John Cleese is writing a comic: A reimagining of Superman, had the man of steel landed in Britian instead of America...

Check it.

Uh, I meant "Britain"

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I do believe the John Byrne art attached to this project would suck any possible enjoyment this book could possibly engender. And, if I may be so forthright, the notion of John Cleese co-writing an Elseworlds tale of Superman does not appeal to me in the slightest. Hwever, I shall abstain from further commentary to allow Los Bros Britiannia an opportunity to say their piece aboutt this k-rub concept.

On the other hand, this would have been great twenty years ago when a) John Byrne's art was better and b) it would have cost a dollar instead of $24.95.

(Variants of that apply to so many novelty projects these days. When they were $1, or even $3, I weighed "hmmm, it's Captain America in space, is it?" against "or I could buy a Dr Pepper and a Heath bar." When it's $25, despite having lots more money now than then, I'm still looking at it and thinking, "Monty Krypton's Flying Circus vs. paying my phone bill.")

"I say, my name is Superman" is really making me giggle, though.

This is mostly uninteresting to me, except that I kinda like it when non-comics people write comics. Like Patton Oswalt's JLA book or Brad Meltzer's Green Arrow story.

Possible sequel to _True Brit_: _Pip Pip Mxyzptlk_

Theoretical question: do you think DC tried to secure other UK-based artists (Alan Davis, Brian Bolland, Simon Bisley) to draw this project, or do you think they went straight to Byrn3 (a CANADIAN!) for this?

PS - we shd probably consider g00gleproofing all mentions of JB, lest we attract his legion o' fans & cause a ruckus.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

By Byrth Byrn3's a Bryt (Irish, I bylieve)

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Aye!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

They should have a famous Canadian -- the singer from Loverboy? -- write an Elseworlds about what would happen if Superman had landed in Canada.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, Shania Twain!

You guys do know that Superman is Canadian, right? Joe Shuster, Toronto Daily Star, Calgary = Metropolis, etc.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

He has never said "aboot" = he is AMURIKAN you HOOSER MORANS!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Shuster wasn't really Canadian anyway. He grew up in Cleveland. But he did visit Toronto, where he asked his cousin Frank about something.

Pah - Byrne's fans can come and try their best to defend their piss-poor idol of clay.

This might end up being good, but probably not. Its proper home was back in the mid-nineties with Four Weddings And A Funeral and suchlike - back when 'Britishness' was a saleable concept in and of itself. The sad fact is that if Superman had landed in Britain he'd be exactly the same except he'd live in Guildford. So all this is going to be is a barely-amusing riff on how funny it is to be British.

HA HA HA HA! No death penalty! HA HA HA HA HAAA! Bagpuss! HA HA HA! They drink TEA! Or they used to before Starbucks arrived. HA HA HA etc etc etc for 64 pages or whatever.

Instead of a cape, Mum Kent sews the alien Kryptonian swaddling into a deerstalker cap.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as Supes wears a Beefeater hat and Clark Kent works for a trashy tabloid, I'll probably briefly consider and then decide against buying this.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Colin Kent, to you.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy Olsen and Perry White are replaced with David Beckham and T.S. Eliot (who keeps pointing out he's actually not British or alive).

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

How is Colin somehow more British than Clark?

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds a bit twee, as all true men of Englande do.
