What's Michael?

"What's Michael" is about a cat named Michael. I got a thin trade in the mail yesterday (vol. 9, The Ideal Cat) and read it all in one sitting. It was so, so, so, so, so, so funny. Well, funny if you're a cat person, I guess. It's written by Makoto Kobayashi and the pictures are hilarious and the stories are cute. It's called "Japan's Garfield/Heithcliff" but it's way more interesting and smarter. I've ordered all the other "What's Michael" that Amazon has to offer... Just wanted to let you guys know.

I like cats. In fact, I didn't turn over last night because there was one on my ankle.

Super Manga Blast has also being serialising this series for the last few years as well.. my favourite stories are along the "Catzilla" or ~"O - The Yakuza who loves cats"... themes (although the imagnary cat office is pretty good as well)

Great series: definitely NOT the garfield of japan... much too quirky. Pity the books are such a rip-off!

I liked all the kitty drawings in Carnet de Voyage, which I read last night with my ailing 17-year-old Gwen curled up next to me. "Where's Michael" sounds good to me.

What I read of this in Super Manga Blast (which is nearly always worth the price, incidentally) was really good -- I didn't realize there were collections out.

Yes. Yes, yes. You must all buy "What's Michael" because it's so funny.

I was even thinking about getting some "Super Manga Blast" because it occationally has a "What's Michael" story (or two) in it, but I figure that those stories are probably collected in the trades.

I have the first two or three volumes from many years back - it's wonderful, yes. I should seek out the others.

This is also a really good example of manga that's nothing like the stereotypical swords-and-skirts-and-robots stuff. I should've thought to mention it on the manga thread back whenever.

Anyone reading Super Manga Blast lately? What have they been running? I'm thinking of putting it back on my pull list -- I haven't picked it up since moving here, cause the store in Bloomington shelves manga separately from American/Euro comics, so it's never in my line of sight.

From what I've read online about Super Manga Blast, it up to #44 (or something) and there are ongoing stories in it. And that kind of dissuaded me because I don't want to jump into a story right in the middle...

Everything in SMB has been collected into trade paperback so far.. one of the reasons i stopped buying it was because I ended up doubling up when the trades came out... As for the other stories in it: Seraphic Feather and Shadow Star are both pretty good and quite odd... 3x3 Eyes i can take or leave (its far too sprawling and repetitive), and Oh! My Goddess stands out from the 'boy in house full of beautiful fanatsy women' genre, due to the beautiful art and whimsical storylines..

Michael is still the best thing in it though..

Ha ha, I got 4 vols. in the mail yesterday: Fat Cat in the City, A Hard Day's Life, Michael's Favorite Spot and Show Time. Read them right away and loved them all. Some of the stories seem out of order and everyone seems to own Michael, but this just means you can enjoy any volume without having to stess about continuity.\

Kobayashi is really funny. Highly recommended.

I checked for this at the comic shop and at Borders this week, no dice. Time to bite the Amazon bullet, I guess!
