The Escapist character in tone/style. I haven't read the comic either due to price, only Kavalier & Clay.

Haven't read it. Hype doesn't bother me per se, but the "I'm reinventing comics" people always strike me as the allies of the "it's pretty good, for a comic book!" people, or the guys who stopped reading comics except for the ones they flip through with ironic detachment, or the one or two approved by the local alternative weekly.

Dickheads, is what I'm getting at.

And the reinventors often end up being guys who haven't actually read enough comics to be sure they're doing something new.

So that would put me off, but the comic might still be good.

The Escapist isn't really worth it, I don't think -- it's almost more like a novelty merchandising prop than it is a comic you'd read on its own merits.

_100%_ (the last mini PP did for Vertigo) (grounded futuristic sci-fi) was quite good.

Most of Mr. Pope's work is very pretty but outrageously priced. ESCAPO is no exception. I picked it up remainder for something like six bucks and felt like I wasn't ripped off. And if you read an introduction written by the author of the work he's introducing, you have only yourself to blame.

And I remember back when Mr. Pope was another indy kid in the indy ghetto at the SDCC. I think we talked about how cool Happy Nightmare Baby by Opal was.

Heavy Liquid was pretty huh huh dope. His faces are beautifully ugly.

Once Pope moved to DC, he toned down the egomaniacal front notes. He hasn't really innovated anything, except for attempting to place "cool" over "nerdy" in the comix equation. And just like his idol Nick Cave, comes off as a little bit stupid in the process. Fun, though.
