But don't take my word for it. See for yourself.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

For the life of me I can't help but think it looks like Dick Tracy. I want to like it, but I'm worried...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Given that Frank Miller's heavily involved (and the cast!), I don't think there's anything to worry about, unless you have a crippling hatred of all things _Sin City_.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that seriously Mickey Rourke as Marv? He looks LIKE MARV! I realize he's in profile and black and white, but that still could be taken straight from Miller's notepad.

The cast list is so ridiculous in its "wait, I know that guy too"-ness that it feels like it should end with "J/K" or something. Or at least have a winky after each of them. It's not that they're all A-listers, it's just the overwhelming quantity of B-listers. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Sin City.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What about if you liked the first Sin City but think it's gone downhill towards All Ninja Hookers All The Time since? I thought this was the default opinion.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whoooaaaaa!!!!!!!!

I didn't really like the trade that I got but this looks awesome!

Is the film going to be black and white (with the occational splash of red)? That's awesome!

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, my feelings towards _Sin City_ the book border on apathetic, yet I am, as they say on the TV, totally stoked for this bitchin' piece of cinema.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That does look really cool. I read the first trade and really liked it, but never read any more because of all the bad things I've heard. However, that was before I knew there were NINJA HOOKERS.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have nothing but love for the first few Sin City novels. The stills show me that they're trying very hard to make it look like the books instead of settling for a cinematic look that evokes the books (and would work a lot better, IMNSHO). Maybe it'll be GREAT, but those stills don't do it for me.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

But, Matt, dare I ask WWDD? Or S, actually.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Given that Frank Miller's heavily involved (and the cast!), I don't think there's anything to worry about

er...

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I forget to mention that this thread is for Unyielding Optimism, damn it?!?!?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this level of obscene stylisation can only help.

Vic Fluro, Friday, 10 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dormammu would raze the set to the ground, or ask for a walk-on.

Unyielding Optimism threads should be labeled as such to prevent the very heartbreak we're experiencing right now.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh - and in case and of you are wondering what the hell this Dormammu stuff is about, please allow me to pimp for Matt & his noble WWDD endeavor.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Your check is in the mail, kind sir.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a little worried for Hollywood, because with the massive casts in both this and Scorsese's Howard Hughes movie, I assume every other movie next year is going to have to star Mindy Cohn and Parker Stevenson.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Have y'all seen the footage? I had not registered that it is going to be directed (okay, co-directed) by Robert Rodriguez, which along with the excellent casting gives me hope for the film.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Frank Miller's getting directing credits too!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Elijah Wood .... Kevin

!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Why this movie will be awesome: Weeval is in it!!

Why this movie might not be awesome: if it actually uses panels from the comic.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ROSARIO DAWSON IS IN THIS

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have yet to see a movie with Rosario Dawson in it that I haven't enjoyed.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like Sidewalks of New York, but I blame Ed Burns for that, not Ms Dawson. I hope this means Josie and the Pussycats have all become Sin City streetwalkers.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Holy fuck!

This actually looks great, and I don't rate the Sin City's after the first one, no way no how.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(as I said in my first post. Bah.)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

new trailer up - still looks great!!

dave k, Saturday, 12 March 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This one?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 12 March 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this "guest director Quentin Tarantino" thing? What ever happened with the "the DGA won't allow Rodriguez and Miller to both be listed as director" dilemma? (I assume the answers to these two questions are related.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 March 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that's the one... maybe tarantino directed one of the really short segments (eg the one with hartnett?)

dave k, Saturday, 12 March 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the Hartnett segment was what Rodriguez did on his own dime and time (before Sin City: The Movie was anything more than wishful thinking) that he later used to convince Miller into allowing him to filmify it.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 12 March 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

DGA dilemma was resolved by Rodriguez resigning from the DGA.

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 13 March 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

From IMDB:

Robert Rodriguez scored Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004) for $1. Quentin Tarantino said he would repay him by directing a segment of this movie for $1. Tarantino, a vocal proponent of film-over-digital, has said that he was curious to get hands-on experience with the HD cameras which Rodriguez lauds. When asked about his experience, Tarantino merely replied, "Mission Accomplished."

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 13 March 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

that casting is fantastic!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 13 March 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

IMDB message boards are amusing:

Subject: my rating prediction.
My prediction is rated R for strong graphic violence/disturbing images, language, and sexuality.

Re: my rating prediction.
What is this? Why does everyone care why it is rated R? Where is all of this coming from? I'm not attacking I'm just curious.

