i remember this comic where the flash was talking to a psychiatrist and it went over in detail how he died in the crisis on infinite earths and it ended with rudyard kipling's "if..."

what was this? i think it was a one-off. i loved it, he was chasing a tachyon back through time and became a bolt of lightning, the same bolt of lightning that gave him his powers! i used to really love that time-travel paradox stuff. was it a secret origins or something? help me out anybody?

i used to be so obsessed with the crisis on infinite earths! one of the reasons i loved "his dark materials" so much, surely...

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy crap! That sounds right up my alley!
Perhaps this was during Grant Morrison's brief run?

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

in retrospect it seems very grant morrison-ish!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Secret Origins! I'm 90% sure. This was my first exposure to post-Barry-dying Wally West.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

(Is this not also the story that posited that Barry, in going back in time while dying in Crisis, was the lightning bolt which "coincidentally" struck the conveniently identical chemicals to turn Wally into Kid Flash?)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(Er, in addition to being the lightning bolt that gave him his own powers, I mean.)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah! that's what i said above, though not too coherently (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(i can't remember any of the details)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember the Secret Origins (I think it was a SO Special, or possibly an annual), that was the one with John Fox, the Flash from the future? I don't remember the psychiatrist part, though I think I've seen that referenced somewhere...

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The shrink thing was the framing story, I think, for the origin stuff -- I don't remember for sure if Barry-Bolt was responsible just for Wally's powers or for both. (I think it was the shrink who commented on the remarkable coincidence of Wally and Barry getting their powers the same way, which led to the "omg Barry was the lightning bolt!" reveal -- which actually fit into Crisis very neatly.)

xpost; this was before John Fox was introduced, the old Secret Origins series that started right after Crisis, not the Secret Files and Origins specials they've done more recently

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

what's john fox's deal?

do you think they'll ever make a flash movie?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

They should bring back the entire cast of the 90s tv series. You know, those guys.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

there was a flash tv series?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

was it cancelled in a FLASH?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If I were the person in charge of deciding whether to make a Flash movie, I'd watch the progress of the FF movie very closely, cause they're both about as vulnerable to subpar special effects ruining the whole thing -- if you can do the FF convincingly, I think you can do the Flash.

But after seeing the Hulk, I'm not confident you can do either yet, without going the James Cameron route of inventing new technology etc.

John Fox is ... um, crap, he's a Flash from like the 24th century or something, but I don't remember now how he actually became the Flash. He's one of the very few who isn't related to Wally or Barry.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Flash TV series -- John Wesley Shipp (Mr Dawson's Dad) as Barry/Flash, Amanda Pays (Max Headroom) as The Scientist Chick, Mark Hammill as the Trickster (not as a regular, sadly, just ... what, once or twice?). Early 90s sometime, it must've been.

Results 1 - 10 of about 72 for "wally west" psychiatrist.

The John Fox was actually introduced while I was still reading comics, there was a Secret Origins special with an awesome Kubert cover, and John Fox was some guy in the future being attacked by some crazy lava monster or something, and travelled back in time to watch the Flashes of Three Eras do battle with this thing so that he could figure it out, and maybe something to do with travelling through the timestream, he got speed powers.
Then, much later, he showed up in the present and tried to take over Wally's life (a lot like Eobard Thawne did the Return of Barry Allen!).

I never knew John Fox had been around before Waid brought him in! Interesting.

And yeah, I think the thing with him trying to take over Wally's life was just yet another iteration of Waid's interesting but overemphasized "Wally feels insecure about the legacy and is afraid of being replaced" motif.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, Waid wrote the framing story of that special! The John (Broome, Gardner) Fox bits!

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I never got the name thing either! Geeez!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a hard time googling that, for some reason!

This is the dirty secret Barry Allen's letter (see: Dear Wally...(Flash spoilers) ) to Wally will reveal.

"Wally,

I abused my power and wrote poems about trains. Really fast. Don't repeat my mistake.

Yrs,
Barry"

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Wally,

I choo-choo-choose you to carry on the Flash legacy!

Sincerely,
Mr Barry Allen

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Dearest Wally,

I killed Iris so that I could be with my true love, a steam locomotive. Don't judge me.

Barry & Steamy

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Wally,

Am trapped in Old West. Doc Brown working on way to make train travel through time. Meanwhile, have made friends with Max Mercury.

Love,
Barry

PS Khonshu says to tell you Mockingbird killed the Phantom Rider!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

This is the thread where we remember fondly the first year of the 1980s Flash relaunch (scroll down until you see the words "sexual bum").
