Manitoban cartoonists to resurrect classic comic book Captain Canuck

WINNIPEG (CP) — Evildoers beware. Captain Canuck is back in action.
A pair of brothers from Brandon, Man., have resurrected the all-Canadian superhero with a new three-issue series of the classic comic book.
The first issue of Captain Canuck: Unholy War hits stores at the end of this month, 24 years after the original comic’s run ended.
“That was one of the first comic books that I was given when I was a kid,” said Riel Langlois, who wrote the new series. “I guess being in Canada you always want there to be a Canadian superhero.”
The original series was started in 1975 by Richard Comely, who grew up on a farm near Portage la Prairie. The first issue — in which Captain Canuck gets his super powers — was published out of Comely’s office in St. James.
“It did very well at the beginning. It seemed to catch everybody’s imagination,” said Comely, who now lives in Cambridge, Ont.
Comely published two more issues out of Winnipeg before moving the operation to Alberta, where it ran for 12 more issues, up until 1980.
He put out another four issues of the comic, called Captain Canuck Reborn, from 1993 to 1996.
The hero has never lost his allure, says Comely.
“I still appear every year at a big comic book expo in Toronto,” he said.
In 1995, Canada Post issued a Captain Canuck stamp. Posters, T-shirts, pens, mouse pads, postcards and other merchandise have made their way around hobby stores for years.
Langlois and his brother, Drue, who drew and inked the new issues, contacted Comely about two years ago to ask whether they could resurrect the hero.
“I’ve been interested in getting into the comic book industry for quite a while,” said Langlois, a substitute teacher who had never written a comic before.
“I figured I’d either make up something completely new or I’ll take something old and make it new again.”
Langlois sent Comely a package with scripts and characters, and he liked it.
He recruited some Winnipeg colourists, including Greg Waller and Laurie E. Smith, to fill in his brother’s drawings, and is publishing the comic himself under the name Comely Comix.
“I loved Captain Canuck, I was totally jazzed to work on it,” said Waller.
Langlois has secured Diamond Distributors to distribute the comic to roughly 3,000 stores in Canada, the United States and Europe.
“You’ll get a few people who the patriotism will appeal to them,” said James Cassels, manager of Comic Cave in Winnipeg, who ordered a few copies of the first issue for his store.
“If everybody orders a few, I’ll be happy,” said Langlois.
Issues two and three hit stores at the end of October and November.

The Captain looks much better than I imagined!

Is Guardian's costume in Alpha Flight meant to resemble Captain Canuck's, or the other way around?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think CC came before Guardian / Vindicator.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I figured, but I don't know, maybe that's Jonn Byrne he's beating up!

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Byrne wishes he looked like that.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That looks more like a Romita. Maybe John John.

Comely Comix. Surely there are 100,000 better names to call your comic book character. Not only that, but whinging about not having Canadian heroes when Wolverine is Canadian (or is he anymore, i guess not) seems a bit churlish.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure Wolverine is officially from Wuthering Heights now, if I remember Origin correctly. But they've still got Puck! He's even smaller and just as hairy!

We also have a vehement, but flawed, claim on Superman.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, even Captain America is more Canadian than Superman.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

DC has never had any use for Canada (except the last issue of the Outsiders).

Wait until the Identity Crisis killer is revealed to be ... DAVE FOLEY!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

See, if I were a supervillain, that's totally where I'd go. I'll bet Toronto is actually completely run by supervillains who make fun of the Toyman and Captain Cold and the Grinch and whatnot for bothering with the cities with superheroes in em.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What threat could Captain Cold possibly pose to Canadians?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh geez, Cap'n Cold's back, inna-he, b'y? Guess we'll have to put on the longjohns, eh?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, he could do some damage to hot coffee.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A frozen pig provides no bacon.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

In which case, we'll call on on our one true Canadian superhero, Tim Horton!

Would the Human Torch be treated as a god up north?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

We have block heaters, you know.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

FALSE IDOLS!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What would be cool would be if, like spinach gave Popeye strength, Captain Canuck pounds a litre of maple syrup and goes into a sugar rage to beat all this foes.
