IS THIS THE LEVEL TO WHICH SOCIETY HAS FALLEN when the Dandy includes a free sexual aid on it's cover?

This looks fairly rub - has anybody actually read the thing? It has 'CAN YOU HANDLE IT' all over it a la Crisis which is a bit heavy for Korky the Cat. What exactly are the kids now meant to be handling?

There is a new character called Dreadlock Holmes. I am torn between hoping he is a Rasta Detective and praying he isn't.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Evidently you cannot handle it.

Is that Dreadlock Holmes? What exactly is his shtick?

Vic Fluro, Friday, 8 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It turns out he is a Rasta Detective.

Predictable 'satirical' huffing and puffing.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The only good thing ever in the Dandy was Desperate Dawg.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Every kid knows the Beano is better. It had Calamity James.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Dreadlock Holmes actually solving murders/bank heists/the case of the missing bling or is he using his rastafarian skills on the Mystery Of Teacher's Apple Has Been Eaten By Fatty McTubbs Or Some Wank?

Vic Fluro, Friday, 8 October 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently the premise is that DH imagines mysteries everywhere.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

So he doesn't even get to solve a crap mystery? That's in keeping with the Dandy's tradition of uselessness.

Vic Fluro, Friday, 8 October 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly nothing's improved since Watford Gapp (He's the King of Rap), then.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

was there ever a time in which the Dandy was a magazine for dandies?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

On the theme of English comics, this picture is oddly tragic:

I used to read Oink. It was done by the same people who did Viz, but for kids. Lots of jokes about snot and farts - what more could a nine-year old want?

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oink(!) surely deserving of its own thread, anyone?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Buster looked fairly savage judging by that page. No wonder it tanked and the grimly boring Dandy totters on desperately trying to impress da yoof.

And what the hell happened to Buster's cap?

Vic Fluro, Saturday, 9 October 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i. why is buster pretending to be andy capp, second picture down?
ii. i think - cf this thread: inot the beano, not the dandy - that dandy wz meant somehow to be the "posh" twin of beano, just as the topper wz of the beezer (ie it has "winker watson" in it, which is a very jennings and derbyshire type school story, plus less "street" artwork)
iii. good stories in the dandy besides desperate dawg dan = spunky and his spider*, brassneck (abt a schoolkid who happened to be a robot), and the deathless BLACK BOB THE DANDY WONDER DOG** (introduced in one story as "the famous sheepdog" ("Next Week: the Secret of the shed; the queer tinker; a shock for Andrew Glenn")
iv. i also suspect dandy got its name via westerns, rather than eg beau brummell, but i have no evidence for this

*ok this is rubbish except for the title
**inspiration for one of my favourite viz stories: BLACK BAG (which is abt a black plastic binliner which solves crimes, rescues sheep etc)

("Dandy" is the name of my cat -> The title of this thread struck me as deeply unpleasant.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark - Buster is Andy Capp's son!!

(TRUE British comics continuity fact!!!!!!!)

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 10 October 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Buster Capp? Gel&Weave to thread: that's way more rap-friendly than Dreadlock Holmes!!!

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 10 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Buster Capp! He's In Yr Ass" etc
