I Love Comics as substitute for comics

hey everyone,

i've just discovered this forum (actually i knew it was here but i've finally checked it out), and it's great! i love comics but can't really afford to buy them regularly so i get a sorta substitute fix from reading this forum. anyone else in the same boat as me?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

We can gmail you stuff! Some stuff, anyway. I'm not sure it would actually serve a fix.

Anyway, I've been in that boat -- sub Usenet for ILC -- but not lately. I guess I keep up with the main superhero stuff mostly by reading about it here, though.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it's almost like video games: sometimes watching your friends play them is as satisfying as playing them yourself! thus reading people describe comic books is almost as fun as actually reading them, to me at least!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Just steal food from your job and send it to Tep in return for comics.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

slocki HEED MY WARNING, I used ILC as a substitute for C and all that has happened is that I have started downloading a load of shite C.

(and some good ones)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! actually i don't know if i'll end up downloading stuff, i don't really enjoy reading comics on my computer (esp on my small 12-inch laptop screen!) reading about them on ilc is probably as good as really reading them off my computer.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, yeah, sort of. I haven't had time to go to the comic book shop for at least three weeks now, and at first I felt like I was running out of comics to discuss on ILC, but now it's more like I'm reading ILC instead of comics.

(rest assured though, I'm going to go tomorrow and get a giant pile up catch-ups)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jocelyn is on to something here. Comics for truffles!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i can send you fleur-de-sel caramel!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

!!

Oh man, that reminds me, I was reading about these chocolate-covered blueberries these monks in Quebec (? I think) make. You can't get em mail order cause they'd melt or spoil or whatever, but a lot of restaurants buy them from the monastery. They're not individually chocolate-covered, they're like bars of chocolate poured over handfuls of wild blueberries.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

... um, and the monks were from K'UN-L'UN, and Iron Fist had to rescue them from the Sorcerer Supreme of the Microverse!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy God

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate you now Jordan.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in a similar position to slocki. The only monthly book I'm buying at the moment is Promethea and that ends in a month. That's why my favourite threads are the ones that talk about minutiae of the Marvel Universe in absurd detail. Although anything beyond about '91 and you've lost me.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If you touch the screen, you can almost taste them.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

tep, there's a gourmet chocolatier across the street from (i think i've mentioned it to you before) that makes delicious hand-picked blueberries covered in dark chocolate (well, they don't MAKE the blueberries, but you get the idea). they're seasonal and AMAZING.

oh, and they caused the crisis on infinite earths.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I really want something with blueberries and chocolate now. I'm making dinner for friends tomorrow, so I guess that's dessert figured out.

Dessert and UNSTABLE MOLECULES.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(Off-topic: SEEK OUT THE UNSTABLE MOLECULES MINI-SERIES BY JAMES STRUM & GUY DAVIS)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i'm aslo really tempted to get comics online nbow except i can't use p2p at work to get .crb files and don't know where lese they are. the gmail things sounds cool if it is made to work.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Tep come up to WL for food sometime!! We have a new gourmet Turkish restaurant that uh, the X-men would love (I'm trying to stay on track)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am getting NO WORK done today!

I really, really want to go back to Lafayette before long. We've been meaning to get together with a friend of ours from Cincinnati who used to go, too (to visit mutual friend who has since moved to Niagara), maybe we should turn that into a Lafayette trip.

Gourmet Turkish! Jesus. We have a Turkish place here, but they only have like four things on the menu (all good, but still only four things). Okay, that's a must-do. That and Chef Tony's sushi.

(Zap pow bingo!)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They are hiring at Kokoro! I am wondering if I should apply for a watiress evening position, but I don't speak Japanese. Um, Ken Watanabe is Japanese, and he is playing Ras Al'Ghul.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Kokoro, I always forget the actual name of it. Apply! Apply! You've got nothing to lose! You could conceivably get free food!

... food such as what Wally West needs to consume in mass quantities to fuel his superpowered metabolism.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think if I could have one superpower, it would be a superpowered metabolism. I don't really care about the Speed Force or anything, I just want to be able to eat a lot.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

LOOK OVER THERE, IT'S SUPERMAN!

(Slocki! Have you heard about/seen the new Godiva truffles? Mojito and Horchata!!)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What?! I love both of those as drinks, can their essence possibly be distilled into truffle form?

You know, like Truffleman, sometime member of the JLA who could turn his foes into harmless but tasty truffles?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know! That was my reaction. Especially the mojito -- horchata seems more clearly chocolate-friendly. There's a danger with some truffles, I think, when you get to the point where the chocolate is incidental. But that isn't the case with their key lime truffles, which I love, so who knows.

My nearest Godiva's is in Indianapolis, though, which was once visited by the Great Lakes Avengers.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there are Godiva's in malls both here and in Milwaukee.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

There is also a store here that sells about 10 kinds of Baklava. Baklava, kind of like Balaclava, which I am sure John Constatine wore at some point or another.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

* Mojito: This refreshing cocktail from Cuba evokes sultry images of Havana hipsters circa 1920, and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity at trendy nightclubs in Europe and America. Chef Klocko's
interpretation includes a fusion of aromatic spearmint spiked with
hints of lime and rum, within a creamy white chocolate ganache. The
truffle is covered in a milk chocolate couverture and dusted with cocoa powder.

