I'm up to #3. Pressing question: DOES CHASE EVER GET A HAIRCUT? I keep thinking he's some chick.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY GEEZ!1!1!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

WHY AM I ALWAYS COO COO FOR YOUNGSTER HIDEAWAYS???

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Sunday, 10 October 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Runaways intended as an 18 issue mini??

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, AFAIK. Or at least, 'Season 1' or whatever he wants to call it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was set to be cancelled, but it was given a chance to finish stuff up tidily (possibly due to good word-of-mouth?), & it is coming back next year (in a provisionally unlimited format). I think I heard that sales on the manga-sized TPBs have been solid, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there ever a second TPB? I got the first and liked it enough to plan on buying the second, but never saw it....

David N (David N.), Monday, 1 November 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure it came out, but it's weird: Amazon has the first trade listed as available and the third trade as to-be-released, but the second one (Teenage Wasteland, I believe) is nowhere to be found.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 November 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw (and bought) the 2nd trade yesterday at my Local Comic Shop, so it does exist.....

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but the first issue of the Runaways restart is FANTASTIC. I was a little worried since the final issue of the first series was on some cornball shit, but this FUNNY, it's fast, and a great springboard.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Corny! The heck says you! (Granted, I think a good chunk of the series is corny, in the best possible way.) And, yes, the first issue of the new run is fantastic, esp. EXCELSIOR!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

The whole "let's run away AGAIN!" ending was a bit of cheese, but it's awesome in practice. Yeah, the sidekicks support group is brilliant.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Question (that probably won't be answerable): is the Power Packer in the group the one that flew around w/ a rainbow trail in her wake, or the one that shot energy balls from her torso? Or did they swap powers so that the one that USED TO do the balls now has the rainbow wake?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

She was the rainbow girl who, in the power swap, ended up with the mass powers (but I think they eventually sorted that out only at some point Alex stole all their powers and ran off to hang out with New Warriors).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

(no way! what a tool!)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

(But dude, he helped save the universe)

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

(well, geez, leave out THAT detail, why don'tcha, Dang!) (still, Alex = blonde W!l Wh3at0n = tool because I am jealous of his fancy powers / hipster doofus cache).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I thought Alex was the black kid who, um, ***spoilers deleted (but he's not around anymore)***?

And they all have their original powers back, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

No, no - Power Pack Alex, not Runaways Alex.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Haha, so there are multiple groups of Marvel teen heroes who have rainbow trails, energy ball projectiles, and power-stealing Alexes? I love it.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

I sense a rut.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

(Also can someone summarize Runaways Vol. 1 plz?)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

SPOILERS

A bunch of Cali kids (I don't know, 5-8 of 'em) have been seeing each other at least once a year since birth, when their rich parents all hang out together. There's a goth, a princess, a geek, a jock, a smart fat girl, and a kid. They see their parents playing dress-up and eviscerating a hooker, as parents are wont to do. They freak out and run away. Then they forget something, I don't know somebody's jacket or something, and go back to someone's house and find the pet velociraptor from the future that the fat girl wasn't supposed to get until she hit puberty, or something. They make the rounds and find out most of their parents all have crazy power-giving shit that they weren't supposed to know about yet.

So they go on the lam and try to avoid their parents while finding out more about the family supervillain business. Turns out the parents made a pact with giant ancient Easter Islandish aliens where they would help them eliminate ALL HUMANITY, and in exchange they would receive infinite power and immortality etc. etc. Then they had kids and decided that they would let their kids have the evil rewards instead. I think there was some guilt tripping and witholding of sex involved.

Anyway, long story short, stuff happens, one of the kids is a mole and eventually betrays the others, he dies and all the parents die and the giant aliens die and Captain America shows up, the end.

WORST SUMMARY EVAH

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Nah, 'sokay. However, you forgot about THE RETURN OF CLOAK & DAGGER!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Dan, if you have $7 kicking around, you should pick up the first collection (in its wee wittle manga book). No Cloak & Dagger in those 1st 6 issues, but good stuff nonetheless.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I got volume 3 of the first series and read the whole lot back to back - it was really funny and entertaining and yes, Cloak and Dagger rock the house. Is it just me or is blonde rainbow girl lesbionically hot for Japanese goth girl?

I will wait for the new series to come out in a trade, I think

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one who finds glimpse-into-our-future stories really annoying?

