Your Favorite Moments In Comics (bound to have spoilers)

Mighty Matt Maxwell had this on his blog, and it sounded like a good ILC topic. Mine are going to be very influenced by my age at the time -- not nostalgia so much as a greater willingness to be surprised than I have now.

And yeah, most of mine are Spider-Man moments, it seems.

Amazing Spider-Man #258, I think: Spidey finds out his snazzy black costume is an alien symbiote that's trying to control him; Reed Richards blasts it off with a sonic doohickey; Spidey goes home in an old FF costume with a paper bag on his head.

Avengers and Fantastic Four something or other -- a mysterious black pod is discovered which turns out to be the long-dead Jean Grey. (The mystery was much cooler than the opening arcs of X-Factor.)

Batman and Green Arrow vs Superman in The Dark Knight Returns.

Swamp Thing discovers he's the founder of the Parliament of Trees.

John Constantine turns 40 in Hellblazer.

Thor, Thunder-Frog!

Barry Ween rescues Jeremy from the U.S. gov't.

Peter tells MJ he's Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man something or other.

Flash Thompson tells Peter Parker that they're not friends, they're just adults (Peter had been acting like they were buddies just because Flash wasn't picking on him anymore). I have no idea what issue of what title this was.

The final wink in Seaguy.

Bruce gets sad looking at the Green Man in Batman: Holy Terror.

(Despite having a Bratpack tattoo, I can't think of a specific moment from that series that would really be my favorite moment.)

Mighty Matt Maxwell caught the meme from other bloggers (and it apparently started on TCJs boards.)

Here's mine, or at least the ones I thought of last night at around nine pm.

Micronauts #29: wherein the titular characters are shot into the mind of their leader. Bicameral mayhem ensues.

New Gods #6: The Glory Boat revealed. Awe-inspiring.

Seaguy #1: The battle with the Anti-Dad. One last moment of epic heroism and battle in a world gone generic.

New X-Men #something or other. Jean Grey disassembles Cassandra Nova with a simple observation.

Daredevil #something or other. Frank Miller writes the Avengers better than anyone else.

Watchmen #5. Alan Moore writes a symmetrical comic and it just dawns on me.

Fantastic Four #sometime in Byrne's run. Black Bolt lifts the city of the Inhumans to the moon with a syllable.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I meant to add a link to the word "this," to the specific entry, so it'd be more clear it was a general meme. It's a groggy Monday morning.

That Black Bolt moment is one reason why I can't dismiss Byrne's writing en toto.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...

The rumble of the century! Batman vs the One! True! Green! Lantern! Guy Gardner a knock-em-down, drag-em-out battle of epic pro--one punch? ONE PUNCH! (justice league #5)

The Martian Manhunter watches cartoons and Batman makes children cry (DC: The New Frontier #2).

Green Arrow watches helplessly as his Arrow Car is auctioned off (World's Finest #254, and again in Green Arrow [current series] #31)

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

A few off the top of my head:

Church & State Vol 2: 'Accelerating smoothly, the Black Tower begins to revolve.' Also the page where we see Cirin for the first time.

Tintin in Tibet: Haddock tries to sacrifice himself by cutting the rope by which he is anchored to Tintin. Quite deeply moving. Apparently this is an anology for Herge's marriage.

Some John Byrne FF annual: In the first half, the FF are normal folk living in a small town. There is a magnificent double-page reveal of an enormous Doctor Doom looming over the town.

The Invisibles vol 1: Jack Frost faces the Archon.

Swamp Thing: At the conclusion of the Swamp Thing's funeral the 'camera' pans into deep space to reveal Alec standing on a distant planet, composed of weird alien vegatation.

The Dead Man: The Dead Man is... Judge Dredd. Practically made me hyperventalate when I was 11.

There may be more to come!

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

What is mighty Matt Maxwell's mightyblog again? We should link it on the Wedge.

Some 2000AD favourites (cos that was my first comics love)

- "This cursed earth will not break me...I am the law...I am...JUDGE DREDD", totally iconic Mike McMahon cover with JD half-dead and crawling towards Mega-City Two, I can't even remember if it exactly happened that way in the story but it summed up the whole epic so well, when I actually got to read it I was so excited (and it pretty much lived up to it).

- Zenith answers doorbell. Outside stands a huge robot with a smiley face painted on it. "Acid Archie the Anarchist Angel! Speed Speed Ecstasy!". This in a 'kids comic'. In 1989. Halfway through the Acid House panic. (see also: "Kylie is Vera Lynn for third world war!")

- Mad Tommy stops talking funny in Bad Company.

- Charlie rises from the sea to stop the Terra-Meks in Ro-Busters

- The fate of Steelhorn. "Scream, robot, scream! Your life will be one long scream now you have become...THE MESS!". See also "He wanted to be a fireman...now he is the fire!"

- And one last Pat Mills gem, Mek-Quake vs Torque-Armada!

