Why would you write a comic?

As opposed to writing a genre story?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Short stories pay very little and are never contracted more than one at a time.

(That's the practical reason. The creative ones ... well, it's like why would you make a movie when you could write a book, or vice versa.)

Because comics aren't a genre, they're a medium...

The obvious answer is "why not?"

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Because then you'd lose your chances for fancy-pants prose!

Because I can call the reader a wanker and KNOW that someone (the artist) will read it & take it to heart.

Just because most writers are afraid to put prose in comics these days don't mean that it's impossible, Lee. True, you may cut your target market down to you and five other people, but don't let that stop ya.

The answer is to make your name in prose before writing any comics. You get fast-tracked into the comics biz regardless of whether you have any actual comics nous and your prose reputation is unblemished. Do it the other way around and you have to work for ages to even get a commission on Angel And The Ape and when you do write a novel you'll still be "that comics guy".

How and why the hell did Neil Gaiman do comics first?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(btw, the real answer is: for the groupies, Leee, for the groupies)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Because pictures are cooler than words.

And, if you're a hot chick writer, you will have the unyielding love of comic-book nerdy males.

Neil Gaiman = Books -> Comics -> Novels

Also he is rub so doesn't count

(except, grudgingly, 1602)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it's better than doing my homework!
