Oh, the humanity!

The latest Batman ubercrossover starts this week, and for half a quarter, I might sneak a peek. Also, it's Marvel's Ultimate week, as THREE Ultimate titles hit, including the first issue of _Ultimate Nightmare_, the Warren Ellis mini with the worst title this side of _Identity Disc_. And Queen & Country, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 August 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh - you might notice that Batman / Catwoman 2-issue Prestige Format-priced mini. It's written by Ann Nocenti, who folks might remember as "the OTHER writer, besides Miller & Bendis, that didn't punt Dardevil", w/ art by Green Lantern murder accomplice Ethan Van Sciver.

Someone else can talk up the other indie stuff (I hope).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 August 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I know, I should get on the Ellis hammer so I don't miss this stuff, but: what the hell's Ultimate Nightmare?

Girlfriend's out of town last half of this week, and I don't drive, so probably won't get comics until next week, but maybe I'll convince her to make a trip Wednesday if I get caught up on work.

Anyone reading Firestorm?

Swamp Thing's in my grab, and Y (already?), and I'm curious about X-Men The End ...

(re: Nocenti, she's also responsible for Bullet and lots of other lame Daredevil villains ... but was Typhoid Mary hers, too? I haven't read any of that era of Daredevil since it first came out)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Typhoid is hers, yep. What I remember from her DD run = TM, & DD having Mephisto in his grill (w/ Blackguard, Mephisto's son, which, yeah, registers a reading on the Mort-O-Meter).

Tep, I skimmed a preview of X-Men: The End somewhere (@ MileHighComics.com?) (yep), & it looked rather drab - from what I can gather, lots of focus on the Sh'iar & the Destiny Diaries (w00). AND, for your perusing pleasure, the captions from the first page:

"There are a LOT of ways to tell a story. The BEST stars with a girl. And a PROPHECY. (In stories like this, there's ALWAYS a prophecy.) She didn't much CARE about that, really. Her name was ALIYAH BISHOP, after her paternal grandmother. What she CARED about, all she wanted out of life, was to find the FATHER she'd never seen. Such a SIMPLE dream...to have such FINAL consequences."

18 issues of this. Bring on the No-Doz.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It (Nocenti's DD) seemed like one of those runs that was either rushed or compromised somehow, like Priest's Deadpool. The good moments shined, the bad moments just made you scratch your head and wonder how on Earth they happened.

Oh geez, X-Men: The End sounds like a real dog now. Is that Claremont? (I've now followed the link and YES. Well Jesus.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! And to answer your Ultimate Nightmare question, Tep - um...actually, I really can't answer it as to what actually HAPPENS in the mini. But it's an Ultimate Event, and it's got snazzy art by Trevor Hairsine, and if his first 3 issues of UFF are any indication, UN will, as they say, "rock".

BTW, Tep, have you read the last issue of USM (#62) yet?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If #62 is the one where that THING happens vis-a-vis YOU KNOW WHO, then the answer is HOLY CRAP YES I HAVE.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wish YOU KNOW WHO didn't actually YOU KNOW WHAT - yeah, the Ulimate title's supposed to mirror the "real" Spidey, so if stuff happened there, it happens here, but, man, it's not like there was any good reason for YOU KNOW WHO to YOU KNOW WHAT except to put a check in the box next to YOU KNOW, even though the YOU KNOW WHAT was effectively done - I saw it coming (and the hints are dropped, if you're the cynical sort & are looking for these sorts of things), and I guess the reason for YOU KNOW WHAT is as an example of "you never know" (the randomness of it all) but, still, geez. The fact that it took 3 (?) pages for YOU KNOW WHAT was excrutiating. Kudos, Bendis, you YOU KNOW WHAT.

Off-topic: comparing Ultimate Carnage (yeesh) to the actual thing swinging around in the _Venom Vs. Carnage_ mini (which, yes, I bought #1 of, because of Peter Milligan) does the "real" version no favors AT ALL, so kudos to Bendis in that regard as well. You YOU KNOW WHAT.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU KNOW WHO and THAT OTHER PERSON had some great moments in #62, though, which I thought was good even if it was part of the hint dropping. And I think, given the fact that there's been a "subplot" of sorts lately about Peter & MJ dealing with the stress of him being a superhero, and all the consequences of that ... I think this could dovetail into that really strongly. The nice thing about Bendis on this book is that some of his strongest writing is the stuff that's got more to do with Peter being a teenager than with him being a superhero, without it going all Buffy and everything.