Still love this comic but the Excelsior subplot is much more intriguing than the future Gert one.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I kind of want the entire thing to be about Excelsior! I mean, Turbo, Chamber, Ricochet and Julie Power all in the same book is basically pandering directly to me.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

The cover to #3 features Excelsior! (and how could you forget about DARKHAWK!), so maybe you'll get yr wishes.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

"Welcome to Excelsior, MAGGOTT - hope you survive!"

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

#1 implies that in the future Excelsior have taken over the world (or at least killed the superheroes), so maybe you'll get yr wishes.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

I left out Darkhawk because I have absolutely no recollection of him. Who is he? Where would I have read about him before? And Tom is VERY OTM; GET MAGGOTT IN THIS BOOK STAT.

Um, how did I read this book three times and miss all implications about Excelsior's involvement in the future crisis? Where did you get that from, Jordan?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Jordan - unless you ARE Brian K. Vaughan!

Darkhawk explained hisself in the issue better than I could, in terms of his origin. In terms of his comic life, he was a start of his own Marvel series (by Danny Fingeroth & Mike Manley) that came out just before Marvel's quality control went subterranean; it lasted about 2 years - 6 months longer than Sleepwalker!! From what I've seen, there are a few folks nostalgic about the series; of course, from what I've seen, there are folks nostalgic about the Pope John Paul II one-shot, unempowered trophy wives, and newsprint. (OK, I'm the one nostalgic for the latter.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I just assumed that the "mysterious caller" offering to fund Excelsior in exchange for this and that JUST MIGHT be up to no good. I suppose he could just want someone do to his laundry, though.

(or um it could be totally unrelated to the future stuff, but WE WILL SEE, WON'T WE)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

There's a gigantic chasm of difference between "Excelsior take over the world" and "shadowy figure with a vested interest in preserving the apocalyptic future The Runaways are trying to prevent puts Excelsior in their path to deflect/hinder them".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

potato, potato

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Right now, the entire thing with the future is laid at the feet of the reticent kid from the first 2 pages; Excelsior (and the people involved in it) didn't even come up as a footnote from future-What'sherface.

I really hope that this is a double-misdirect and The Runaways are actually villains in the future.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh, if you are jonesin' for a double-misdirect, you definitely need to read the first series ASAP, Dan.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that kid!

I wish vol. 2 was out and collected already.

Has anyone else felt that after the first issue, volume 2 is of much spottier quality? Too much capricious misdirection, the reminder-dialogue to be much more blatant, the cliffhangers more frequently manipulative and less deepening of the backstory, and the art across the board worse.

By issue #12 the characters will be nothing but eye and you might as well be reading Seaguy.

i can't deal with that particular way of drawing mouths so that they look like they're extending out of the person's face!

Um. My mouth is not an "innie".

Just CBR'd the first 18 series, it's pretty classic, but did anyone else find the big reveal/you-know-who-is-the-traitor thing collosally dissapointing?

Also, is the second vol worth the effort?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

YES. Better than vol 1. Especially because there is more CLOAK action. And perhaps the coolest Avengers villain ever makes a major appearance.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

I think it's become more episodic and less serial, for some reason. Possibly because I've been reading it monthly, whereas I read vol. 1 in cbr.

Wolfcastleee (Leee), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I'll definitely give it a try. The twist at the end kind of disturbed me, though. (Not to mention the, uh, graphic end to the big bad. Seemed somewhat tonally off -- not to mention emotionally throwaway -- compared to the kiddie hijinx of the previous issues.)

This is seriously one of the best superhero-ish comics that I've ever read. And slocki's nuts, the art is fantastic, some of the best I've seen in a mainstream comic in years.

Read the first two (maybe three?) issues (and have skipped most of this thread, in order to act like I"m avoiding spoilers). Okay, fun. It's funny that I can imagine kids would love this, even though it completely set off all my kiddo alarms in terms of what I AS A KID would have liked. Like, if MY 12 YR OLD SELF had picked up #1, I would never have picked up #2, because, who cares, no explosions, no whatever, it's just the fruggin' Breakfast Club, but that's, I think, what an actual 12-yr-old (since when I was 12, I wasn't ACTUAL) would dig.
I'm chasing my own tail here.
I don't mind the art at all.

Mordy, Friday, 10 July 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

The tagline for the current storyline is "one will die, one will live again". Since BKV emphasised quite strongly that DEAD MEANS DEAD in this series, it kinda sucks they're turning to the trusted "no comic character ever stays dead" trope.

But I admit, I smiled when I saw the cover for the upcoming September issue (spoiler):