* Horchata: Another popular drink, this spicy concoction from Latin America got its name centuries ago from a king who exclaimed, "Or, xata!" (This is gold, cutie!), to the young girl who offered him a sip. Chef Klocko's recipe uses notes of the cocktail's primary ingredients -- flavored with roasted almonds, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar -- to create a pure translation from drink to truffle. The "gold" treasure is nestled inside Godiva's rich dark chocolate.

* Coconut Zest: The Thailand influences of lemongrass and coconut juices create a sensory experience to be savored. Chef Klocko accentuates the zesty lemon flavor and notes of creamy coconut with a touch of vanilla swirled into white chocolate ganache. This vibrant truffle is covered in dark chocolate and topped with coconut fines.

* Pabana: Grown in the West Indies, the egg-shaped passion fruit is an integral part of the local cuisine. For Godiva's Caribbean-inspired truffle, Chef Klocko tones down the acidity of the passion fruit juice by fusing it with a basic banana flavor mixed into milk chocolate ganache. The fragrant medley is covered in velvety dark chocolate and decorated with stringing in a yellow hue that depicts the banana.

* Kandor Delite: A bottle-shaped sweet of ganache subtly flavored with exotic herbs bred under the light of a red sun, infused with the exciting possibilities of red kryptonite honey and monkey musk.

* Karibu: African influences of sweet honeys and crunchy cashews come together in a truffle as warm and inviting as its Swahili translation, "Welcome Traveler." Chef Klocko delicately folds the tenderness of blossom honey flavor into white chocolate ganache garnished with roasted cashews for a "welcome" addition to the truffle collection.

* Caramel Solstice: A premium combination popular in Europe is orange with caramel. Chef Klocko blends soft caramel with oils of orange, and adds speckles of roasted hazelnuts for this "heavenly" piece bathed in dark chocolate.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, Milwaukee, that is, which was levelled and restored in the Crisis on Infinite Wisconins arc.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the mojito sounds toothsome, though i'm not a huge white chocolate fan

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(blueberry chocolate truffles, much like the Shi'ar enjoy.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I like halva. Remember, kids, with great halva comes great responsibilty.

MOJITOS SHOULD NOT CONTAIN WHITE CHOCOLATE WTF

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Sunday, 10 October 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what i'm saying.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 10 October 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

NOTHING SHOULD CONTAIN WHITE CHOCOLATE>

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
I've started buying comics again, even though I can't afford them.

I'm limiting myself to X-titles and Daredevil, though. And maybe Gotham Central and Spiderman. And you say Powers is good?

I wish comins weren't so good and fun and weirdly...comforting.

MVP (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread title is my situation to a tee. I did get some Grant Morrison stuff when the DC hub went live. I wonder if my local library would laugh me out the door if I asked for some graphic novels via inter-library loan. They pretty much shitcanned my request for Bob Dylan's bio.

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

THE BLUEBERRIES. I don't really buy many comics (still) because I haven't really decided what I want to devote my time to, yet. Right now ILC is talking about a lot of things (mostly Marvel) I am clueless about, but I enjoy reading about it, in a sick voyeuristic sort of way.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 17 March 2005 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, I think one of the reasons I've added a few Marvel titles to my file (She-Hulk, Daredevil, Black Panther) is to keep up with the talk. Of course, since they aren't X-Titles, I'm still S.O.L.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Maddie has the impression that ILC is DC-centric, while she's a Marvel Girl! I blame Huk!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The DC threads are largely (though often lovingly) derisive though!

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, and the Marvel ones aren't?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Jordan OTM.
I guess that's why ILC is the best comics mssge bd around, because we think we're better than everyone.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Panther is good?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

YES!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr Diva OTM.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still only reading TPB's. It'd be great to buy single issues again, but there is no space for such things, and that's probably for the best. A new She-Hulk TPB is out next month or the next!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

She-Hulk is good?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

She-Hulk is better than good.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a word for that?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

When did it start being "better than good"?

When did Black Panther start?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

SENSATIONAL!

xpost

I really, really liked all 12 issues, and it ended in a way that makes it work almost like a cable series, like Curb Yr Enthusiasm or something.

Black Panther #2 just came out yesterday. Written by Reg Hudlin of TV's Bernie Mac and the cinema's Boomerang, and wickedly pencilled by JR JR.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Huk you should read this book if you haven't already. Did you like John Fante?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Has there ever been a poll or something on ILC, abt who is Marvel and who is DC (me = Marvel)? DC stands for Dull Comix

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I am Marvel

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't choose! Don't make me! I AM DOOMED!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, this poll shall be the (I Love) COMIC(s) EVENT OF THE YEAR (by which I mean Monday)! NONE SHALL BE SPARED!!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

In theory I'm DC (=Vertigo), but basically it's whoever the british invasion is writing for (So, half-Marvel for the last few years).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Marvel as a kid, DC in my teens, and now I can't choose or dont care. It all sort of seems the same. Image ruined EVERYTHING!

I definitely come here as a substitute for reading/buying comics. I only buy Trades and sometimes the waiting gets too much, so I read the issues free in stores. I ain't proud of it.

Black Panther - can't wait for the trade, read both issues, will probably buy the trade anyway...

David N (David N.), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Marvel mostly. At one point I had it in mind to collect every Marvel comic from FF#1 until Jim Shooter became editor-in-chief, which is when Marvel's train went off the tracks for me.

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

make mine marvel!!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 March 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)
