Did US comics ever 'do' free gifts?

Do impermanent tattoos count?

An issue of Fantastic Four in the early seventies contained a free poster. I can't remember the issue number, but it guest-starred the Black Panther and was set in the Rhodesia-like African country Rudyarda.

More recently, comic books have had stuff stapled into the middle or polybagged with them, but they're usually advertising tat (there was something recently for this new Sky Captain movie) or poxy little 'collectable' trading cards.

I found my Space Spinner recently. UTTER RUBBISH.

B-b-but the historical value!

S: The flashy badge I have somewhere proclaiming me a TIME COMMANDER. Thank you Starlord! Unfortunately I never found anywhere worth sticking it on my jacket for but hopefully sooner or later the chance will come.

D: Recently 2000AD had a free poster prog featuring Judge Dredd versus Funeral For A Friend. FFAF won the battle.

When I started this thread I was optimistic that I would soon remember loads of excellent free gifts that comics gave away in my youth and that they wouldn't all be crap. My memory has got back to me and reported that this hope was false.

The best free gift I've seen recently was a great black and white purse Smash Hits gave away a few years ago, it had words like "HIP HOP", "POP" and "GARAGE" on it in funky lettering. My wife used it for about 3 years until our car got broken into last month and some fucker stole it.

Actually the best free gift is the wind-up toy of Charlie Busted.

But this is not comics related sadly.

I agree that it is hard to accessorise free comics badges well.

Subconsciously I think this thread was prompted by my re-reading (LAME CONFESSION ALERT) Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars last night!

Best = No-Prize (technically free, though you had some work to win one).

Can't think of any U.S. freebies, aside from the (truly) "poxy little 'collectable' trading cards".

Pogs!

The only free thing I've gotten is a "Sky Captain" cd w/my most recent Books of Magick issue. Haven't even looked at it yet; am currently using it as a bookmark. Total crap, I'd totally take some ghetto fake tattoo over that...

Wouldn't it have been cool if each issue of Seaguy had come with a figurine. Would've made my day, certainly.
