The Center for Cartoon Studies

So check it: I hear about this Comic School that's going to be opening up in my town. The Center for Cartoon Studies is going to open in the Fall of 2005. In White River Jct VERMONT. How weird is that? They're teaching all kinds of cool-ass classes and getting all sorts of famous artists/writers to visit. So I'm thinking, "Hey, I want to take a couple classes. I like comics and I wouldn't mind learning how to make them. You know, for a bit of fun or whatever." Too bad it costs $14,000 per year. I guess only serious people need apply. I'll just be standing outside the window, with my nose pressed to the glass.

Oh yeah, so if any of you all end up going, you can share my 3 bedroom apartment. Only gorgeous men need apply.

Maybe they'll have evening courses and workshops and stuff?

I hope so, but I don't think so. Maybe everyone'll be too busy w/the REAL students and all.

I'm betting it's Vermont because so many of those guys live nearby (I'm assuming McCloud, Bissette, and Kitchen still live in Mass, so that's at least three members of the advisory board who are a short drive away), and the state's got a better tax situation than Massachusetts.

You can always show up at lectures without being a student -- people usually don't have a problem with that (and in some cases can't do anything about it even if they do).

(As much as the idea is cool, I suspect their interest is with real customers, not real students -- they don't appear to be a degree-granting or accredited institution, which means they have to cater either to people with full-time jobs or kids with well-off parents/spouses.)

Is the Kubert school degree-granting?

Huck, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly, there's no mention of degrees (it's a 3 year institution, which is too long for a traditional Associate's degree and too short for a Bachelor's), but they do say they're accredited and an eligible institution for student loans -- I didn't think you could get a loan without being in a degree program, but that may only be for graduate school.

U. of Chicago has a brand spanking new "graphic novel" workshop this year. If "graphic novels" are anything like comics, then I'm stoked.

They're different: they're much more pleased with themselves, rarely with any justification.

Ouch, Martin! I'm stinging from that comment, and I didn't even get touched!