- "Guh-guh-goodness no. Moab's Warzone One."

- Skizz: Cornelius has his pride.

Wooden SO OTM with the Swamp Thing (and indeed Cerebus) moments!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I love Pat Mills' hyperactive use of ellipses and bold type.

xpost

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Tom.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Two absolutely filthy moments from the League of Extrodinay Gentlemen:

Vol 1: The Invisible Man loose in a girl's bording school.
Vol 2: Mr. Hyde buggers the Invisible Man to death.

I honestly don't know how they got away without a 'mature readers' label.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's nothing to see!

I'll have to fully come up with my list later. It may require a post each for Morrison and non-Morrison :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt Maxwell's mightyblog = http://highway62.blogspot.com. You might also want to post a BW link to the Comic Weblog Updates page, even if they won't add me to their blogroll (sniffle).

Wooden, that FF scene you described (a killer scene!) was from the TRIPLE-SIZED FF #236.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Mighty Matt Maxwellblog:

http://highway62.blogspot.com

Mr. Hyde's death nearly made me break down. I was stunned at how easily Mr. Moore turned him into a fleshed-out, utterly three dimensional and empathetic character, despite his obvious flaws (his antisocial attitude being primary among them.)

Wasn't that FF the 20th anniversary issue?

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

X-POST OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

From a re-reading of JLA:

- Batman beats the Martians
- the ENTIRITY of Issue #12
- "Professor Stephen Hawking!"
- the Armies Of Man in the last issue

Those were great times - a pity the pendulum swung back to yawny soap-opera nonsense...

Vic Fluro, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh I still can't quite remember the quote that I was going to stick in my post, but I'll have to attempt it or go mad. It's the bit in The Anatomy Lesson after the big reveal: "He'll probably run back to his office, to take stock of the situation and decide what to do. It's what any man would do. And a big mess of rotting weeds that thought it was a man? It would probably do exactly the same thing."

XPost: Stephen Hawking would definitely be on my list. Now off and finish the Top Comics of 2003 and stop stealing my ideas.

Is issue 12 Tomorrow Woman?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey, Tomorrow Woman was #5, they really did crack through them.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

God I hope not.

It's Wonderworld isn't it?

(xpost)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. But I'd actually pick the one after it.. no, I have to stop now or I'll never get out of here.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"No! Let me die before the GIANT SCORPIONS get me!" (from Flesh Book 2. the official greatest ever 2000AD cover)

er, that is a list of one, I know.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Twattish pedantry alert: Isn't it 'Let me drown?'

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be wrong, come to think of it.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

-- V for Vendetta, when Evey's incarcerator is revelealed to be... V.
-- DR & Quinch kill Barry Norman (or was it Clive James?)
-- Despero kills a bunch of old characters in JLI (issue 38-ish)
-- Wolff kills himself in Explorers on the Moon

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh: Letterman knocks out the bad guy (somebody ... Stankowicz? the guy who kept trying to take down the Avengers) with his giant doorknob, in the Avengers issue of Assistant Editor Month.

And the silent issue of G.I. Joe!

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not wrong. It's 'let me drown' - and that isn't pedantry, you're speaking of a sacred artifact.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*Hellboy punches out baddie
*In Blade of the Immortal, when Shira returns in #70-something and reveals that ***SPOILER*** he's sharpened the bones sticking out of his forearm into a weapon ***SPOILER ENDS*** and the rest of the arc (3-4 issues?) is one long fight.
*Guy Smith at the end of the second to last issue of X-Force when he puts the gun to his head after Edie dies.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You realise that cover isn't in the top 20?

Vic Fluro, Monday, 20 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the top twenty's a bit shit actually. Love the Ezquerra one with Dredd and Alpha, though.

IMPORTANT NEWS FOR ALL READERS INSIDE!!!!

This one has it all!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What is that ywllow thing on his arm? Please tell me it's not some sort of furry sidekick.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the mangled remains of his eagle shoulder pad. Dredd does actually have a furry sidekick in 'The Cursed Earth', though.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

From childhood, Transformers UK:

#88: Impactor takes the bullet meant for Xaaron. I was almost crying. "You always were…a wily old buzzard"

#113: Death's Head makes his first appearance and disintegrates Bumblebee. Good form.

#186: Metroplex!

#204: Time is collapsing, the Earths of 2009 and 1989 are dying, the Autobots and Decepticons of both eras have been defeated by a Galvatron who's missing half his face. In the final page, Optimus Prime jumps out of limbo, and the next seven days were some of the longest of my life.

The "forget Baden-Powell" sequence in The Invisibles.

The Devil's Pants in Black Panther

All of the Spider-Man/Iron Man of 2020 story, but specifically the parts where he walks out of his apartment in costume, and that ending with Arno Stark kneeling in a crater that was once LA. (If nothing else, the ending gives away that it's Priest hiding behind the pen-name)