Re: my rating prediction.
Dude, the rating is as already out. You suck at life.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Sunday, 13 March 2005 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks good. Opps I started a thread about this on ILE. Sorry! I shoulda looked here first. I've not read the comics. Brittany, and Jessica. Oh me, oh my.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I would rather Sim City: The Movie.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also according to IMDB: Rodriguez's resignation from the DGA meant he gave up the director's chair on the Jon Carter of Mars movie! Which is, um, bad? Maybe?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And a lot of other potential stuff, too, yeah -- I don't know if there are as many studios required to hire exclusively DGA as there are required to stick to the WGA, but I doubt the number is small. I don't think he made enough of a fuss to stir any kind of suggestion of changing the rules.

(Imagine if Sin City had been at Paramount: sure, Rodriguez could have resigned from the DGA, but Paramount would have been required to then hire a replacement director.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought blokey who made Sky Captain was making Princess OF Mars now.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

He probably is now - I guess RR was the original choice, tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it'll probably go through a few more before it actually gets made -- someone's bound to point out to Sky Commodore that following up a kitschy space pulp move with a kitschy space pulp movie is not such a hot move. They just needed a director attached to the project to keep the money from panicking.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear Uwe Boll's available.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Energized by the audience reaction to his innovative "blend video game cut scenes into a movie based on a video game" technique in House of the Dead, in Princess of Mars Uwe Boll took the ground-breaking approach of actually filming pages from the book in lieu of several scenes. "It's a brilliant move, genius work, fucking fantastic," says NYU film professor Edvard Lalouche. "It challenges the audience's notions of text and narrative in a way no science fiction movie ever has. I hear he's doing Demolished Man next, I'm hoping he films the telepathic cocktail party scene the same way." Adds Harry Knowles, "Books are great!"

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"It challenges the audience's notions of text and narrative in a way no science fiction movie ever has."

Oh shut up.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't tell Edvard to shut up!

two weeks pass...
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/01/review.sin.city/index.html

The meticulous faithfulness to Miller's work is the film's greatest strength and its biggest weakness. As with many dark, graphic novels of this type, his stories are more focused on the visual than driven by the plot.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am amused that all of the hype surrounding this movie is trying to pretend that "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow" never existed.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

As with many dark, graphic novels of this type, his stories are more focused on the visual than driven by the plot.

READ MORE THAN ONE GRAPHIC NOVEL

"of this type" - sheesh, why not just DRESS like John Houseman when you're doing your Paper Chase riff?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

more focused on the visual than driven by the plot. Hence, um, Graphic???

Huk-L, Friday, 1 April 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM SO EXCITED!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

My local comic shop was giving out tickets to a Wednesday preview on Wednesday, but I couldn't take one because I had to do my radio show. It would have been rad to go to a sexy movie with a dozen comic nerds.

Huk-L, Friday, 1 April 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going with a bunch of nerdy physics guys. I will be the only girl and have to handle them drooling over nekkid Alba, Dawson, etc.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"handle" fnar

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you a physicist, Jocelyn? If so, you would not be the only physicist named Jocelyn that I know.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

no naked alba or dawson!

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoyed myself, laffed hard at several points. it's not great but it is funnier than the comics, it seems to acknowledge somewhat how ridiculous it is though that may not be deliberate. i don't really recall that in the comic. several moments of not great acting. somehow not quite stylized enough for me really. the casual misogyny's still a problem but nothing new. i liked frodo in it. my fave scene involved benicio del toro chewing his hand off his severed hand in order to retrieve his gun. my fave line involved 'pez dispenser'. can't remember whether either of these were in the comic, in any case it's good to actually see/hear it.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am amused that all of the hype surrounding this movie is trying to pretend that "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow" never existed.

