Fancy A Pulse-Pounding Oddyssey - to a COMICS CONVENTION? I have to go to the London Comics Thing 2004 on Saturday October 23rd, situated right outside Russel Square tube, for business and drinking reasons. Any ILCers feel like joining me? Entry is £6 on the day, £10 for a superpass that will allow you to see Grant Morrison being interviewed by Johnathan Ross. There'll be other stuff as well such as the opportunity to buy my work.

Hopefully however the BAR (it being in a Holiday Inn) will be free to enter - if not, there'll be a nearby pub.

Vic Fluro, Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Vic has neglected to comment that there will be NO NEED for ILCers to go to the paid convention bit - though it would be fun.

What is on offer here is in fact an opportunity to drink BEER with Vic Fluro and SUPERSTARS OF THE COMICS WORLD*

*possibly.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice nearby pub is the haunted Lord John Russell.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having my brithday celebrations the night before so will almost certainly be in no state for the con. If people are going to be drinking in the evening, though, I might well pop by. It would be nice to meet you all.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 14 October 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The drinking in the evening bit is what I'm anticipating.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 14 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish! Let us know how the Grant Morrison and the beer turns out (luckily, even when both of those are at their worst, they're pretty damn good).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be up for a drink, Vic. It would be extra nice if I bumped into an old pal or two.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a web address with more details of this event?

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 15 October 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

www.comicfestival.co.uk I think - good luck getting it to work though!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 15 October 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, doesn't want to work it seems!

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That'll be because Kev has something to do with it...

As I understand it, neither Grant nor JR are 100% confirmed yet.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 15 October 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hugely importantly the DRINK IN THE PUB aspect is not being organised by the convention people but by a highly skilled team with years of experience in bringing internet menks together.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 15 October 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny, I wuv comics but I never go to comics cons. I always have the idea that the comics fans will scoff at me for being mainstream for liking Tom Strong. If I lived in London I'd definitely go to this, if only to meet Martin Skidmore.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 15 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If I was in London I'd love to come, since my FLASH at Bristol this year came to nowt. If Mike A & Dez get their Brighton event together next year, shall we make a concerted effort to all FAPPO at that?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 15 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, DV! I'd be keen to meet you too. I've not been to a comics convention in years, excepting the small press one, Caption, in Oxford - where I just end up sitting in the beer garden with the same people I see reasonably often in London, and not going to any panels or whatever.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

As I hinted above, JR apparently confirmed this morning he wasn't attending, and Grant boldly states "no convention appearances" on his website.

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 16 October 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember wandering around the appointed place for the FLASH at the appointed time but not having the chutzpah to walk up to random punters and ask if they were ILC...

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 17 October 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah. I must have been sitting down at the same time, wondering "Are any of these people Vic Fluro?" Sorry.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 17 October 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My own fault. However I should have picked a course and stuck with it as my weedy 'Vic Fluro' badge only served to make everyone who I actually talked to confused.

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 17 October 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

FACE PINT TRUE BELIEVERS!

I will be in the Lord John Russell pub on Saturday

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/562/Lord_John_Russell/Russell_Square

From about 6ish, ready and willing to talk of COMICS. Or other things.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 October 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd almost forgotten this. I'll be there too, illness permitting (it's been a stressful week).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 21 October 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid the stress does seem to have got to me. I won't be out tonight. Sorry, Tom and Al, and anyone else who is going.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 23 October 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was out till seven this morning and am feeling sick. Hope to meet you lot some other time. Have fun!

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well the guest of honour didn't make it either so don't feel too bad (admittedly he had a great excuse - dinner with some senior US comics editors) - but I had a good evening in the pub with Pete, Dave et al. so a good time was had by all!

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 23 October 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
I don't know where any of my US ILC 'posse' live but I will be in Seattle in April at a pop music conference (there's a thread on big scary ILE about it) so if any of you live there I'd love to say hi.