And yeah, holy crap, Ultimate Carnage is a hell of a lot better (I was going to say "cooler," but Original Carnage is so tied into that 90s comics obsession with a certain kind of "cool," hello TRENCHCOAT AVENGERS). I can't wait until Ultimate Kaine shows up!

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 2 August 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Eighteen issues of X-Men: The End? Great googly moogly that'll be a lot of not good.

Light week for me, SWAMP THING, HARD TIME, SCRATCH look like the only floppies. Maybe I'll get some more of Grant Morrison's JLA run in trades, anticipating his upcoming return.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 2 August 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG dood don't spoil the TRENCHCOAT AVENGERS for everyone!

Hey, that's right, BMB is doing Ultimate Kaine, isn't he? AND I THINK I KNOW HOW! (?) Or I'm full of it. (Oh, lordy, I hope it ain't Geldolf.)

Funny you mention Bendis' strengths w/ the teen dramedy - when I first heard about USM, my thoughts were along the lines of most critics (cf. "what the hell a MODERN Spider-Man?"), and the free comic that came out circa the first Spidey flick didn't do a damn thing for me (stupid Jemas), but the guy @ my shop talked it (& Bendis) up a lot, so I gave it a shot. The issue that sold me = #13, where MJ & Peter hook up. The entire sequence (especially the letter) gave me a warm, fuzzy, non-pervy feeling. Bendis' dialogue tendencies also dovetail nicely w/ writing awkward high school kids, too, and USM is a perfect example of it. Actually, it's probably the only current example of this in Bendis' current workload.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 August 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, he IS doing Ultimate Kaine? I was totally kidding! Or maybe I'd heard it, blocked it out, and regurgitated it thinking I was kidding.

I used #13 to get my ex onto the title, too :)

It's interesting, actually, that Bendis hasn't become the Guy Who Writes Teens of comics, like Kevin Williamson for TV/movies before he burned out, or Joss Whedon in a different way. Granted, he's done some here and there outside of Spidey, but it's never even threatened to be his focus -- even his arc on Ultimate FF removed the characters far enough outside the normal teen experience, and used extraordinary enough teenagers, that I'm not sure it counts.

He should totally do Ultimate Fallen Angels.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Light week for me. I think all my titles come out at the same time. It's a special "Fuck-Huck" week. Since I'm really starting to think I spend too much money.
I didn't realize Justice League Elite was going to be biweekly. I'm not sure if it's any good yet, so I guess I'll buy #2, if it's still there when I go in 10 days or so.

Huck, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX ate my big post, so here's a summary:

X-Men: The End = ugh

Batman = I'll probably get the cheapo issue, but I can't see myself reading the big crossover dingus

Runaways = the penultimate issue comes out this week, and it's actually building toward a real ending!

Other than that, Y, Swamp Thing, Hard Time, Scratch, maybe some more Miller Daredevil or a start on Lone Wold & Cub if I'm feeling spendy.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I would totally pony up for the excessive Batcross if the Powers That DC referred to it as a "crossover dingus". As it stands, I'm already getting 2 of the titles involved (Catwoman & Birds of Prey) on a regular basis, and I might try out Bats' actual title (since Fables guru Bill Willingham is on it for the duration of the xxx-over), but I'll be damned if issues of Gotham Knights & Tales of the DK are getting in my house anytime soon.

Firestorm I haven't tried, as I need to draw lines somewhere, and I'm miffed the original writer supposedly lined up for this project (MIKE CAREY!) was denied.

Huck, how's JLElite? I need to read more gritty "realistic" superheroe stories like I need more "bad girl" stories.

And Tep! (& others), if you're looking for some teenagey super-hero type stories, the man you want to acquaint yourself w/ is Sean McKeever. He wrote the (cancelled) Sentinel series (about a boy & his robot) (recently collected in manga-sized TPs) and the (soon to be cancelled after only four issues!, according to rumours) (LAME AND STUPID MARVEL LAME AND STUPID!) Mary Jane series (about the Spidey cast as modern teens in high school).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

since Fables guru Bill Willingham is on it for the duration of the xxx-over

Oh, is that so? I've been getting the main Battitle anyway, and if he's on it I'll definitely keep up. That last arc with Judd Winnick was actually one of the best for awhile up until that last issue, with its needless supervillain building and "The Ghost of Jason Todd, Whoooooo!"

Willingham's 'Thessaly' mini-series was really great btw, and I wasn't even familiar with the character from Sandman.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

David, JLElite is basically DC's Authority, right down the realistic bad girl gritty superhero team leader.
The art, by Doug Mahnke is great, as expected.
I'm really not sure about the story yet, however.