i know! but i am amused that all of the hype surrounding sky captain was trying to pretend that attack of the clones never existed!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

sw 2 was called attack of the clones, right? i kinda still can't believe that

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Two Words: ELIJAH WOOD. Creepy.
The segment with Benicio Del Toro and Clive Owen was my favorite, probably because I think it had the best moments (the entire sequence with the hand was great), and it wasn't overpowered by the gruesome amounts of violence like the Marv segment. I think it's the most violent movie I have ever seen in my life.
X-post (no, I am not in physics, unfortunately. Too much theoretical math for me)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it -- I thought it was fun if a little slight. Usually I'm very squeamish about violence in movies but all of the gore in this didn't really bother me, it was too cartoonish for me to take seriously.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jocelyn, did you see "Kill Bill"? That was an order of magnitude more graphic in terms of violence, so after seeing that I kind of can't take movie violence very seriously. (My wife saw "Passion of the Christ" and said that movie was an order of magnitude worse than "Kill Bill" in terms of gratuitously awful violence.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt (as in viscerally) that Sin City was more violent than Kill Bill. Obviously the violence in both cases is highly stylized, but for some reason it seems MORE cartoonish/less real in the Kill Bill movies (except for Buck scene). Perhaps because there are swords involved?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I also thought it was much more violent than Kill Bill (Which I love, FWIW) because it seemed less stylized than KB and more brutal and gory. I have also seen all of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies which are famously violent, and Sin City topped these too. Jordan may be onto something with the swords. I also have real problems with male violence towards women, so that might have pushed it for me too. I refused to watch The Passion of the Christ because I thought it was counter to what Christianity should be. Although I also agree with Nicole that it became cartoonish after a while, plus one of the guys I went with knew I was uncomfortable so he kept making me laugh, and I think that took the edge off.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The movie kept switching back and forth between looking like a paintball tournament gone wrong and wildly goofy (Benicio Del Toro got his hand cut off by a swastika! AWESOM-O).

The movie was dripping with misogyny; I blame Miller for that.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

so far folks have pulled off arguing about it for a good 200 posts on one thread alone.

with luck, momus will show up in his Romulan Battlecruiser with phasers set on "Provocative", and one of my threads will finally break 1000 posts(not counting the video game threads).

kingfish van pickles (Kingfish), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

But has momus seen it yet? I don't think it opens in Europe until May/June? (Not that it might stop him, but...)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

But has momus seen it yet?

Hahaha did you ever read the "Kill Bill" thread?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus. What a stinker. Stylistically, it was moody and I liked it but the violence... Ugh, that's one of the reasons I stopped reading Preacher. The part where Hartigan is beating up Roark Jr. was- Let's just say I had to projectile vomit into my empty popcorn container.

And just after this scene, a family with two small children got up and walked out of the theater. What the fuck? Why wait until 5 minutes before the movie ends to walk out? You could probably tell 15 minutes into the movie that small, impressionable minds are going to be forever scarred by the experience. I'm sure those kids are going to grow up to be killers now...

Elijah Wood was pretty cool but I think my favorite was Brittany Murphy. In my opinion, no one can play a better strung-out, skanky, stupid skank. I LOVE IT!

And Alexis Bledel was a let down. It was just Rory Gilmore in tight clothes. I was honesly hoping for her to play a role more like Brittany's. I guess you can't fake skank.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I saw it Friday.
I thought it was great, especially the bad acting from Willis (his voice-overs felt like he was reading from the script/comic for the first time).

That's so loony about the family leaving. I wonder if it was the same family who walked out of Jackass when I saw it. They left during the "hot wheels" scene, which is one of the last bits of the movie. And I wanted to jump up and yell at them, "You draw the line HERE?"
But I didn't want to call attention to the fact that I, too, was at the movie.

Mickey Rourke, though, damn. And $py K!ds mom naked! Oh lord, how I've waited for that...and it was worth it.

Huk-L, Monday, 18 April 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

There were TWO families with kids younger than 3 in the showing we went to; one got kicked out during the Hartigan scene on the dock becaue the kid was screaming with fear.

I have to wonder how fucking stupid some people actually are to bring young children to R-rated movies. I mean, watch them at home so I don't have to deal with the fallout of your child screaming bloody murder because David Addison just got shot in the chest seven times.

And $py K!ds mom naked!

I KNOW.

Organized Crime (Leee), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I loved loved loved it, although not as much as I loved reading ILX get steamed up over a blindingly obvious point -- i.e. it's TRASHY PULP, GET OVER IT, END OF STORY -- and I speak as no particular fan of Miller and/or gratuitously violent movies (which I don't think this was -- anyone seen Very Bad Things? -- now that's gratuitous.)

If I had a criticism, it's that Mickey Rourke was so good, the movie kinda peaked too soon ("Is that the best you can do, ya pansies?" -- best moment ever.)

Love to see Rodriguez do TDKR...

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Saturday, 23 April 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

That's a good point. It's an E-ticket ride the first time, but I've never enjoyed riding the same roller coaster over and over. I might buy the DVD, but only if there are lots of extras and commentary.