Huck, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

David R OTM, Mary Jane is really good and quite why Marvel are cancelling it already I have no idea.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, y'know that BW is also the Robin writer as well, yes? I've heard mixed reports about his work over there, but the current artist (Damion Scott) is FANTASTIC - a mix of Ditko / Kane awkward grace & _Gen X_-era Bachalo softness.

x-post to Aldo: I could understand if MJ was dogging after a year or so of sales, but for only FOUR ISSUES? McKeever is an unlucky guy - first Sentinel, then MJ, and also I guess Mystique (also a good read if you're looking for fun shape-shifting espionage) is at cancellation-level sales; supposedly, the last issue of Mystique sold WORSE than Thanos, a series (mercifully?) sent to the chopping block.

Aldo, did you get your info from somewhere that wasn't _Lying in the Gutters_?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I read Rich Johnson too. :-/ He is usually pretty reliable though, I suspect he's right here.

Far too early though - does this mean Marvel are reconsidering their all-ages line? I can't imagine sales are going that well...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect there's a reason other than sales for MJ's cancellation. They couldn't have expected it to break-out or even necessarily find an audience right out of the gate.

Huck, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

How quickly can they make a determination, though? They're not going to sell crap thru the Direct Market, single-issue wise; I imagine most of the All-Ages sales are going to come via the TP market (via WalMart, Borders, Waldenbooks, etc etc etc). I would think that a title like _Mary Jane_ (featuring a readily identifiable teenage female character as the lead) would be a GREAT seller to folks not into books tainted w/ the superhero stuff, but cutting ties before they even publish enough issues to throw together a TP that'll actually make Marvel the $$$ they want makes little sense.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(also a good read if you're looking for fun shape-shifting espionage)

This sounds a lot like Alias the tv show.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

re: Mystique

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Finger to nose means you're right! Except Mystique's sidekick is 6 inches tall. And her boss is Professor X (in astral projection mode).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys... HOW COME NONE OF YOU TOLD ME THE FURY IS IN THIS ISSUE OF X-MEN!!!! WTF!!!1!!OMG!!!!!11!!!

It seems a more powerful Fury than it ever was in Captain Britain as well...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 6 August 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a sec - I thought the CB Fury was a KILLING MACHINE! This thing (from what I've read) is kinda blah in terms of ferocity & fulfilling its previous MO.

Regardless, I've been avoiding the Claremont's Uncanny X-Men the Third based on what he's been doing as of late. Is it worth checking out?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 6 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Random (SPOILER) thoughts about this weeks issues, which I read last night:

Y - It seems like it might be picking up some steam soon, but even aside from that I think this is the best issue in awhile. It's funny and doesn't seem forced. Whichever ILCer pointed out Vaughan's tendency to insert "Did you know..." style facts in his stories is OTM though, gah.

Runaways - Sort of the opposite of Y in that there's only one issue left now, so stuff is happening! People die! It's great!

Swamp Thing - I thought everything from the last issue was wrapped up a little too tidily and back-to-status-quo, so this issue was a pleasant surprise. I dig this even though I never really read the old series, and the art is great.

Batman, the 12 cent adventure - meh, I never really kept up or cared about all the Robins and support cast that it seems this cross-over will be about.

I thought I bought the most recent Eightball, but the guy at the register neither charged me for it or put it in my bag. Perhaps he was trying to make a statement about indie comics?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, Dave, you've got me reading a teenage high school spandex melodrama now.

(Is Mystique traded yet?)

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, Leeee, which one?

(_Mystique_ was supposed to be traded manga-stylee w/ the other "Tsunami" titles it debuted with, but I don't think it has been just yet.) (NOTE: All the Tsunami titles I can think of, except for _Mystique_, have been shitcanned.) (For completists, the list includes Namor, Venom, Inhumans [Sean McKeever donged AGAIN!], Human Torch, Runaways [boo hiss f*ckers], and for giggles I'll include the Andi Watson manga title that never even had an issue released, for whatever reason.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They say Runaways may come back after an 'extented hiatus', whatever the point of that is. I'm just glad Marvel let them wrap up the storyline.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(that's what you read, isn't it "Tony"!)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Plow sez: "It's Mary Jane, suckaz!"

Also, anyone else read that last Adventures of Sperman [sic]? The whole Daffy Duck vs. the Pencil meta thing, and it's hi-larious.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)
